My first time shooting the moon. I used a 500mm mirror lens, coupled with my 1.6x sensor on my 50D = 800mm equivalent. This photo is not cropped at all, it is how it came out from my camera, with contrast boosted a bit to see the craters in the moon clearer.

A cherry blossom is the name for the flower of cherry trees known as Sakura. In English, the word "sakura" is equivalent to the Prunus serrulata, Japanese flowering cherry. Cherry Blossoms are indigenous to many East Asian states including Japan, Korea, China. Japan has a wide variety of cherry blossoms (sakura); well over 200 cultivars can be found there. Every year the Japanese Meteorological Agency and the public track the sakura zensen (cherry-blossom front) as it moves northward up the archipelago with the approach of warmer weather via nightly forecasts following the weather segment of news programs. The blossoming begins in Okinawa in January and typically reaches Kyoto and Tokyo at the end of March or the beginning of April. It proceeds into areas at the higher altitudes and northward, arriving in Hokkaidō a few weeks later. Japanese pay close attention to these forecasts and turn out in large numbers at parks, shrines, and temples with family and friends to hold flower-viewing parties. Hanami festivals celebrate the beauty of the cherry blossom and for many are a chance to relax and enjoy the beautiful view. The custom of hanami dates back many centuries in Japan. Most Japanese schools and public buildings have cherry blossom trees outside of them. Since the fiscal and school year both begin in April, in many parts of Honshū, the first day of work or school coincides with the cherry blossom season. Very very beautiful!

Cairo's equivalent of the Moscow Kremlin, the Citadel was home to the city's rulers for some 700 years. Built by Saladin in 1176, the fortified complex is divided into three vast enclosures, containing mosques, museums, battlements and residential buildings, dating from the 12th to the 19th centuries. This photograph shows the top of the prayer hall and green dome of the Mosque of Sultan al-Nasr, built between 1318 and 1335; it was the only Mamluke building inside the Citadel left standing by Mohammed Ali.

The clock was damaged when it was being unpacked in Cairo and has apparently never worked!

Equivalent of an engagement ceremony, the Ashirbaad ceremony takes place two- three days before the wedding date.
For this ceremony, first the groom's family (excluding the groom) visit the bride's home and shower her with blessings as well as with costly presents, usually in the presence of a priest who places an idol of Bhagwan Narayan in the front.
Later, the bride's family blesses the groom in his house and gifts him a ring, gold buttons and a watch. It is a kind of acceptance of the boy and the girl on both sides.

Skoda hails from this part of the world, in case you didn't know. It is like the Maruti equivalent of Czech, and you'll find Skodas dominating the roads.
Prague, Czech Republic.
For lack of a better place to put these pictures, I'm giving rione 4 -- and only rione 4 -- its own set. Rome has 22 rioni. They're basically administrative divisions/"neighborhoods." (The Parisian equivalent would be their arrondissements.)
Rione 4 -- Campo Marzio -- is a small area that includes Piazza del Popolo, up Pincio Hill (but just a small portion of it), over to the Tiber, and about 1/3 of the way down Via del Corso. Rione 4 is known as the "foreigners' quarter."
It includes Piazza di Spagna, Piazza dei Trinita Monti, and the Spanish Steps that connect them. It includes Via dei Condotti (and the parallel streets to the south) that are the high-end shopping area (Gucci, Bulgari, etc. have flagship stores here). It also includes Ara Pacis and the Mausoleum of Augustus over on the river. The Villa Medici is also in the neighborhood, between the Spanish Steps and Porta Pinciana.
The small alleys between the Spanish Steps and Piazza del Popolo have been home to a lot of poets, artists, and others, mainly in the 20th century.
The rest of these notes involve the area around the Spanish Steps.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Spanish Steps:
This is the highlight of the area. 135 steps on a 30 meter (95 foot) slope that connects the Piazza dei Trinita Monti (and associated church, which is under the auspices of the French Bourbons) at the top with the Spanish Embassy to the Vatican (in the Palazzo Monaldeschi) that gives Piazza di Spagna its name at the bottom of the steps.
