This was taken exactly 4 years ago today after an ice storm. We have finally started to feel like winter this year, after one one the warmest Nov-early Jan recorded in the Baltimore area. But winter should come roaring in starting Fri night, as they are calling for a huge snowstorm to hit here this weekend!

The Lytham 1940s Wartime Weekend took place between Saturday, August 17 and Sunday, August 18, 2024.
The two day spectacle saw thousands of people re-live the 1940s wartime era with a weekend of forties singing, dancing, weapons displays, historic vehicles, military charities, vintage traders and more.
Almost exactly a year ago I had ventured off to this same location because I thought the sun was supposed to come up right behind this little island. I was ill equipped with a 18-135 lens, trying to capture this. And while it almost worked, my framing and composition weren’t great. This morning when I returned with a plan, and the right lens for the job I was between relieved and disappointed. The sun never pierced the thick layers of fog, the side light, and illuminated mist never came to pass. I would of stayed longer than I had to see if things would work out in my favor, but three hours was enough for me. Out of all the shots I snapped this morning, this ended up being my favorite of the bunch.

Not exactly a fence, but sort of. The yellow rope held the bait bucket as we fished off the pier. If you squint at it, you can also pretend it's a very skinny yellow tree boa wrapped around a branch.
Not exactly compositional perfection but I did like this candid look of one of the local coyotes in the park where I have been working part time. Some of the fall color still hanging on there in the background. My day off, I went to the park anyway with the big gear, from the rolling blind. Who does that - goes to work on their day off, just for fun? 😉
“Schau Bärbel, da sitzen wir in Motorwurm beim Brunnen, weil unsere Füße schon müde waren? ”
“Genau Luis, Sweety hatte es besser, die wurde die ganze Zeit getragen. Es heißt übrigens immer noch Motowun!”

"Look Bärbel, there we are sitting in Motorworm by the fountain, because our feet were already tired?"
"Exactly Luis, Sweety had it better, she has been carried all the time. By the way, it's still called Motowun!"
Well not exactly Kate's Bush, but it was The Wild and Windy Moor of Black Tor Falls!
Thought I would re-visit having only been there once before but alas the weather was not in my favour so a battle with the elements inevitably ended in the elements winning! ;)

Almost exactly a year ago, the date is January 17, 2020. The quaint Cascade town of Skykomish on the west slope of Washington's Stevens Pass is still without electricity nearly a week after getting cut off from the grid after a heavy winter storm that devastated the area with heavy snow and thousands of downed trees that fell on power lines, houses, & roads. The normally tranquil pre-dawn quiet of the mountain town is today filled with the labored hums and whines of an army of portable generators in varied sizes and shapes, set up around town to provide light and heat to the residents until the power lines are repaired.
The January 2020 storm had closed BNSF's route over Stevens Pass as well as State Highway 2 that parallels the rails route between Everett and Wenatchee. Between Gold Bar and Skykomish BNSF alone had over 600 downed trees to clear from their tracks with an addititional 200-300 that fell across the mainline in the roughly 10 miles section of mountain grade between Skykomish & Scenic.
After several days of around-the-clock work by BNSF maintenance forces Stevens Pass was finally re-opened on the evening of January 16 not too far behind WSDOT's reopening of Highway 2. With the tree carnage cleaned up or pushed aside enough to start running trains again, BNSF called a plow crew out of Everett for the following morning of January 17 to head up to Skykomish and work the snow dozer from there east over the hill to do some snow clearing.
Arriving at Sky about 0700am the crew got to work firing up the locomotives and clearing several feet of snow accumulation from the walkways. They then dug out the nearby switches to allow them to exit the spur track and get out onto the siding. From there they would eventually head east; more on that to follow...

Also known by the name of Dirty face, the Red-fronted parakeet (Pyrrhura frontalis)/ Tiriba (in portuguese) is a bird of the Psittacidae family that inhabits forest regions, usually in flocks. Suffers from habitat loss.
Its scientific name means: do (Greek) purrhos = with the color of the flame of fire, red; and -diamonds = with the tail; and from (Latin) frontalis, frontis = forehead, front, forehead. ⇒ (Bird with) red tail and forehead.
It measures between 24 and 28 centimeters in length and weighs between 72 and 94 grams.
It is green, even on the cheeks, with a brownish ear area. Front, abdomen and underside of the tail red. It has no apparent external differences between males and females.
It prefers small fruits, but also eats large fruits, seeds and nuts. It usually balances on branches, staying upside down while eating.
It nests in cavities in tree trunks where 3 to 5 eggs are laid, whose dimensions are around 26 x 21 millimeters and which are incubated by the female for about 30 days. When the young are born, they are fed by the parents, especially by the male, for about 45 days.
Geographic distribution
It occurs from Bahia to Rio Grande do Sul, in addition to the Atlantic Forest, Goiás and the south of Mato Grosso do Sul, Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina.
It usually moves in flocks of 10 to 40 individuals.

