Almost exactly one year ago, I was in San Jose and gave two talks at a conference and since my flight back to New York was on Sunday, I decided to visit San Francisco on Saturday which turned out to be an amazing experience and also a little bit of an adventure.
The whole journey started in my Airbnb in San Jose, where I told to my landlord about my planned trip to San Francisco and she said, that her husband comes from San Francisco and he can drive me to the train station in San Jose in the morning. I wasn’t sure if she was serious since I told her that I want to be there very early at around 4-5 am (and it was weekend), but then her husband joined the conversation and said that he gets up this early everyday for work and also on the weekends since he is so used to this rhythm that he cannot sleep any longer. Of course I was super happy since I didn’t have to take a taxi or an Uber and indeed, the next morning he got up almost the same time as I did and drove me to the train station. After buying the ticket, I enjoyed the ride with the Caltrain and around 7 a.m. I arrived at the San Francisco train station.
I actually looked up a lot of the things about the Golden Gate Bridge which I wanted to visit, but I didn’t spend time on reading about the public transport. First I was not sure, were my bus station was, and after asking a woman which turned out to be a bus driver, she told me that I should jump onto this bus standing there, but I can only pay cash and I do not get any change from the ticket machine in the bus. She was like „Hurry, otherwise you don’t catch that bus!“ and so I jumped into the bus and noticed that I only had 10, 20 or 50 dollar bills which I told the driver. He then looked angry at me and said: „Please stand back!“ Since I had no ticket and he sometimes looked back at me through the mirror, I got out of the bus at one of the next stations since I felt very uncomfortable. Funnily, another bus stopped right in front of my nose, the door opened and this woman from earlier was sitting in there and saying: „Did he threw you out of the bus?!?“ I told her that I decided to leave the bus and then she said: „Come on, jump in.“ We then started to talk, she was super kind and asked me where I’m from and what I’m doing here and after showing her that I don’t have any coins or one dollar bills, she gave me a ticket for free and even told me that this is valid for a few hours. Whilst driving through San Francisco, she then told me a lot of things like „Look, there you can see the famous Lombard Street a little!“ meaning that I got more or less a little tour during my bus ride. After a few stations, she then told me that I have to get out of the bus here and switch to another one which is already labeled with „Golden Gate Bridge“. So I got out of her bus and thanked her a few times since I was just so happy that she was so kind. Since I knew that my ticket was still valid a few hours, I decided to quickly walk back to Lombard street since I didn’t want to miss it if I’m already here on the other end of the world. After seeing this wound street and a lot of people there, I walked back to the bus station and jumped onto the bus to the Golden Gate Bridge and arrived there around 9 am.
First, I took a few images from the parking lot of the Welcome Center, had a look into the center to make up my mind which souvenirs I might buy later and then I decided to eat something such that I have enough energy to walk around and see all the viewpoints I wanted to visit. I then decided to first walk over the bridge which was pretty cool, especially when you feel this massive steel construction moving and shaking a little when cars drive by. At the other end, I walked up to the Battery Spencer viewpoint, one of the most popular viewpoints, at least judging from the crowds of people there. The view was indeed very nice, but there was no fog around the bridge or nice clouds in the air and thus it was photographically a bit boring. Nevertheless it was very nice and I then continued the road up the hill a little and after that I decided to go back down and cross the bridge again to get back to the Welcome Center.
After having some lunch and buying some souvenirs, I then decided to continue to the next „viewpoint“ called Marshall Beach. I was actually a little early for sunset, but I thought better be early than late, especially since I didn’t exactly know how to get there. It turned out that it was pretty easy to find and I went down the stairs and was at the beach around 4 p.m. Since there were a few hours left til sunset, I played around with some very long exposures which didn’t turn out very great. Since I was still pretty far away from the bridge, I noticed people climbing over some rocks at the other end of the beach and hence I did the same and got to another beach closer to the bridge, where I found this rock with all its algae on it and I thought that this might serve as a nice foreground. Since I’ve never done any seascape photography, I played around with different shutter speeds and timings and found, that I get the best results when I start exposing after a wave hits the rock and the water is flowing back into the ocean. I then took a lot of images as the sun went down and got my feet wet a few times due to some bigger waves which was totally worth it I think :) The sunset itself was not very spectacular since the sun was mostly behind the clouds, but there was some red color in the sky which I enhanced in post processing. Of all the images I took, this one turned out to be my favorite since I really like how the water winds itself around the stone in the foreground, creating this nice S-curve which leads to the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance. Hope you like it too! :)
Exactly one month before NS said goodbye to the 1130, the locomotive with IC939 Zandvoort aan Zee - Heerlen arrived at Utrecht CS. The train consists of a mix of ICR and plan W-carriages; April 23, 1993.
Not exactly the most planned photo but I had arrived back in Worcester from Loughborough just 10 minutes brfore the train was due!