A French diplomat to the Vatican, Etienne Gueffier, died in 1660, leaving part of his ample fortune behind to have these stairs built. They were delayed (contested wills, and all) and eventually completed in 1725. Two French writers noted that, barely 30 years later, the stairs were already in poor condition. They've undergone a number of restorations, most recently in 2015-16 (paid for by Bulgari, at the cost of about 1.5 million euros).
In an effort to keep these way-too-touristy steps from needing restoration every three weeks, the local government can (and will) fine you $250-300 for sitting down on the steps and $400-450 for damaging the steps.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Piazza di Spagna:
This is the small piazza at the base of the Spanish Steps. The focus of the piazza is the Fontana della Barcaccia, which was designed by Bernini. Not the famous one, but his dad, Pietro Bernini. It was built in 1623.
Also on the square, you'll find the Giorgio di Chirico House Museum, the Keats-Shelley Memorial House (directly to the right of the stairs; it's where John Keats decided to die; he spent the last year of his life in this house, dying of tuberculosis), On the opposite side of the stairs is Babington's (tea room) founded in the 1890s by two young women (a Brit and a New Zealander).
There's also the Spagna metro stop on the square (which has an elevator to take you to the upper level if you don't want to walk the 135 steps).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Trinita dei Monti:
The church (and very small piazza in front of it) was built on land bought by King Charles VIII of France in 1494. Construction began in 1502 by King Louis XII (to celebrate his successful invation of the Kingdom of Naples). The obelisk in front of this church is -- shockingly -- NOT Egyptian. It was made in 1789 (ironically, the year that the French Revolution started) and is a copy of the nearby Popolo Obelisk, hieroglyphics and all.
The church was consecrated in 1585. It's still an active church.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Via Margutta:
This is a very narrow street parallel to Via del Babuino (on the Pincian Hill side). Wikipedia says, it "originally was home to modest craftsmen, workshops and stables, but now hosts many art galleries and fashionable restaurants." What changed? 1953. Audrey Hepburn. Roman Holiday.
Gregory Peck's character lived in an apartment on our Via Margutta here at #51. (The exterior and courtyard shots from the movie are real, but the interior was shot on a sound stage.)
Speaking of the famous, among those who have lived here are Giulietta Masina (Italian film actress from the 1950s), Federico Fellini (one of the most famous directors of Italian cinema), Renato Guttuso (Italian painter and politician), Marina Punturieri (Italian socialite, actress, director, activist, stylist, writer, and TV personality), and Amerigo Tot (Hungarian sculptor and occasional actor).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Via Condotti:
This is a cross street of il Tridente. It starts at the base of the Spanish Steps and stretches towards the Tiber. I'll just note three things.
Caffe Greco (one of the most famous in Rome) is at Via Condotti 86. It was founded in 1760 and has hosted the likes of Stehndal, Goethe, Liszt, Byron, Keats. Marconi (inventor of the radio) probably dropped in a time or two as well. He lived at Via Condotti 11.
In 1986, fashion designer Valentino filed a lawsuit against McDonald's (as they'd just opened a restaurant nearby). Why? "Noise and disgusting odors" below his sixth-story palazzo. He lost.
I mentioned that this is the upscale shopping street. Well...Dior, Gucci, Valentino, Hermes, Armani, Jimmy Choo, Rolex, Tudor, Patek Philippe, Prada, Salvator Ferragamo, Celine, Van Cleef & Arpels, Dolce & Gabbana, Max Mara, Alberta Ferretti, Trussardi, Buccellati, Bulgari, Damiani, Tod's, Zegna, Cartier, Montblanc, Tiffany & Co., and Louis Vuitton all have stores here. Done.