Almost exactly a year ago, Eric and I drove over to Yosemite after an overnight snowstorm. One of our first stops was the Wawona Tunnel overlook where we watched the sun progressively warm the face of El Capitan. The valley below stayed frozen in fresh snow much longer as the low sun tried to make it's way over the towering walls above.

Waiting to take you
Waiting to place you

I'm not sure exactly which beach this is.
I think it's Clam Beach from looking at Google Maps. We were on our way up to Trinidad and I just had to get out of the car and photograph the sky, which was quite dramatic.

We spoke to a ranger about this hike--from the Dempster Highway to Grizzly Lake, over Glissade Pass to Divide Lake, on to Talus Lake, and then back--before we started. He described the route over Glissade Pass, explaining, "You'll look down and say, 'that can't be possible,' but you just keep going." And that's exactly what we did say, and do, glissading down snowfields and scree. On the way back up the pass, by this point good and tired, we found ourselves sinking deep into the snow and scree, and experiencing the demoralization of actually sliding backwards after great effort. Since this photo is six years old, I won't try to build the suspense; after a lot of effort, we made it back to the tent:) Mrs. Orca making the arduous way from Divide to Grizzly lake over Glissade Pass, Tombstone Territorial Park, Yukon Territory, Canada.
Exactly one year ago today, local Wheeling fans were treated to both Denver & Rio Grande Western Tunnel Motors leading Brewster-Willard train 237 west on the Brewster Sub in perfect evening sun. Both units had been assigned to the train amidst unsatisfactory weather all week, but Mother Nature finally graced Northern Ohio with abundant sunshine that Saturday. Great company, an enthusiastic crew, and plenty of slow orders to make chasing a breeze resulted in one of the best days I've ever had on the Wheeling. The train is seen here working westbound approaching Orrville, Ohio, passing part of the mostly removed telegraph line. Only a few days later, the pair was split apart and both units haven't been together since. With the 5413's prime mover scheduled to be replaced, hopefully we'll see something like this again soon.
Somehow, I managed to arrive at Westward Ho! at exactly the right time. The tide was going out (I had planned that part) and thankfully most of the dog-walkers were still making their way towards the beach.
Imagine that, the gloriously soggy sands of Westward Ho! devoid of frantic paw prints, ball divots and start-stop welly-boot tracks. Not that I actually have anything against dog-walkers on beaches - it's a joy to see the excitement and the wagging tails - it's just extra-nice to find pristine sands when the weather is perfect for photography.
Epic clouds. Unending wet sands. Intermittent sunshine. Strong, but managable winds. Just what the Doctor ordered.

The George is exactly what you would expect and want from an 'Old English Inn'. First Licensed in 1397, it sits in the heart of this beautiful down land conservation.
First licensed in 1397, the foundations of this splendid flint stone and half timbered building date back to 1250, and there are a network of smuggler’s tunnels leading from its cellars.
The bar, the oldest part of the Inn, has an impressive inglenook fireplace with a huge copper hood, oak floors and Sussex hop bines decorating the walls.
MY THANKS TO ALL WHO VISIT AND COMMENT IT IS APPRECIATED

Exactly one month ago and I was thinking how Chicagoland has had quite the moderate Fall and winter up to that point. I aimed south on this trip to do something different since it seemed like snow was forecasted hardly anywhere before Christmas of 2023.
I was content with the sweater weather in Mississippi even amongst the overnight frost. It ended up being a great prop for this daybreak version of the Artesia turn.
Fast forward to January 20th of 2024 and I’m already over Winter. The past two weeks have been rough in the Midwest. While snow is a welcome sight for photography, working in it, driving in it, trying to walk the dog in it, keeping the house clean, constantly wearing multiple layers - it all gets old quite fast. The forecasted high on Monday is in the upper 30s.
I can’t wait.
Not exactly the same as, but definitely inspired by this shot by classic perfection.
Truth is it gave me the perfect excuse to don this kitty ear hat. But do I really need an excuse?
I'm driving along uninspired and without a plan but determined to blow the dust off the camera and somehow ended up inside Mount Rainier National Park, I'll pause while you pick your jaw up off the floor.....
....when out of the corner of my eye I see the wide swath of boulders that is the riverbed of the Nisqually River in the middle of which was a stand of dead trees, I brake...
I've never pulled into this pullout and don't know exactly where I am and I'm trying to compose something when I see a slight trail down into the river, I go down...
just after fording a shallow stream the clouds part and low and behold the peak of Mount Rainier stands hovering high above. Screw those trees!!
Exactly 50 years ago one of the original 'Peaks' is ready to draw forward with fully loaded HAAs before joining to the rake to the left. The shunter with his shunting pole walks towards the photographer. Happily the loco is preserved just 7 miles distant from here at the Midland Railway Centre at Swanwick Junction.

