Week 4:52 ABANDONMENT

I knew exactly which file to find the perfect pic for this theme. This was taken last year at Dungeness, a baron coastal wasteland which is littered with fishing boat skeletons left to rot in the salty sea air. A haven for photographers, hence there are usually quite of few of us there! You may have seen lots of images on Flickr, Gary Neave is a regular visitor.

** Not exactly certain where I took this shot but it was somewhere on the Maine side of the Canadian border . I was driving from Bar Harbour to Saint George in Quebec I had pulled over to take a break from driving when I noticed the train tracks. I thought the tracks winding through the autumn foliage was rather pleasing

This is not exactly what it appears to be. It sets up almost like a triptych with the 3 distinct sections. Let's unpick it. The two left sections are sections of the same building, the right hand section is another building set back from the other but I've photographed it to line up the edges in the way you see here. That middle stairwell is one of my favourite architectural features in all of Croydon. There is just something about it that I really love. It tells you a little bit about itself but not everything, leaving me always wanting more. Here I think it ties the left and right side together very nicely.

The blended result of the airliner light trails exactly is what I want. Thank you so much, Mark Jones who gave me the right direction and a great short cut to stack those 22 images in Photoshop, this is truly a big credit indeed. So, Flickr is a nice place to be and to stay, when you got some troubles in photography or the operations of software, there are lot of kindly friends standing by your side around.

Thanks again Mark! Your helping hands just appeared in time which let me had gotten a huge step in advancement. 😅

Exactly a year ago, I started a long walk through the Netherlands that goes from the north coast (in Pieterburen near the Waddenzee) and ends in the south on the border with Belgium (the Pietersberg). It is a 500 km walk that is divided in 26 stretches, and it took me exactly one month to do the whole trip. I did it as part of a 6 months sabbatical (that also brought me to Central Asia).

Until now I haven't posted many shots (I think only this one (www.flickr.com/photos/115540984@N02/48774781987/in/datepo...) , mainly because the amount and quality of my Central Asia pictures.

But since the Corona outbreak I realize that I was very lucky that it happened this year, and not last.

The shot here was taken in Zelhem along the track, and it shows how glorious spring can be. And yes, right now spring has exploded here again!

I know...looks exactly like autumn. But it's all fresh foliage from a few weeks ago succumbing to what has become an obvious personal processing preference. I've been thinking I need to present a "greener" view of the season but I always seem to end up here... browns and golds replacing greens, dark replacing light. Speaks poorly to my state of mind... ;-)

Dún Aonghasa (Unofficial anglicised version Dun Aengus) is the best-known of several prehistoric hill forts on the Aran Islands of County Galway, Republic of Ireland. It lies on Inis Mór, at the edge of a 100-metre-high (330 ft) cliff.

A popular tourist attraction, Dún Aonghasa is an important archaeological site.

History

It is not known exactly when Dún Aonghasa was built, though it is now thought that most of the structures date from the Bronze Age and Iron Age. T. F. O'Rahilly surmised in what is known as O'Rahilly's historical model that it was built in the 2nd century BC by the Builg following the Laginian conquest of Connacht.Excavations at the site indicate that the first construction goes back to 1100 BC, when rubble was piled against large upright stones to form the first enclosure. Around 500 BC, the triple wall defenses were probably constructed along the fort's western side.

The 19th-century artist George Petrie called "Dún Aonghasa" "the most magnificent barbaric monument in Europe". Its name, meaning "Fort of Aonghas", may refer to the pre-Christian god of the same name described in Irish mythology, or the mythical king, Aonghus mac Úmhór. It has thus traditionally been associated with the Fir Bolg.