When purchasing a tobacco product you are now charged a Government Sin Tax at a rate equivalent to 4 times more than is charged to alcohol even though the alcohol product is far more destructive and far more costly to society ? This bias and discrimination against one singled out product is the direct result of many years of very one-sided lobbying directed at Governments by those that don't like smoking but seem to hide and never mention other bad habits like smoking marijuana, drinking alcohol, junk food obesity, or gambling ? A lot of damaging misinformation has been submitted to Governments by these biased and one-sided lobby groups that constantly target their own choice of one select product out of the many that are out there ? The negative influence of this kind of targeted single product harassment has resulted in a severe over-taxation now being charged to the tobacco customer ? And now the purchaser must deal with an unjust and extremely over inflated price thst is the result of the continued influence and interference of these outsider prejudicial groups that don't purchase or use this particular long time legally sold public product ? Does this unfair situation and the harm being done constitute a form of damage and consumer fraud ? A Class action tax recovery suit and application for a fair share of the recent 24 billion dollar tobacco reclamation suit is now being considered ? www.flickr.com/photos/74039487@N02/52649460406/in/datepos...
And , in spite of the constant attack on this one singled out product, the incidence of cancer is on the rise among adults under 50 ? May 31, 2023 - Canada has created a brand new Cabinet position called Minister of health and Addictions and Carolyn Bennett has started off her new position with yet another attack on the tobacco industry by ordering that 50 additional new dire warning messages ( 25 in French and 25 in English) be placed on or within the cigarette packages that are already overcrowded by numerous dire warnings and graphic pictures ? This is interesting ? First they assist alcohol products by giving them a generous 4 times the sin tax break over the tobacco products, then they create legislation to legalize and to enable the smoking of cannabis, and, then they create more legislation enacting Bill C-218 to open up the flood gates of wide open at home and mobile phone sports parlor betting and casino gambling as never before seen or even imagined in Canada - And then, after all of this enabling assistance, they will then proceed to create a brand new Cabinet position called Minister of mental health and addictions, and her first order of business when assuming her new job is to once again target and single out tobacco products for yet another restriction ? 'Why not just blame everything on smoking ? '
Stats Can, October 16, 2017 - The Conference Board of Canada says that although actual smokers have decreased in their numbers, deaths and health care costs attributed to smoking are still increasing dramatically ? They explain the reason for such a paradox may lie in the way they view their statistics that will include all sickness and negative health problems (and we assume this includes both physical and mental health ) incurred by the quitters over their lifetime until death, as well as those of all the part timers and those who had just tried it for a while ? And so, even if you don't smoke now but may have at one time or another, all negative personal health issues and problems incurred during your non-smoking natural life will be blamed on smoking and listed by them to be caused as a result of smoking ? And so, for example, If an ex smoker dies naturally at say age 80, his death and all of his lifetime sickness and negative medical issues even if a non smoker for 50 years are seen by them to have been caused by smoking ? www.cbc.ca/news/business/smoking-economic-cost-1.4357096
The obsessed on one single product only, tobacco hating, radical social activist and class action lawyer Rob Cunningham, ( and some World Leaders ) want to establish and enforce a form of enforced population control that will allow current Governments the right to control certain citizens, (as chosen by them), and place a lifetime restriction on a legal product (as chosen by them) to be placed on certain segregated citizens without having to gain their knowledge, permission or consent ? What if they were to advertise a safe way to smoke cigarettes ? Sound ridiculous ? But is the idea of advertising 'safe' gambling not just another way to lure potential clients into the sports betting parlor and world of high stakes casino gambling ? Are these not gambling ads that serve to advertise, endorse and normalize gambling ? And what about connecting the word 'good' to the gambling vice where in Betano ads the sports hero claims that ; "You're 'good' if you gamble, but you're 'great' if you safe gamble" ?
May 25,2022 - The big gambling companies run ads targeting daytime TV viewers ? Is this idea of running gambling commercials that advertise 'limited play' and 'safe' gambling not the same as the alcohol industry running drinking ads that encorage drinking while telling you how much to drink, or, how about the tobacco industry running ads promoting safe smoking thru a suggested amount of cigs you should smoke per day, or the marijuana industry recommending the number of joints to safely smoke per day ? Or, what if they were to spin the advertisement; You're 'good' if you drink or you're good if you smoke cigarettes or you're good if you smoke pot, but you're even 'great' if you safe drink or safe smoke cigarettes or safe smoke pot ? ref, "All those sports betting ads you're seeing,, It's illegal says the Alberta gaming commission ?" www.cbc.ca/player/play/2302654019728
Jan 22 2024 - Although the battle appears over, and smokers have co-operated with 1 out of every 2 remaining smokers quitting in the last 10 years and numbers now down to a tolerable 12 % in Canada as compared to rates like 40% in other countries like Russia and China, some of the more extreme anti tobacco lobbyists are still not satisfied and demanding legislation be introduced for a total nation wide ban on all tobacco products forever ?
