Taken at low tide, the Wye flows into the Bristol Channel, along side the River Severn, here at Chepstow.

The Castle is in Wales, the White House across the bridge is in Gloucester, England.

It is amazing to think that it was exactly a week that we stood by the flooded River Wye as it rushed through Hereford.

Exactly 5 years ago today, in the Eastern Eifel near Kruft, another of the similar photos I've already shown of this unique poppy field.

I was there again at the beginning of this week:

White field lupins are currently blooming in this spot...and the tree in the background is still standing.

Of course I knew exactly what I was going to see. Half a dozen or more YouTube feeds had prepared me for the view, and beyond that quite a few of you had evidently been here too. And even by Iceland’s celebrity A list standards, this was a location that I knew was going to have my eyes springing from their sockets and bouncing about on the ground like table tennis balls. Arriving here in July as we did, most visitors were standing just to the left at the spot where the nearest puffin activity was taking place a few yards further away, which did at least mean that despite the numbers present, there wasn’t a jostle of togs trying to shoot the epic view in front of them.

By now, Lee and I had driven most of the 1,100 odd miles around the ring road in our rented bright yellow VW camper, to which you can add the Snaefellsnes detour. Great swathes of the north and east of the country had been bypassed on an eternally dreary and damp afternoon in our eagerness to get to the south coast and its collection of landscape jewels. Only the previous morning we’d waited in hope at Eystrahorn, over two hundred miles to the east, and then Vestrahorn before heading into the small town of Hofn for supplies. Both locations had remained elusive, making themselves completely invisible under grey shrouds and foiling our ambitions completely. From there we’d headed west to overnight beside the unworldly Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon and take photographs among the chunks of ice washed back onto the black sands of Diamond Beach at midnight under an endless veil of soft rain. The following morning we continued west, to a place where we joined the crowds on the narrow footpaths above the canyon of Fjadrarglufur before arriving sometime later in the small metropolis of Vik, hungry, tired, excited, and brimming with aromas that made other humans maintain their distance. By now, we were in a condition that only two middle aged unchecked males can achieve after five days on the road, and made straight for the local swimming pool to shower and wallow in the warm water, contemplating the eminence of Reynisfjall in front of us. Later, rested, watered and decidedly less pungent, we wandered onto the beach to photograph the stacks from the east, before hiking up the mountain to see what we could see from the top. In fact we took a picture or two while we were up there as well. Talk about whistle stop adventures! Twenty-two hours of daylight certainly gives you the chance to take a lot of photos, that’s for sure.

Even after that the day’s activities still had one final outing lying in wait as we drove a few miles further west to stand on the clifftop at Dyrholaey from where we could gaze happily at the vista before us. That classic view, so often photographed was about to become the subject of yet another viewfinder or two. In the foreground stood the Shrek-like monolith of Arnardrangur, the white tide washing lazily across the sand and around its imposing circumference. At the other end of the long black strip of Reynisfjara were the outlandish and huge sea stacks of Reynisdrangar, they in turn dwarfed by the enormous flat shelf of land jutting out into the ocean that we’d climbed just a few hours earlier. With a time machine we might have seen ourselves a mile or two away, squinting back into the low sun. For a while we watched the puffins and planned a pit stop here for the following day with the long lenses. Everyone loves a puffin don’t they? You can see mine in this album if you feel moved to do so. No pressure, but our hero does have a beak full of sand eels; just saying.

And those two paragraphs pretty much encapsulate the experience of our first trip to Iceland three summers ago. Non stop driving interspersed with non stop photography and only a couple of visits to the pool complex at Vik and a strangely spontaneous whale watching trip out of the handsome harbour of Husavik to break the rhythm. In a single week we managed to come away with images from more than twenty locations, some of them successful missions, others abject failures. Add to this the album full of random phone snapshots from downtown Reykjavik to the subarctic northern bays of Akureyri and Husavik; from the remote sulphurous moonscape of Hverir in the northeast of nowhere to the random red chair by the roadside near Hofn. I often look back at those rapidly composed phone snaps and grin at the memories. It’s the way of things when you only have a week and there are so many things you daren’t miss. We had at least managed to visit every place on the itinerary we’d made and agreed upon, and found a couple of unexpected gems to add to it too.