Form and function

The fort consists of a series of four concentric walls of dry stone construction, built on a high cliff some one hundred metres above the sea. At the time of its construction sea levels were considerably lower and a recent Radio Telefis Eireann documentary estimates that originally it was 1000 metres from the sea. Surviving stonework is four metres wide at some points. The original shape was presumably oval or D-shaped but parts of the cliff and fort have since collapsed into the sea. Outside the third ring of walls lies a defensive system of stone slabs, known as a cheval de frise, planted in an upright position in the ground and still largely well-preserved. These ruins also feature a huge rectangular stone slab, the function of which is unknown. Impressively large among prehistoric ruins, the outermost wall of Dún Aonghasa encloses an area of approximately 6 hectares (14 acres).

Today

The walls of Dún Aonghasa have been rebuilt to a height of 6m and have wall walks, chambers, and flights of stairs. The restoration is easily distinguished from the original construction by the use of mortar.[citation needed]

There is a small museum illustrating the history of the fort and its possible functions. Also in the vicinity is a Neolithic tomb and a small heritage park featuring examples of a traditional thatched cottage and an illegal poteen distillery.

#Buckle

The research for what exactly the (belt) buckle you can see in my image is called almost took longer than taking the photo itself – because this is actually one of my test shots ;) But sometimes the test shot is the best, and I liked it, so I went for it. I couldn't find a definite term for this type of buckle but on Wikipedia, I found the so-called "Western or cowboy buckle" that at least works in the same way as this buckle does: it has a pin on the underside which is inserted into the belt hole of choice (and comfort). This buckle even has two pins, one which fixates the leather strap underneath the buckle, and the aforementioned pin to adjust the belt's length. This also makes it easy to take the buckle off the belt without damaging either belt or buckle.

The belt is what one might call a fashion belt (it belongs to my Mom, magrit k., and she says that it is from the 1970s or 80s) but unlike most fashion things today it is of very sturdy and good quality. Although the belt is very slim (only 1,4 cm / 0,55 inches wide), the red leather strap itself is really thick (3 mm / 0,11 inches) and it's still in excellent condition.

But enough of the belt because here I have photographed the buckle on its own. The width of the buckle (and therefore also of the frame) is 1,8 cm / 0,70 inches. The length of the decorative element in the buckle's centre part is 2,5 cm / 0,98 inches. That deco element is embossed with tiny dots (bokeh!) and its shape is what I'd describe as a hybrid between an H and an X (to me it also looks like a tiny person with raised arms reminiscent of some statues of the Mayan culture).

Light sources were a natural light photo lamp from above and two LED lights, one from the left (equipped with the semi-translucent yellow bottle cap colour "filter") and one from the right (red transparent chocolate box colour "filter" placed in front of it). It's a single shot captured wide open at F2.8 for that extra shallow DOF and bokeh.

One last thought: The small red and orange "bokeh worms" in the upper middle look like telescope eyes to me, and together with the colours this reminded me of a Gecarcinus quadratus, a colourful land crab species that is also known as "Halloween crab" or "Halloween moon crab". So maybe this isn't a belt buckle at all, but a "Halloween buckle crab" ;)

HMM, Everyone, and have a great week ahead!

Running exactly 10 hours late, Amtrak train #58, The City of New Orleans, is just outside their final destination of Chicago Union Station with some much needed help from CN after their long distance Siemens Charger died near Fulton, KY, which than prompted a new leader which just so happened to be CN 5262, a SD40-2W. Seen here turning the corner south at 18th street in Chinatowns “Ping Tom Park” as the engineer flips on the ditch lights and puts on a show for us fans on the 18th street bridge. Taken: 5-9-23

The train would shove off the GM&O wye via 21st street and head into Chicago Union Station, giving us the opportunity to walk down to other end of the bridge for a 2nd photo. All Amtrak trains that take the CN, shove via 21st street due to the Saint Charles Air Line being out of service for almost 4 years now.

Exactly one year ago I flew to Iceland. It was a gift that the country was covered with a thick blanket of snow

When you are in a plane and have no access to a camera, you make the best use of your phone. That is exactly what happened here. Looking out the airplane window, I saw this cloud and the sun. I took few photos with my iPhone out of the plane windows so I can stitch them into a panorama.

