It's that time of year when I put the camera away and get the scanner back out. This winter I will be scanning some Excelsior of Bournemouth stuff from the late 1980s and early to mid 1990s. Here are some of the coaches seen at the Bournemouth depot in April 1992.

Seen in Poole in April 1989 is Excelsior of Bournemouth Volvo B10M-61 / Van Hool Alizee C46FT XEL24. This coach was new in 1987 and started life allocated to Excelsior's Munda of Ostend operation registered GPL-066. The coach arrived in the UK for the 1988 season where it gained the XEL24 mark previously carried by the Plaxton Paramount 4000 coach new in 1984. The Van Hool would depart the Excelsior fleet as E455SEL in early 1992.
Just to keep us on our toes, the XEL24 would then be carried by similar Van Hool E304OPR before moving on to a series of Plaxton coaches.

Excelsior Brigade
70th, 71st, 72nd, 73rd & 74th
New York Infantry Regiments
Five marker stones north of the main monument show the positions of each of the brigade’s regiments along the fence line to United States Avenue. In addition, one of the five regiments, the 73rd New York Infantry, has its own monument nearby.
Daniel Sickles, a controversial United States congressman and Major in the New York militia, raised this brigade of five regiments early in 1861. The regiments were raised directly under the authority of War Department and included companies from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Michigan. In December of 1861 they were redesignated as New York regiments and assigned their numbers.
Sickles commanded the brigade at Seven Pines and during the Seven Days battles. By the time of the Battle of Gettysburg he had been promoted to corps command, but the Excelsior Brigade would always be connected to its controversial commander.

The Excelsior Brigade was commanded at the Battle of Gettysburg by Colonel William R. Brewster of the 73rd New York. A whopping 250 coach movements in 5 hours (08:00-13:00) kept the camera occupied this morning (Sat 03/05/2025) with the increased traffic on the M3 at Fleet being influenced by cruise ships in Southampton, Army vs Navy rugby at Twickenham, and early May bank holiday weekend coach trips. Being fairly close to Heathrow, Windsor and Stonehenge meant some of that total were the same coaches returning but it was a good haul nonetheless.
It was back to Wembley today (26/05/2024) for the EFL Championship Play-off Final between Leeds United and Southampton. Just over 200 coaches turned up on what proved to be a largely sunny day, despite the day long forecast of showers!
Thanks go to BM for the regular updates from the North!
