Built in 1847, the Key West lighthouse allowed ships to navigate safely in the shallow waters around the Keys in the 1848s. The lighthouse is located in the south of the island at 938 Whitehead Street directly across from Hemingway's house. It is 22 meters high and you have to climb 88 spiral steps to enjoy the panorama !

Shot in Cuba at Ernest Hemingway's former home. Also known as Finca Vigia (Lookout Farm) . Ernest Hemingway's Cuba house is now known as the Museo Hemingway. Well worth the visit..most of the interiors have been well maintained. They are simple, inviting, and feel very personal. Hemingway's office is located in a tower accessible by stairs, overlooking a vast green landscape. As noted in another photo, the grounds of this large estate have been pretty sadly let go.

Hemingway lived in Cuba from 1939 to 1960, and wrote 7 novels there.

*Working Towards a Better World

It makes me so sad to know that there are people out there who somehow slip through the cracks. Their loved ones are just not able to help them, it is a long, hard and lonely battle I am sure, one that I hope we can find a way to eliminate. Suicide by drugs is only second to suicide through depression and of course there are other methods of suicide. There is much written about this serious problem that one can research, the sites are endless and not being an expert on this subject I find it hard to choose a specific one to link to, however, I do list 3 interesting quotes:

The sun also sets. - Ernest Hemingway

The so-called ‘psychotically depressed’ person who tries to kill herself doesn’t do so out of quote ‘hopelessness’ or any abstract conviction that life’s assets and debits do not square. And surely not because death seems suddenly appealing. The person in whom Its invisible agony reaches a certain unendurable level will kill herself the same way a trapped person will eventually jump from the window of a burning high-rise. Make no mistake about people who leap from burning windows. Their terror of falling from a great height is still just as great as it would be for you or me standing speculatively at the same window just checking out the view; i.e. the fear of falling remains a constant. The variable here is the other terror, the fire’s flames: when the flames get close enough, falling to death becomes the slightly less terrible of two terrors. It’s not desiring the fall; it’s terror of the flames. And yet nobody down on the sidewalk, looking up and yelling ‘Don’t!’ and ‘Hang on!’, can understand the jump. Not really. You’d have to have personally been trapped and felt flames to really understand a terror way beyond falling. -

David Foster Wallace.

Killing oneself is, anyway, a misnomer. We don't kill ourselves. We are simply defeated by the long, hard struggle to stay alive. When somebody dies after a long illness, people are apt to say, with a note of approval, "He fought so hard." And they are inclined to think, about a suicide, that no fight was involved, that somebody simply gave up. This is quite wrong. - Sally Brampton, Shoot the Damn Dog: A Memoir of Depression

GUIDING LIGHT – FOY VANCE

Bubbles in the Autumn garden

is unimpressed with the Indian Summer

he dons an Autumn/Winter coat

to keep his nether regions warm in slumber

thick fur to keep him feeling cosy

but now he says it's far too hot

and everything in the garden's too rosy

birds nesting in the chimney pots

where is the rain and wind and storms

he is a Maine Coon after all

he'd loved to see a bit of snow

he's unused to Summer in the Fall

he looks at me like Lee Van Cleef

slanted eyes like in The Good The Bad & The Ugly

sometimes he bares his pearly white teeth

but he always sees the good in me

he saves me from the bad in life

the ugly things that I don't see

protects me from myself sometimes

he's like an angel watching over me

he follows me around the garden

does not like his portrait taken

pulls funny faces that make me laugh

tells me when I'm being mistaken

don't take a picture of me; take the bees

he tells me with a swish of his tail

so big it looks like another cat

behind him on his daily prowl

I'm not an actor he tells me now

stop calling me Lee Van Cleef

but I can't help my laughter somehow

as he turns on a fallen leaf

quick on the draw just like in a Western

but he says he doesn't like Spaghetti

he would rather be likened to Clint Eastwood he says

or an actor like Victor Spinetti

I ask him now if he would like some treats

as he rounds me up to go indoors

believing I've escaped from the house like a pet

he leaps towards me with a bound of all four paws

his paws are soft; he never shows his claws

he is my gentle giant from Maine

he bounds across the slippery kitchen floor

skids across so happy in his own domain

He has me wrapped around his little finger

I dote on him and his wishes are my command

he sits on my lap until my legs ache

paw pounds me until I give into his demands

he can count to at least five

that's the magic desired number of treats

if I only give him three or four

he waits and will not eat

until I make them up to five

and then he opens his eyes wide

I love my Bubbles; he's my “little” darling

I'm lucky to have him always by my side.

Happy Caturday my friends!! : 0)

This is a male humpback whale investigating this boatman who is monitoring a diver collecting conch. The male whale was accompanying a female and her calf. This famed street is a beautiful confluence of art and culture,

history and heritage, exuberant celebrations, and a dash of

debauchery. Hey, these bars jam until 4 a.m. and there are

more than 100 bars in 15 blocks! There are more 'bars' per-

capita on Key West than in any other city in the United States!

Calle de la Estafeta, in the historic heart of Pamplona, is an emblematic setting for the San Fermín festivities, where, every year in July, the famous bullfights, known as "encierro", are held. This tradition, with roots in the 14th century and eternalized by Ernest Hemingway, turns the street into a vibrant adrenaline corridor. Outside the festive period, Estafeta remains alive, as a pedestrian street full of shops, pintxos bars and restaurants, frequented by locals and tourists alike. The traditional architecture, with wrought iron balconies, and the stone pavement reflect the rich history of the street, which was an important post office in the 18th century, perpetuating the name "Estafeta". In addition, the street is a significant stop on the Camino de Santiago, welcoming pilgrims who cross it, coming from the Puente de la Magdalena, and mingle with the festive atmosphere that characterizes it during the summer. Thus, Calle de la Estafeta represents the intersection between tradition, commerce and tourism in Pamplona.

This store was established in !876, it is in northern Michigan . It is famous because Ernest Hemingway spent decades of his youth hanging out here . In Hemingways short stories " Up North Michigan " , this store and the surrounding area are referred to frequently. It is still a thriving place , at least in the summer . Wintertime, it closes up , toooo cold for most people up here .

A large population of feral chickens inhabit Key West, Florida, reminders of the days when cock fighting was a sport on the island, and Ernest Hemingway spent hours in the local bars. Generations of released/escaped "Cubalaya" roosters have "cock-a-doodle-do-ed" their freedom and roamed free.

This handsome fellow is protected by law, but is not admired by all of the current residents of Key West. The chickens do provide local "color" and a link to the romantic past of Key West, but they are also noisy and messy. For now the Rhode Island Red hens/roosters still "rule the roost."

The Earth is a fine place and worth fighting for.

The bar went through two name changes before settling on Sloppy Joe's with the encouragement of Hemingway. The name was taken from the original Sloppy Joe's bar in Old Havana, that sold both liquor and iced seafood. In the high Cuban heat, the ice melted