Sometimes you just do not feel like getting up in the morning. This was exactly the case here. After the middle of the night star photography session my body really, really wanted to stay in the warm sleeping bag. But then the realization came over me that this is probably the last time I will see Tien Shen mountains from such a close range. I have stumbled out of the tent. And then this happened…

This little mouse brooch is the earliest piece of jewellery I remember being given, I can't date it exactly but it's probably at least fifty years old. I never wear it now but I keep it for sentimental reasons.
The mouse measures 4 cm including its tail.
Exactly 2 years ago today, NH-1 is seen dropping cars in the Pine Orchard yard for Branford Steam Railroad, Branford, Connecticut.
Zickefoose isn't exactly a common name, unless you're from certain parts of West Virginia. It's pretty rare in Washington, but not unknown.
While I can't find a grave for him, the oldest bit of news I came across for him is from December 1954:
Tractor Victim is Recovering
"A logging accident near Cusick nearly claimed the life of Charles Zickefoose, Springdale, who is recovering satisfactorily in a Newport hospital today, after suffering a fractured pelvis and a badly lacerated right arm that required 14 stitches Saturday."
Zickefoose was loading a tractor onto the icy bed of a truck when the machine slipped off, pinning Zickefoose in a shallow ditch. His brother, Phillip, dug him out and drove him tot he hospital."
With a bit of backwards digging, I see that Phillip was born in 1937 to James and Erma. James was from Charley and Myrtle in 1911. They were all, it seems, Seventh Day Adventists.
Following the near death experience, the brothers Zickefoose, along with their father, recorded two mining claims near Colville in 1957.
While Phillip lived until 2003, I can't find anything on when (or if?) Charles died, though he is mentioned as still living in Phillip's obituary. They also apparently have/had two sisters.

♫Oh, the skies, tumbling from your eyes
So sublime, a chase to end all time
Seasons call and fall, from grace and uniform
Anatomical, metaphysical
Oh, the dye
A blood red setting sun
Rushing through my veins
Burning up my skin
I will survive, live and thrive
Win this deadly game
Love crime
Love crime
I will survive, live and thrive
I will survive

Exactly, the title is repeated. More news at 9, now. Okay, here we are again at the end of a Kazakhstan trip. I'm telling the story in reverse chronological order, and for now, only the last third of the journey. It will be a longer report. Let's see how long I can manage. I didn't have the time to write separate travel reports, even though I really appreciate that kind of sophisticated entertainment.
It was tough. My impression is that surveillance has increased somewhat, especially by local officials. Of course, the police are everywhere. Drones play a role to some extent. This made certain parts of the day difficult; some photos weren't possible. But this impression is subjective. In the end, the rule for our wonderful hobby is: stay inconspicuous, be defensive, dress like the locals, and hide the car!
The day was freezing cold, minus 10 degrees Celsius, and there was an icy wind. Things were quiet at the AO Central Asia Cement yard; a certain productive calm prevailed there, a good opportunity for this picture.

Not exactly in the mountains, but my thoughts are with those who are and have lost their homes to fire.
I believe I can see the future
Cause I repeat the same routine
I think I used to have a purpose
Then again
That might have been a dream
I think I used to have a voice
Now I never make a sound
And I just do what i've been told
I really don't want
Them to come around
Oh no
Not exactly a work of art, but interesting behavior nonetheless. I've always thought that rushing (the dance) was like singles dating (trying to hookup) and the weed ceremony is commitment, the ring, engagement, lets raise a family as its only done during and just prior to nesting and maybe it is, but this clip doesn't exactly back up that theory. The ceremony was interrupted and the female didn't miss a beat and continued with the new guy.
