French chandeliers installed in the house by Pauline Hemingway - these replaced the original ceiling fans and, as the guide commented, "Every day I look at those chandeliers and think of Pauline".
The house was built by Asa Tift, a marine architect (and Confederate mariner), in 1851. In 1931 Hemingway purchased it and lived here with his second wife, Pauline, and their two sons until 1939.
Here, Hemingway completed the final draft of "A Farewell to Arms," as well as "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber".
This book was $2.75 US in 1940. In 2001, my friend purchased this rare book used from Crawford Doyle Booksellers in New York City for $250 US. Today, this book is reportedly worth upwards of $2000 CAN.
Toronto, Canada ~ August 4, 2013.
Here Ernest Hemingway wrote the first draft of ‘The Sun also Rises’. For sure he mentions the restaurant at length in ‘A Moveable Feast’ and says it was the nearest good café to his flat over the sawmill. Other clients included Jean Paul Sartre, Samuel Beckett, and F. Scott Fitzgerald, Pablo Picasso, Trotsky and Lenin.

July 2009
After spending 10 days on the road visiting various universities we have 2 days rest before returning home.
We headed to Oak Park to see the Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie Architecture School Historic District, in Oak Park, a suburb of Chicago.
We hadn't realised it was an open weekend and were greeted with masses of people visiting the various houses.
This is a once yearly event and you have to request tickets 5 years in advance according to the lady in the tourist office. The tickets are £500+ and are like goldust.
So we wandered but didn't get to see inside any of the buildings sadly. The area is very pretty and a bit of wikipedia research found me the names of the various houses!
We also got to see Ernest Hemingway's birthplace which was interesting too. That was much less busy!

Im Hintergrund ist ein kunstvoller, goldfarbener Messingständer zu erkennen, der möglicherweise Teil einer Schreibgarnitur ist. Das Bild wurde in Lima, Peru, aufgenommen.
The Cours Mirabeau is a wide thoroughfare, planted with double rows of plane-trees, bordered by fine houses and decorated by fountains. It follows the line of the old city wall and divides the town into two sections. The new town extends to the south and west; the old town, with its narrow, irregular streets and its old mansions dating from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, lies to the north. Along this avenue, which is lined on one side with banks and on the other with cafés, is the Deux Garçons, the most famous brasserie in Aix. Built in 1792, it has been frequented by the likes of Paul Cézanne, Ãmile Zola and Ernest Hemingway.

Le Polidor, 41 rue Monsieur le Prince, Paris.
The non-stop 20s partying moves on to Le Polidor, where Gil (Owen Wilson) leaps at the opportunity of getting Ernest Hemingway (Corey Stoll) to cast an eye over his novel.

"I've never seen one," the man drank his beer.
"No, you wouldn't have."
"I might have," the man said. "Just because you say I wouldn't have doesn't prove anything."