And now, Iceland awaits our return visit. This time we have double the days available and rather fewer miles to cover. With four bases there will be opportunities to return to some favoured locations at least once or twice, and catch them in different moods. As before, a list of beauty spots has been drafted, some of them brand new, while others will come forward to greet us like old acquaintances. Beside the utter failures of Eystrahorn and Vestrahorn in the south east, there are places where justice wasn’t fully done as we rushed hither and thither across the barren yet bewildering landscape. Kirkjufell – what on earth was I up to there? Need to do better this time. And then there are places like this, where I was happy enough with the image I came away with, but I’m in no doubt that there are more compositions to be had both on and around this headland. Maybe we’ll even manage to drag ourselves out early enough to capture a sunrise here.

And do you know what? We might even get to see the aurora. Of course lots of non togs assume that's all we're going for, although in truth we'd barely considered it. But it's very much a possibility in September so the books tell us. I even know which website to check now. I’d better start practising some night time photography again then. Now then, focus manually on the distant lamppost………….

Can you hold on for a second, on second thought maybe two while I get my second phone! (It took me 27 tries to get the stop watch function to stop on exactly 1 second.)

Spotted Cucumber Beetles have exactly twelve black spots on the back of their tiny, bright lime green bodies. Like many of their beetle cousins, these little guys have wonderful shimmery colors and this one looked beautiful against the bright orange petal of the Mexican Sunflower. But they're incredibly destructive eating almost everything we love growing in the vegetable garden - not just cucumbers. :)

#MacroMondays - Mon -Nov 23 2020 - Theme - #Spiky

This is my entry for the theme "Spiky". Its a close-up of a pineapple .. and as you can see - each spike further has spikes..

I clicked the image with Noir filter "ON" on my phone and adjusted the slider to give this dark look. The only editing I have done is to add a vignette to reduce the distraction from the lighted portion on the top. It didn't look so distracting on the phone (vs. laptop).

I wanted to retake the shot today but on my return from work I found that the pineapple was a shape shifter and had changed its form to pineapple chutney .. so here I am .. with yesterday's shot and hoping that the vignette will do what was intended of it.

Editing : Vignette in Picasa.

It's not exactly Boot Hill, there are no records of gunfights in the middle of Ross, but some convicts are buried here.

I've chosen a very wide angle here, because that's the sense you get in the Midlands. The wide open spaces of prime sheep country under a looming sky. The sky is actually a very real presence in these Midlands landscapes, especially at night, where the dark skies provide a perfect viewing of the Milky Way, and if one is lucky, the Aurora Australis.

I'll finish today's lot with these amazing words of Emily Dickinson's. Please read it slowly, and perhaps several times over for its impact:

"Of Death I try to think like this —

The Well in which they lay us

Is but the Likeness of the Brook

That menaced not to slay us,

But to invite by that Dismay

Which is the Zest of sweetness

To the same Flower Hesperian,

Decoying but to greet us —

I do remember when a Child

With bolder Playmates straying

To where a Brook that seemed a Sea

Withheld us by its roaring

From just the Purple Flower beyond

Until constrained to clutch it

If Doom itself were the result,

The boldest leaped, and clutched it —" [Poem 1588].

I can hear her voice now.

Terrace formations at Mammoth Hot Springs area in Yellowstone National Park. Not sure exactly how these how these terrace-like formations develop, but they look really cool!

