When is the Midpoint of Winter? Many people think the midpoint of winter is always Groundhog Day, but it varies. If you check the latest edition of the Farmers' Almanac, you'll see that it's Thursday, February 3, 2022—the exact halfway point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox.

The exact time when the Klus was built is unknown, it was first mentioned in a document in 1224. It may have belonged to a Benedictine monastery founded in the 9th century by the hermit Thetwif and renovated by Bishop Milo of Minden in 992, which had already been relocated to Minden around 1000.

The gardens were established in 1927 to honor Frank Presby, a noted horticulturalist and a founding member of the American Iris Society. This world-class collection now includes approximately 10,000 individual plants, representing 6 species and over 3,000 different named varieties of irises. It is the largest non-commercial garden dedicated to irises in the world.[3]"

los que ya las olvidan, a las cosas;
que por mí vayan todos

*Edificio “La Giralda”. Badajoz. Extremadura.
alegre, fina y rubia-,
mirada por mis ojos negros- como ella-,
apasionadamente!
¡Inefable Giralda,
gracia e inteligencia, tallo libre

The exact origin of St. Mary’s is unknown, but is likely to be around 1000 – Aumericus de Harcourt is the first recorded priest, in 1204. The present structure was almost certainly pre-dated by earlier buildings, but the first recorded reference is a charter of 1272 granting an indulgence “to all contributors to the building or the repairing of the church at Henley”. St. Mary’s is basically a 13th century building, but was enlarged and remodelled in the 15th century and again in the 19th century, so the building history is hard to decipher. The 13th century church consisted of a sanctuary (chancel), nave, aisles and probably transepts. Externally there is no remnant of this church, and the Early English style of the west doorway is, in fact, Victorian.

Udny Castle is a tower house in the parish of Udny, southwest of the village of Pitmedden and northeast of the hamlet of Udny Green, Aberdeenshire, in the northeast of Scotland. The area is generally flat but the castle is sited on the highest ground and can be seen for a considerable distance. Its exact construction date is unknown, but its foundations probably date from the late 14th or early 15th century. Additional storeys were added and a later extension, described as a "modern mansion", was incorporated but subsequently demolished. It is a Category A listed building.
Sited on the highest area in a generally flat terrain, the castle can be seen from a considerable distance. The exact construction date is not known but it was probably initially constructed by the Udny family in the 14th or 15th century. The property is first recorded when it is shown on a charter for David II instigated by Ronald of Uldney.
MacGibbon and Ross suggested a construction date of the turn of the 16–17th centuries, but the indentation of the upper floors and thickness of the foundation walls suggest a much earlier date. The main construction work of the keep is believed to have spanned over 100 years and been undertaken by three consecutive lairds; it is reported to have "ruined them all".
The Udny family also owned Knockhall Castle and lived there until 1734 when Knockhall was destroyed by fire; they then returned to Udny. Jamie Fleeman, the Laird's fool, was responsible for saving the family papers from being destroyed in the fire.
The castle was abandoned sometime around 1775 then repair work was undertaken in 1801.
Colonel John Robert Fullerton Udny inherited the estate in 1802. He had been an army officer since 1797 but retired after his marriage to Emily Fitzhugh in 1812. Thereafter he only visited the estate occasionally as his main residence was in London. The couple had one son, John Augustus Udny, but he died a bachelor in 1859. The Colonel's wife died in 1846 after which he had an affair with Ann Allat whom he married on 2 January 1854. However, the couple had a son, John Henry Udny, born out of wedlock on 9 May 1853. A legal case was heard by the House of Lords as to whether John Henry was entitled to inherit the estate as his parents had been unmarried when he was born. The legal arguments describe how the Colonel had wished to do restoration work on the castle but could not afford to do so "owing chiefly to his connection with the turf".
The Colonel died in 1861. The House of Lords had decided in favour of John Henry and he inherited the estate as "though illegitimate at his birth, [he] was legitimated by the subsequent marriage of his parents".
In 1887, it is recorded as owned by John Hay Udny and had been in the family's ownership for several centuries.
Bartizans were included when an extra storey was added in the 17th century.
A mansion house in the baronial style was added in 1874–75 to the design of architect James Maitland Wardrop (of the Wardrop and Anderson company) but was subsequently demolished during the 1960s. Wardrop's son, Hew, was also an architect and undertook some of the decorative work at the castle. He died suddenly of appendicitis while working at the castle on 4 November 1887.
In 1964, restoration work was begun on the original tower house and the mansion house was demolished. Historic Scotland listed the castle as a Category A listed building in April 1971.

Virginia - Limbs and leaves; sunrise; the exact moment that darkness began to be overtaken by light....
Photographing at dawn
Dawn is a special time for photographers who want to capture atmospheric landscape images. The colors of the sky are soft and harmonious, the light is soft and diffuse, and nature slowly comes to life. But how can you photograph the dawn in the best possible way? Here are some tips that can help you.
- Plan ahead: find a suitable location from which you have a good view of the horizon. Find out the exact time of sunrise and be there at least half an hour before to set up and take advantage of the best lighting conditions - Use a tripod: since the light is still weak at dawn, you need a longer exposure time to capture enough detail. Therefore, to avoid camera shake, you should use a tripod. It also allows you to better frame the image and try different settings - Experiment with the aperture: The aperture affects the depth of field and the light intensity of your image. Depending on whether you want a sharp foreground or a blurred background, you can choose an open or closed aperture. An open aperture lets in more light, but reduces the depth of field. A closed aperture increases depth of field but decreases light - Play with exposure compensation: your camera's metering can be fooled by the bright light of the sky, resulting in dark or pale images. To avoid this, you can use exposure compensation to make the image brighter or darker. Positive exposure compensation makes the image brighter, negative exposure compensation makes it darker - Shoot in RAW format: RAW format stores more information than JPEG format and allows you to better post-process your image. For example, you can adjust the white balance to make the colors more natural or intense. Or you can increase the contrast to create more depth.
Dawn is a magical time that offers you many opportunities to express your creativity. Try different settings and perspectives and let the colors and moods inspire you. Have fun photographing!
This was undoubtedly the highlight of my 2019 Michigan trip. This was a lifer for me and my number one warbler goal for this year. What made it more special was it was a female and I got to share my find with a client. The story behind the find was remarkable as well. It certainly was an answer to prayer and also the fruit of persistence in the field.
THE STORY:
The weather was cold and rainy and the conditions had been challenging. Driving slowly along the soggy and somewhat challenging dirt roads with windows down I thought I heard a M0urning Warbler sing. We stopped and listened but he never sang again but we enjoyed a Nashvi11e Warbler before resuming our warbler quest. Soon we encountered a downed tree and had to turn around. We went down a different dirt road and soon again encountered a downed tree. We had no choice but to backtrack completely. As we drove slowly along I heard again what I thought was a M0urning Warbler. We stopped and realized it was the exact same place as before. Again he never sang again. Then I saw a bird foraging low and bins raised I was amazed to see a female Lawrence's Warbler. If not for the two downed trees and the phantom M0urning Warbler we never would have found this bird. May she nest successfully and raise a male Lawrence's and may he return nearby in 2020 to breed!
I know you've seen this before but several people asked me to upload it as a stand-alone shot instead of an "also ran"! I wanted to do a different crop this time but I wasn't able to reproduce the exact effect - that's what happens when you fiddle around with many different things as I'm sure most of you know ;-)
I wish you all a great weekend!
