La Bodeguita del Medio is a restaurant-bar in Havana. It is a famous tourist destination because of the personalities which have patronized it: Salvador Allende, the poet Pablo Neruda, the artist Josignacio and many others. Ernest Hemingway is often associated with the site, but his connection here is weaker than those of other noted celebrities.

La Bodeguita lays claim to being the birthplace of the Mojito cocktail, prepared in the bar since its opening in 1942, although this is disputed as well. The rooms are full of curious objects, frames, photos, as well as the walls covered by signatures of famous or unknown customers, recounting the island's past.

Havana (Spanish: La Habana) is the capital city, province, major port, and leading commercial center of Cuba. The city proper has a population of 2.1 million inhabitants, and it spans a total of 728.26 square kilometers (281.18 square miles) – making it the largest city by area, the most populous city, and the third largest metropolitan area in the Caribbean region. The city extends mostly westward and southward from the bay. The sluggish Almendares River traverses the city from south to north, entering the Straits of Florida a few miles west of the bay.

The city of Havana was founded by the Spanish in the 16th century and due to its strategic location it served as a springboard for the Spanish conquest of the continent becoming a stopping point for the treasure-laden Spanish galleons on the crossing between the New World and the Old World. King Philip II of Spain granted Havana the title of City in 1592. Walls as well as forts were built to protect the old city. The sinking of the U.S. battleship Maine in Havana's harbor in 1898 was the immediate cause of the Spanish–American War.

Contemporary Havana can essentially be described as three cities in one: Old Havana, Vedado and the newer suburban districts. The city is the center of the Cuban government, and home to various ministries, headquarters of businesses and over 90 diplomatic offices.

A tour of Ernest Hemingway's house in Key West, Florida, 2010.

Courtesy of a mutated predecessor, quite a few of Hemingway's cats are polydactyl (many-toed). The original cat was a gift to Hemingway from a friend of his - she bred, and those litters bred. The Hemingway house aims to hold about sixty, with the numbers controlled through spaying.

The house was built by Asa Tift, a marine architect (and Confederate mariner), in 1851. In 1931 Hemingway purchased it and lived here with his second wife, Pauline, and their two sons until 1939.

Here, Hemingway completed the final draft of "A Farewell to Arms," as well as "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber".

This is the Willys-Overland Jeepster, the distinct design of Brooks Stevens, and an early example of a cross-over vehicle. The buying public were not ready in 1948 for a vehicle that later became cult, and after sales of around just 19,000, production was halted in 1950. This pristine example is parked outside Sloppy Joe's Bar, one of Key West's most famous, which boasts of its Ernest Hemingway connections.

Hemingway lived here in Key West from 1928 to 1940.

Hemingway used to walk through the Jardin du Luxembourg regularly and it was on his route to visit Gertrude Stein.

“Le Jardin du Luxembourg... was created beginning in 1612 by Marie de' Medici, the widow of King Henry IV of France, for a new residence she constructed, the Luxembourg Palace.”

All indications point that this is a first edition. According to the Internet it might be worth a little more than the $3.00 I paid.Who knows.

Another scene from Le Select. My first trip to Paris, in 1988, was very much about Ernest Hemingway, especially "The Sun Also Rises."

All men fear death. It’s a natural fear that consumes us all. We fear death because we feel that we haven’t loved well enough or loved at all, which ultimately are one and the same. However, when you make love with a truly great woman, one that deserves the utmost respect in this world and one that makes you feel truly powerful, that fear of death completely disappears. Because when you are sharing your body and heart with a great woman the world fades away. You two are the only ones in the entire universe. You conquer what most lesser men have never conquered before, you have conquered a great woman’s heart, the most vulnerable thing she can offer to another. Death no longer lingers in the mind. Fear no longer clouds your heart. Only passion for living, and for loving, become your sole reality. This is no easy task for it takes insurmountable courage. But remember this, for that moment when you are making love with a woman of true greatness you will feel immortal.

I believe that love that is true and real creates a respite from death. All cowardice comes from not loving or not loving well, which is the same thing. And when the man who is brave and true looks death squarely in the face like some rhino hunters I know or Belmonte, who is truly brave, it is because they love with sufficient passion to push death out of their minds. Until it returns, as it does to all men. And then you must make really good love again. Think about it.”