The weather finally improved about 20 minutes later by which time I was heading back to Malvern. Still it was good to see a loco that I had not seen for quite a few years.
Suffering, in all it's varied forms, is what exactly?
A compounding of fractured soul, so matter-of-factly,
She said that He Himself said,
That surgery is an art gallery of faith instead
Masterpieces where health invariably decreases
Swan songs of broken hearts where love ceases
To enliven home truth's of carefree surrealism
One empty soul does not make another idealism,
Minimal is the grey day that paves the way for darkness
Looming on the horizon of unseen weathering blackness
A colossus of sky with the upper land
Nature the only card, saviour, and prophet to hand
Fear may only be a feeling, but the feeling is beyond fear itself
As they say, depression is expectant as we each try to find oneself
In the mire of news, be it the betrayal of the health of our citizens
Or just the assassination of natural resources wealth, that bloody well glistens
In the headlights and highlights of our obit we now live in memory alone
"A Song for Departure" plays upon the mind that cannot find adequate words to bemoan
The lack of attention paid to the well-being of Mother Nature, ageism spammed!
We are seeking the revolution for the revolving Earth whose door's are jammed
By the annual quagmire of festive exposure by all means time is spent!
Here by the grace of God, we breathe in life, in a place, in grace Heaven sent
It's tempting to stop reading, as it is to cease listening, turning a blind eye as well, why not?
But dare I say, it's nigh on impossible for very long to do the whole damned lot!
Mother Nature, She is suffering can't you see upon this obdurate land
We tune-in to be deceived, ghost hunters and faithful followers of a new kind of religious brand
Detect only what the illusion alludes to in the lost art of heart and soul
In part, life is already obfuscated with it's own toxins, we're the decade on parole
1988, 1998, 2008, I remember well, the future that is coming too soon
Here before tomorrow ever knows what to do with itself, we must find the answers to be in tune
Petty arguments wage wars within the minds of boys whose toys have been confiscated by ignorance
A belief of faith cannot be true if it sees red at every turn, nor can it bring hope for the children in whom we bestow what kind of continuance?
Benevolence is awaited with a youthful eagerness that has grown old waiting on the wings of fighters
Knives replace fists that substitute backs for tables in the cities full of such blighters
Intervention risks life and death for the removal of compassion brings the hooded underworld
That has now come up to grab society by the ruddy throat twirled
A society indeed, un-policed and unappeased the x-factor of fearless nerves
Can no longer meet with the supply, that which steals warns of what it serves
We're a breed apart though we never used to be and never should be
Walking tall when we should be down on our damned knees begging for forgiveness until we all finally agree
So the trepidant beggars of belief peaceably fly in the face of popular opinion,
For the standards of today will invariably fail the tests of time and ever-changing dominion
If you feel the force of scientific tribulation, will it numb the senses of tomorrow
Can the government's diet, passed fit for us all, sustain us through political sorrow?
If a smile should pass your face someday, cherish it's presence upon the lifestyle that forgot how to use it
Wear yourself well, but for the love of life we must address what does reciprocally befit.