Continual dissatisfaction seems to be a standard in the never ending, blinkers on, blind-sided, focused and targeted attack on one singled out product, but on the other hand they don't seem bothered at all and tend to hide, overlook and will never mention the incredible progress, innovation and expansion of other sin taxable legally sold public social habits (or vices) like alcohol, pot, gambling, etc etc. that, ( while under their watch ) are all now enjoying an unprecedented period of unimpeded growth, expansion, profit and phenomenal success ? www.cbc.ca/player/play/2302654019728
Apr 16 2024 - The English Parliament makes history after introducing legislation ordering that no one in England currently under age 14, ( known as Generation Alpha ) will ever in their life be able to legally buy tobacco products for as long as they live ? Question - can it mean that an entire generation are presumed to be born with a lifetime probationary order put on them (without their permission) ? And, what will happen when time passes and all of this segregated generation become Adults and family providers, Mothers, Fathers, defenders of the nation fighting in wars, taxpayers, and voters of legal age ? What will happen when these grown up people want to enter into a public retail outlet in London and buy some pipe tobacco as a gift, but unlike every other citizen around them, this common everyday act for everyone else would instead be considered as a breach of lifetime probation and a crime against the law ? metro.co.uk/2024/04/16/uks-proposed-gen-alpha-smoking-ban....
May 19, 2024, CBC Power & Politics - The notion that, "Smokers are creating long line ups at the Emergency" WHA-A-T ?? Most smokers I know are out there working hard and earning a living - not sitting around on chairs in Emergency Rooms waiting 8 hours to see a Doctor ?
Listen as Dr. Heather Morrison, P.E.I.'s Chief Public Health Officer has blamed smoking for the current problems in her troubled health care system and for the long wait times at Emergency ? She goes on to suggest that in order to contain this threat that a drastic solution is necessary and is suggesting that constitutional rights and freedoms guaranteed under a Constitution be removed from some citizens for the rest of their lives in order to protect PEI citizens ?
It is unfortunate here, that the Minister seems oblivious to and never mentions in the interview the real reasons for the current health care crisis that has not so much been caused by smokers but by an incredible lack of planning and foresight by her predecessors who had for years cut staff and slashed hospital budgets to the bone. There is also a surprisingly large influx of newcomers and foreigners incl students now moving unimpeded by Government into a small and unprepared Province creating shortages of Doctors and Nurses. And, what about the huge drain on the health system caused by the abuse of alcohol, social media abuse, gambling addictions, cannabis abuse, opioid and fentanyl hard drug use, mental illness and depression. And we mustn't forget all of those suffering from obesity, sugar diabetes, poor diet choices, lack of exercise and from the effects of overdoing fast food and junk food. There is also the victims of violence, be it domestic or other, and the increase in accidents caused by pot and alcohol impairment. And, we must also remember the ever growing number of elderly residents in our society needing attention and now living longer. And not to forget the hundreds of everyday visitors to the hospital suffering from the common everyday illnesses like colds, flu, cuts and bruises and Covi, as well as all of the soon to be Mothers requiring immediate attention or treatment ?
Newfoundland, June 3, 2024 - A proposal has been put forth to Newfoundlanders that as a way to get rid of a product that some people in Newfoundland don't approve of, that the Provincial Government be given permission to interrupt and override the current system of democracy and to deny longtime constitutional rights and freedoms guaranteed under a Charter to certain young Newfoundlanders without gaining their knowledge, attention, permission or consent ? Apparently under the new proposal the local Governance will be allowed to choose and pinpoint a particular publicly sold product and then force an absolute lifetime ban on this product on whomever they have chosen ? A lifetime probationary condition is to then remain permanently attached to these subjects for as long as they live ? To insure compliance to this lifetime of social control, these individuals will be tracked by personal monitoring systems that could in the future involve the use of ankle, bracelet or necklace monitoring devices working in tandem with Tobacconist cash registers, or could perhaps involve the use of an implanted sub-epidermal computer chip that has been programmed to track personal SIN numbers, birth dates and probationary status and capable of recording and instantly alerting authorities if the targeted subject ever breaks the law by violating his or her lifetime probationary status ?