I do not remember exactly when I began searching for waterfalls with my kids in the woods of Switzerland. But our little adventures developed into a family hobby. At some point in time my children have begun to say to all people we met on our trips „We are waterfall chasers!“. Well, a few weeks after I had found this little waterfall here, I also led my friend Sam form the USA to this place in a fairytale forest. And the clan of „Waterfall chasers“ has grown by one member from overseas.

Well, I will be away during some weeks and I wish everyone a wonderful summer ;-)

Thank you for your time and interest in my photos, your visit is most appreciated :-)

Exactly a month after my previous visit to Stourhead, I returned to see the trees changing colour, as the days get shorter. The House at Stourhead is on higher ground than the landscaped gardens. Since the COVID restrictions the route to the gardens is via the higher level and a long walk down through woodland. We were rewarded with this beautiful view over the treetops. The Autumn colours in the trees were beginning to show.

Which is exactly what it was, when you stood on the top of the cliffs at St Abbs in Scotland.

The silence was broken by the sound of the many sea birds, which nest on the rocks lower down.

The small Lighthouse of St Abbs Head is perched on the top of the cliff face, beaming light out to sea, warning of the perils of getting to close.

A beautiful sunrise cascaded its colour across the sky, as a new day dawns.

Exactly 8 years ago today at the blue hour in Frankfurt am Main.

Exactly on time EC 197 accelerates out of Lindau in the very last light of day bound for Munich. I tried for this shot with the earlier train last October but had no luck with the clouds. I was sweating bullets watching the shadows grow, any delay would have meant failure but thankfully things came together. With electrification of the line rapidly advancing this will almost certainly be the last summer for this shot minus the poles. With such a small window of light the poles will almost certainly ruin the shot.

Exactly a year ago I made this shot while travelling through Denmark. It seems ages ago, while on the other hand time flies. The June month last year was wonderful, very sunny and warm, while until now the month was cold and the weather very variable.

I took this shot at the island of Mandö. I first went to Römö (a Waddensea island) but because of mass tourism I fled from there, and ended up at this little gem (when you like solitude) where Oystercatcher were the main birds around. They nestled everywhere, and caused a lot of noise when you came too close.

This scene was at the local campsite, and it was very amusing to see these youngsters chasing their parents. Whenever it had caught something the young ran towards one of them, and literally pulled the prey out of the mouth of their parents. They were also curious to see what they were doing.

Leibniz (Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, 1646 - 1716) was a German polymath. He is considered one of the most important pioneers of the Enlightenment.

Cafe Leibniz is not exactly an inviting place. I have never been in there.

On the other hand, the farmers' market, which takes place every morning except Sundays until 1 pm in Leibnizgasse, is a wonderful fruit and vegetable and criers' market and a must for any advanced visitor to Vienna. It is a part of the Viktor-Adler-Markt (far right in the picture), which is open all day.

This market in Favoriten, the 10th district of Vienna, is also very popular with Viennese from other districts. On Saturday it is better to avoid it.

No one is going to love you exactly like you imagine. No one is ever going to read your mind and take every star from the sky at the perfect time and hand it to you. No one is going to show up at your door on a horse, with a shoe you lost. Do you understand? That's why you have to love yourself enough, so that any other love just adds more candles to the cake you've already iced.

No one knows exactly how many gods and goddesses there are in the Taiwanese pantheon. Many were once mere mortals on Earth.Almost every god, even those like the Jade Emperor who are believed to have been around for eternity, have birthdays which their devotees celebrate with gusto. Folk beliefs continue to play a high-profile role in society, Some people come to temples to have their thought uplift and behavior refined. A lot of folk rituals are also designed to bring immediate personal benefit, such as protection from disease-spreading demons or success in school examinations.

Thanks to those of you who wished me a good Holiday, actually I do not leave till Saturday so you will have to put up with me for a few more days.

This image could not be more different from the previous one of Wild Poppies. This is an image of the formal container garden outside the Orangery at Versailles in France. Not quite my sort of garden but I do rather like the geometry of the shot. It’s a long way from nature but then so are most gardens if we are honest