The MV RIVERDANCE, overwhelmed by freak waves, floundered on the soft sands off Cleveleys. Nothing could be done to refloat her and she was eventually cut up on site
taken exactly seven minutes after i woke up
i have worn glasses since seventh grade
please don't laugh
additionally, i've been taking too many pictures
and i'm running out of creativity
but i hope to get you guys some better photos soon ~
One moment I'm driving home with a car full of groceries. Next minute I'm on hands and knees contemplating the slow motion turmoil unfolding in this ancestral burial ground. That's just how my life works. Spontaneity is the key. That and the ability to at least momentarily divert my attention in quest of life moments. I'm in the process of watching yet another summer fly by in a seemingly endless series of days filled with work, errands and chores. By my way of thinking, summer will forever (and soon) pass into memory no matter what I do. The only way to forestall the inevitable is attempt to inject some meaning wherever possible. For me that involves shifting life into proverbial park if even for a few minutes. It's often a matter of shifting priorities, and literally borrowing a few minutes from this or that. I find that most times I benefit more from the side trip than I do suffer from whatever delay it causes me. On this particular day a cold front had swept through overnight ushering in wonderful cloud structure the next morning. I just happened to be passing by this burial ground and simply pulled over. I've explored here many times; it's one of the oldest cemeteries in the area. Yet each time I visit I seem to discover something I hadn't noticed before. Or I see familiar things in a different light. The creative mind tends to work that way. I never feel exactly the same way when I visit, so it stands to reason I will see things differently each time. My intrigue with the sky led me to this exact place. I was trying to let the sky be defined by the shapes of the gravestones as I composed shots. That's when the weirdly parallel tilt of the stones became relevant. I'd noticed it before but it was only from this angle that it took on any real significance. Rather jarring actually. Discord among the adjacent stones that were still mostly upright. The inscriptions were too faded to read. But I couldn't help but wonder if the graves were of brothers and/or sisters...a sibling rivalry that transcends life.
I don’t exactly remember the circumstances that led to this happening, but alas, another rare daylight run of the FEC rock-runners documented for the books. Such moves are hard to plan for on a whim, let alone predict, but are massively appealing to photograph when given the opportunity. Finding FEC SD40’s in service on the mainline in daylight is difficult to accomplish. Even with the complexities of shooting unplanned train moves, Little River is one of the ‘safe’ plays for me, a location I’d fall back on for this occasion—and it certainly won’t be the last time.
Led by sister ‘40’s #FEC720 [SD40-2] and #FEC711 [SD40-2], a late-running FEC 193-08 heads south through the cluttered mess that Little River on the morning of December 8th, 2023, rounding the curve past the neighborhood’s namesake body of water towards the Little River wye. The two Champion units have 121 cars on the drawbar, 119 of them being empty limestone gondolas/hoppers, and two articulated TOFC spine cars for the railroads’ then-new Waste Management service on the bottom [said WM traffic now has its own dedicated train at the time of posting].
Typically operating under the cover of night, Train 193 handles empty limestone traffic out of Fort Pierce to Medley Monday through Friday as the southbound counterpart to Train 292, which handles the northbound loads out of Medley. Motive power for the service cycles every week, and greatly varies depending on what’s available.

October 11, 2008. Minneapolis, Minnesota. 'Shooting' on the bridge.
Willow Lake reflection abstraction. Various blue wildflowers were everywhere, and a dense carpet of green, all thanks to our record winter snowfall.
Not exactly the most effort I've ever had to put into a landscape photograph, but I was driving past as the light was beginning to break through the clouds and had to stop.
It came and went, but it was just a case of waiting and shooting a few frames to catch it as it peaked, whilst wishing I was high up on that ridge...
Lucerne's Jesuit Church is the first large baroque church built in Switzerland north of the alps. First and foremost is an expression of the Catholic Church's 17th century struggle to regain spiritual leadership in the counter-reformation. At the same time it does show that the Catholics then refused to accept any discussion on major points of criticism by the protestant churches. Instead, baroque architecture displays power and glory and emphasizes exactly those parts of Catholic tradition (especially the veneration of saints) and visual culture (as opposed to the protestant emphasis on the word of the biblical scriptures).
There is perfect logic that Lucerne, seeing itself as the capital of the Catholic fraction of Switzerland in pre-modern times, should have constructed this building. Today, Jesuit Church is a major tourist attraction and serves as a concert hall while it has become almost irrelevant to local church life from a religious point of view.