MO is not exactly what I would call a particularly beautiful state, sure it has its nice locations but most of it, especially where I live, is just trees and small hills with some weedy fields. Every so often however, you can find that magic spot, and so was the case here at Cedar Gap, MO. One of the tree's turned particularly beautiful and made this window of gorgeous color viewing BNSF's Thayer Subdivision.

exactly why Spring inspires

exactly how I feel sometimes

She used to stop on that bench with the illusion

That behind her the sunset wasn't just a colored wall of orange-red sun

The tree next door with its autumn leaves

A magical touch of a children's book

The leaves fell silently on the bench

And on the ground creating a colorful carpet of light

There wasn't much traffic along that stretch of road

And that's exactly why he chose her

No passerby would have sat next to her,

no car would disturb his thoughts

but now she's not here and the tree and the bench wonder why

there will be no answers

there will be no other days

harmony is shaken by a shiver of wind

another trembling leaf has fallen

everything is silent now on that stretch of road...

Exactly in this moment it was perfect to took photos, because the light was warm and wonderful. So much leaves were on the ground. Do you also enjoy the sound of leaves rustle.

Not exactly the right conditions for the bright early morning sunshine we were hoping for but the mist did add some atmosphere to the photo.

Taken using the Provoke Camera app. It doesn't exactly promise users a Moriyama effect, but I can see where the high contrast inspiration possibly came from. I'd never seen pool played on a full size snooker table before - a bit strange.

Not exactly a pond, but a location on the Hairy Loch where the reeds have yet to encroach, forming a nicely symmetrical shape. Much easier to reach this spot when the boggy ground is frozen.

This is a couple of photos made with two of my vintage lenses. Not the same time and not exactly the same place. Both with a similar post process for a vintage look.

Exactly three years ago we were on holiday in beautiful Copenhagen. On April 30 we visited the district Ørestad by bike to have a look at the stunning architecture there (see first comment).

On our way back to our lovely hotel which was located directly at the canal we passed The Royal Library, called The Black Diamond, here on the left hand side and public authority buildings on the right hand side, illuminated by the evening sun.

I loved the reflections on the library and the evening light.

Going down the memory lane ... I have very fond memories of this city and its people ... a care-free time !

Love & Peace !

Taken inside a garden at Wat Ounalom. Not exactly sure what it is, but Google Lens identified it as Cactus Coreid, a.k.a. a Chelinidea vittiger bug. S/he must have been napping in the sun since I got very close for this capture and s/he didn't move. 😁

PS: to those I follow 🙋♂️

Apologies for falling behind with comments and faves. After I turned sixty, I thought I would have more free time but I'm now working six days a week from 6 AM to 6 PM. I love my job; not complaining too much, but it's taking a toll on the free time I have for Flickr. Taking a timeout for a month or two. No hard feelings if you unfollow me.

Thank you for your understanding! 💖

Well, not exactly, but inspired by. Or possibly the Russian Marsokhod (with those lovely bevelled gear wheels). I had to order some extra white cones as there's four on each axle. And I thought it looked better out in the dirt than on the desk, it shows of the rambling nature of the design, and it's fun to take a rover out in the garden occasionally.

Almost exactly 10 years ago, I was on a cycling holiday alone in the north of Germany. Unfortunately, I had an accident on the road and sustained an open fracture of my elbow. Nobody wanted to help me, I lay helpless and in pain on the side of the road. A young woman then stopped, forgot all her plans and provided me with everything I needed. Shortly afterwards, I was able to have an operation in the clinic. She was my guardian angel. Despite the great distance from where I live, we are still friends today. Close friends! She gave me this beautiful amaryllis. I am grateful to her, grateful for this friendship ♥️

not sure exactly when, but it was sometime back when i had that apartment over at Voroznia. i just remember her mentioning “neighbor.” Lol, told y’all, i forget a lot. but i can picture it: me on my balcony, her on hers, yelling "hello!" from across the way. sounds about right.

i won’t pretend we’ve had deep convos or that i know her inside and out. but what i can say is she’s always been kind. always says hi, and whenever we do talk, it’s easy and natural. even with a bit of a language barrier.

just catching a photo of us hanging out, escaping the noise for a bit. don’t ask me what’s on her phone though... that’s her story to tell. my lips are sealed 😏

thanks girlie 💕

Well not exactly as day was dawning but quite early! It was very foggy this morning so I spontaneously set off to snap what I thought would be a foggy seaside somewhere or other. Unfortunately, the fog was disippating faster than I could drive so I gave up on that and found myself back at Emsworth Harbour.