It will always be a major concern when the installation of any such major, groundbreaking, first ever of its kind, freedom removing, undemocratic or totalitarian legislation may be being based on the opinions of heavily biased individuals, unproven facts, and made-up figures that are mostly hypothetical, over-exaggerated, out dated, and might even have been deliberately manipulated ? www.ctvnews.ca/canada/n-l-becomes-latest-province-to-eye-...
Cherry fruit (known in Japanese as sakuranbo) comes from another species of tree.
The most popular variety of sakura in Japan is the Somei Yoshino. Its flowers are nearly pure white, tinged with the palest pink, especially near the stem. They bloom and usually fall within a week, before the leaves come out. Therefore, the trees look nearly white from top to bottom. The variety takes its name from the village of Somei (now part of Toshima in Tokyo). It was developed in the mid- to late-19th century at the end of the Edo period and the beginning of the Meiji period. The Somei Yoshino is so widely associated with cherry blossoms that jidaigeki and other works of fiction often depict the variety in the Edo period or earlier; such depictions are anachronisms.
Winter sakura (fuyuzakura/Prunus subhirtella autumnalis) begins to bloom in the fall and continues blooming sporadically throughout the winter. It is said to be a cross between Tokyo Higan cherry (edohiganzakura/P. incisa) and Mamezakura/P. pendula. [10]
Other categories include yamazakura, yaezakura, and shidarezakura. The yaezakura have large flowers, thick with rich pink petals. The shidarezakura, or weeping cherry, has branches that fall like those of a weeping willow, bearing cascades of pink flowers.
El municipio de Oporto tiene 15 freguesías (equivalentes a parroquias o barrios). Limita al norte con Matosinhos y Maia, al este con Gondomar, al sur con el río Duero y Vila Nova de Gaia, y al oeste con el Atlántico.
Como muchas ciudades europeas, Oporto es una ciudad antigua que cuenta con un amplio patrimonio histórico, aunque durante las últimas décadas ha sido sometida a una amplia modernización. Cuenta con el metro más largo de Portugal que cubre no sólo el Centro, sino también zonas de su área metropolitana como Senhora da Hora o Maia. Asimismo, el aeropuerto internacional Sá Carneiro ha sido recientemente ampliado hasta alcanzar una capacidad de 16 millones de pasajeros anuales.
Desde muy antiguo hay una pugna entre Lisboa y Oporto. Dicen que esta ciudad tiene un cierto aire británico, desde que se asentaron aquí los comerciantes de vino ingleses. Se dice que Lisboa gasta, Coimbra estudia, Braga reza y Oporto trabaja.
Su centro histórico ha sido declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco. Otros atractivos turístico-culturales son la Torre de los Clérigos, realizada por Nicolau Nasoni, la Casa de la Música y la Fundación Serralves dedicada al arte contemporáneo, y que es el museo más visitado de Portugal. En el margen sur del río Duero se encuentran las famosas bodegas de vinos aunque de ese margen del río ya no es Oporto sino Vilanova de Gaia. Dista de la frontera española (Galicia) unos 140 km que pueden recorrerse por autopista.
Tanto el país como el vino de Oporto (Vinho do Porto), u Oporto a secas, deben sus nombres a la ciudad de Oporto, que a su vez significa "puerto". Por su pujanza cultural, demográfica e industrial es considerada como la "Capital del Norte" portugués.
Cairo's equivalent of the Moscow Kremlin, the Citadel was home to the city's rulers for some 700 years. Built by Saladin in 1176, the fortified complex is divided into three vast enclosures, containing mosques, museums, battlements and residential buildings, dating from the 12th to the 19th centuries. This photograph shows part of the qibla (wall indicating the direction of Mecca) of the prayer hall of the Mosque of Sultan al-Nasr, built between 1318 and 1335; it was the only Mamluke building inside the Citadel left standing by Mohammed Ali.