It's exactly sunset on a blustery day in Saint Paul, Minnesota. In the last light of day a BNSF Heritage One Paint CW44-9 leads a long intermodal train from Midway yard west of town down the Mississippi River at CP Hoffman. This view is courtesy of Mounds Park in east Saint Paul, and is known as "Dayton's Bluff". This evening the railroad was busy with the trains of UP, CPKC, and this final BNSF move at sunset. The solo H1 was DPU'd to another H1 about 2/3rds of the way back in the train. A great leader by BN standards against the only decent light seen all afternoon...
Thanks for looking!
Not exactly a blizzard, because of the lack of wind, I made this capture in my own backyard, shooting off my patio into the northern woodlands. What started as a light, amicable snowfall suddenly became a fierce downfall, with very low visibility as you can plainly see. I managed to grab a flurry of shots while the snow was in its heaviest phase. Ten minutes later, it was back to its relatively gentle version. This capture now ranks as one of my all-time favorite snow photos. Until the next one.
This land has now been conquered by the Viking Queen
They surrendered pretty quickly
Just a few casualties
It is called EvaVisionLand or short EvaVision
There is one rule
And that is following your intuition
Otherwise everything is allowed
Just being in the flow
Doing exactly what you want - all the time
As long as you know that you are in intuition mode
Sounds good doesn't it
EvaRomance will be the normal state of mind for everybody entering this land
Giving and receiving love and respect will be the normal way to behave
Sigh
I think I will conquer the rest of the world too
I wonder if you are ready
And I of course don't need to use force - you guys will surrender pretty easily
I just know that for sure

They all say that. What exactly they experience on the other side is different for each individual, often vastly different. Just like no two lives are the same, no two deaths and no two afterlives are. One thing they all seem to agree upon though, the other world feels more "real" for lack of a better term, than this one. And frankly, better.
Just how much does that really say though. Life to me always felt unreal, lacking intensity. Like a rock song when the drums and bass are missing. As if the outside world was behind glass. As if I were floating in a bubble, a forcefield of sorts, through which communication and connections are getting muted and inhibited, going both ways. Like being in a crowded room and nobody can hear you scream, and neither can you hear them as they talk and go about their day. But then, whenever something did manage to get through the bubble, it usually appeared hostile in nature, so I guess I shouldn't complain too much.
This is for all my friends who are having such a horrible time with the new home page. Hope this gives you a laugh! :)

Four images stitched,
Birubi Point
Anna Bay, New South Wales, Australia
Birubi Point Aboriginal Place is at the southern end of Tomaree Coastal Walk near Anna Bay.
It’s a significant place to reflect on the strong cultural connection that the Worimi People have with this land as its Traditional Custodians for tens of thousands of years. Its legal declaration as an ‘Aboriginal Place’ demonstrates its significance to the Worimi People and their culture.
Birubi means ‘Place of the Southern Cross’ and one of the special characteristics of Birubi Point is the expansive view it offers of the sea and sky, including the Southern Cross.

Taken from the, castle wall,
Vale Canada, Sines, Setúbal
King Peter I of Portugal ordered its construction in the 14th century to protect Sines from potential invasions along the southwestern coast.
Like Setúbal, but contrary to what happened in Santiago do Cacém or Palmela, the castle was constructed to defend the wealth of the local merchants, indicating a new economic and social order, with the ascension of the bourgeoisie
Not exactly sure about species here, but at least we can tell it is a female of some sort of leafcutter bee (Megachile sp.).
Megachilid bees are always cool, but as a photographer I like this shot primarily for how I managed to nail the focus on the face of the bee while it was still flying before landing on this woolly burdock (Actium tomentosum) in Åva-Stensjödal in Tyresta National Park.
Well, not exactly a tiger burning - that's cruelty in the extreme, but I'm not sure of the exact lyrics, so I'll always sing it like that.
This is exactly the same shot as the previous one but I couldn't decide whether to texturise or not.
Exactly one year ago, my lovely wife Marilyn and I were wandering the streets of Paris. Before Paris, we had spent time in Windsor and London, England. These are treasured moments for both of us because you never know what curves life will throw at you. Marilyn has lupus, an autoimmune disease, and for 30 years she has been symptom free. Lupus has reared up in her life recently, which resulted in hospitalization. She is home now receiving treatment that hopefully will push the disease back.
For the next little bit of time I will be off and on Flickr. Thank you so very much to all my Flickr friends for all your comments and favs. Looking forward to sharing and seeing everyone’s fabulous images in the days ahead. Best wishes to you all.