It is permanently low tide in Emsworth so I yet again trudged around in the mud until I found some water. The fog had long gone but the water was still and reflective... all was not lost.

It was all very grey and monotone which, with the still water, reflections and a post or two made for a reasonable setting.

Really like the reflections on this one, particularly the green marker post and the psuedo minimalistic feel of it.

Dear Flickr Friends,

Exactly one year ago I uploaded my first picture "Clouds over Passau" to Flickr. Since then I added 179 pictures. It's been a very interesting time and I would like to use this opportunity to thank you all for your interest in my pictures, for all your comments, interesting discussions via flickr-mail, faves and invitations during my first twelve months on Flickr. I have learned a lot during this one year and I'm looking forward to what the next twelve months may bring.

Thanks

On a rainy summer day in Passau, Germany, I was lucky to get some sun for this view over the Inn river.

The library opened almost exactly 25 years ago, on April 18th, 1996, the 90th anniversary of the great San Francisco earthquake and fire. Architects are James Ingo Freed and Cathy Simon. The atrium is 5 stories high, topped by the skylight.

Exactly 4 years ago to the day, I stood with my buddy at the top of Olmsted Point in Yosemite and watched this great sunset - and as usual, you should never go too early - the same applies here - these great colors emerged in around 20 minutes , after the sun disappeared over the horizon. I think it was worth the wait...

**Exactly 4 years ago** Waterfall at Trollstigveien:-)

not exactly a secret anymore - this spot has seen plenty of photographs taken. still, going there, waiting for the right light, hoping no clouds could interfere with what I am searching for and while waiting, watching the structure of the rocks on front of me change their structure every minute - is always special.

Doing exactly what they were purchased to do, a pair of Chessie SD50’s brings a trainload of tidewater-bound coal through Hinton, West Virginia on the Chesapeake & Ohio main line. SD50’s gained a reputation as being unreliable, but unconfirmed stories of the C&O pushing the earliest units to their limits did circulate among the railfan grapevine.

Our Daily Challenge 2 ...

So... thanks so much again to EVERYONE who comments, looks and faves my pictures!

I guess this made Front Page .... pretty cool!

I am always inspired by my many contacts, friends and groups ....

Not exactly the view through the back of the closet, but this is just outside my back door.

Things didn’t go exactly as planned on my recent trip into the mountains, but it was great to get out there again and the view from Second Lake sure was nice.

I had diving booties with me the last few times into the Sierras, but this was the first time I used them. They made standing in the knee deep water for half an hour bearable…even pleasant.

I look forward to catching up with everyone over the next few days. As always, your comments are much appreciated!

When planning a fall trip to Montana I never expected three separate snow storms within a week but that exactly what happened. Here an eastbound empty hopper train climbs Bozeman Pass on the morning after the third storm of the week as the sun highlights the mountain peaks above.

Not exactly what I went out for, after a 20 min drive in unbroken Winter sun, not a cloud in the sky I was hoping for better conditions than this but on approaching the River Trent I was greeted with a thick layer of fog. 70808 passes Sawley with 6M57 07:02 Lindsey to Kingsbury (taken with a pole)

Many of you know exactly where this was taken along Rt 191 north of Jackson, WY (USA).

So many people were stopping everyday along this section of the highway but not as many as OxBow Bend.

It's late morning maybe 930a as I remember...and I had just left OxBow Bend where I just happened to run into James Neeley and we had a nice chat as the roar of shutters were clicking away.

This group of horses broke up shortly after my arrival and gravitated to the fence where a crowd of people anxiously awaited and were in awe of how beautiful this scene was.

This is horseback riding territory !!

Thanks for stopping by.