Having seen the diesel equivalent the previous week, I had to search-out class 9F 62220 "Evening Star" - although she is not well sited being surrounded by various bit of electronic "clutter" (and I had a long wait for the "gawpers" to move).
Would be nice to see this out again a taking-on the S&C once more.
More than 300 graduates, family members and faculty celebrated during the High School Equivalency (HSE) Commencement Ceremony held Saturday, Oct. 22, on College of DuPage’s Glen Ellyn campus. The ceremony honored students who received their HSE certificates over the past three years and overcame the obstacles faced during the COVID-19 pandemic
Made of the fabric equivalent of about three shirts, this hat is heavy. It has a very substantial feeling, more like a "winter helmet." It was certainly warm on this snowy morning, and the elastic fabric "hugs" your head. Also, the thick, squishy feel of the material makes one feel insulated from the world.
I like the very homemade look of this hat, plus the array of lovely, deep colors of pine, blue, carmine, and a mixed plaid. It's machine washable of course, and will probably last for a long time.
Borie est l’équivalent français du provençal bori désignant un mas et vient du médiéval boveria, boria, étable à bœufs. On l’emploie sans distinction au féminin ou au masculin.
Ce hameau dit « Les Cabanes », avant d’être baptisé Village des bories, est situé à 4km de Gordes, à 270m d‘altitude.
Dépourvu de cimetière et d’église, ce hameau est typique de l’habitat temporaire qui, dans les pays méditerranéens, venait doubler le village permanent et était lié aux travaux agricoles saisonniers.
Son apparition résulte des grands mouvements de conquête des terres qu’à connus la Provence aux 17ème et 18ème siècles. La ruée sur les collines autour de Gordes est à l’origine des milliers de tonnes de pierres extraites du sol lors de la fabrication des champs qui donneront naissance aux différents groupes de cabanes que l’on retrouve sur ce plateau calcaire.Les parcelles défrichées étaient plantées de cultures « sèches » : muriers, amandiers, céréales, fourrage mais surtout oliviers. Tout près d’ici des moulins à huile d’une taille considérable nous renseignent sur l’activité phare de Gordes jusqu’au grand gel de 1956 : la production d’huile.
Les activités complémentaires étaient nombreuses et permettaient une valorisation de la main-d’œuvre familiale : élevage de petit bétail, miel, jardins, vergers, ramassage de plantes aromatiques, médicinales, cueillettes sauvages, boisillage, cavage de truffes, élevage du ver à soie…
Les maigres revenus tirés de l’exploitation de ces terres arides étaient pour les paysans un moyen d’échapper à la faim et au manque de grains qui souvent les menaçaient.
Les principaux bâtisseurs sont de modestes paysans, des cultivateurs, et des bergers qui ont pratiqué l’auto construction avec la pierre qu’ils trouvaient in situ.
Les cabanes les plus grandes, d’une belle plasticité, et à l’architecture élaborée sont l’œuvre de professionnels, de maçons dont le nom est perdu mais qui étaient de véritables «maîtres» de la pierre sèche et qui nous ont laissé de magnifiques ouvrages.
L’expression « maçonnerie à pierre sèche » signifie la pose de pierres choisies et taillées sans recourir à du ciment ou autre liant : chaux ou terre.
Cette technique atteint un degré de perfection lors de la construction des cabanes et notamment de la voute en encorbellement, phase la plus délicate de l’assemblage des pierres.
La voute en encorbellement ne nécessite pas de coffrage. Les pierres sont disposées horizontalement ou même légèrement penchées vers l’extérieur pour empêcher les rentrées d’eau. Chaque rangée est en surplomb par rapport à la rangée inférieure. Les pierres sont soigneusement croisées et les rangs deviennent solidaires les uns des autres. Pour terminer la cabane on place au faitage de grosses dalles plates qui assurent la stabilité de la voute.
Les voutes en carène caractéristiques des cabanes de Gordes sont les plus délicates à élever.
