Swissair Flight 111 (SR111, SWR111) was a Swissair McDonnell Douglas MD-11 on a scheduled airline flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, United States to Cointrin International Airport in Geneva, Switzerland. This flight was also a codeshare flight with Delta Air Lines.
On Wednesday, 2 September 1998, the aircraft used for the flight, registered HB-IWF, crashed into the Atlantic Ocean southwest of Halifax International Airport at the entrance to St. Margarets Bay, Nova Scotia. The crash site was 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) from shore, roughly equidistant from the tiny fishing and tourist communities of Peggys Cove and Bayswater. All 229 people on board died—the highest death toll of any aviation accident involving a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 and the second-highest of any air disaster to occur in Canada, after Arrow Air Flight 1285. This is one of only two hull losses of the passenger configured MD-11, along with China Airlines Flight 642.
The initial search and rescue response, crash recovery operation, and resulting investigation by the Government of Canada took over four years and cost CAD 57 million (at that time approximately US$38 million). The Transportation Safety Board of Canada's (TSB) official report of their investigation stated that flammable material used in the aircraft's structure allowed a fire to spread beyond the control of the crew, resulting in a loss of control and the crash of the aircraft.
Swissair Flight 111 was known as the "UN shuttle" due to its popularity with United Nations officials; the flight often carried business executives, scientists, and researchers

One wonders what the Captain was considering as he chugged slowly down river with his sights set firmly on the offing?
If it were me, I’d be expending far too much energy trying to make sure that I was equidistant between the banks as I passed out of the harbour. At the same time, I might also be trying to work out how much to drop the engine revs by in order to balance the incoming tide, the outflowing river and the forward motion of the boat, such that we might come to a virtual standstill.
And, if a virtual standstill were to be achieved, I imagine that I’d be grinning from ear to ear for the rest of the day.
I strongly suspect that the Captain wasn’t thinking about either of those things.

Santa Pau es una villa y municipio de la comarca de la Garrotxa.
Esta en el sureste de la llanura de Olot, en plena zona volcánica, en medio del valle entre las cordilleras de Sant Julià del Mont i Serra de Finestres y a 496 m sobre el nivel del mar. Cuenta con una única vía de comunicación: la carretera de Olot a Banyoles, y se encuentra a una distancia de 150 km de Barcelona, a 50 Km de Girona y a 9 km de Olot.
En línea recta equidista a 45 Km de la Bahía de Roses y del pico del Canigó, y tanto el uno como el otro son visibles en días claros desde diversos lugares del término municipal. Esto da un carácter mixto de prepirineo y prelitoral a su climatología y por tanto también al tipo de vegetación.
El 81% del territorio municipal forma parte del Parque Natural de la Zona Volcánica de la Garrotxa, y dentro este lugar hay puntos de interés especial como el Volcán de Santa Margarita, el volcán Croscat y los gredales volcánicas, la Fageda d'en Jordà o el salto de agua de Can Batlle.

It is in the southeast of the Olot plain, in the middle of the volcanic area, in the middle of the valley between the Sant Julià del Mont i Serra de Finestres mountain ranges and 496 m above sea level. It has a single communication route: the road from Olot to Banyoles, and it is located at a distance of 150 km from Barcelona, 50 km from Girona and 9 km from Olot.
In an equidistant straight line 45 km from the Bay of Roses and the Canigó peak, and both are visible on clear days from various places in the municipality. This gives a mixed pre-Pyrenean and pre-coastal character to its climate and therefore also to the type of vegetation.

The remote Lighthouse of Ponta do Albernaz sits atop a cliff on the Northwest tip of the Island of Flores in the Azores. A lighthouse was first planned for the settlement of Ponta Delgada on the east coast in 1883. It was never built when in 1902 a commission on lighthouse postponed the plans in order to modernize the design and study the best location for a lighthouse. They came up with a controversial and unexpected proposal: Build a first-order light, with an equidistant beacon providing rotation at 5 second intervals on the promontory of Ponta do Albernaz about 3 kilometers (1.9 mi) away from the settlement of Ponta Delgada. That elevated position along the western coast would allow visibility as approached from the west, to the east in Corvo as well as the entire northwest / north coast of Flores.
In what was reported to be a friendly transaction, 5,525 square kilometres (2,133 sq mi) of pastureland was expropriated (at the cost of $3.500 reis) from property-owner João Lourenço in 1922. Construction commenced soon afterward. That construction, however, was a challenge as there was no access to the site by road from Ponta Delgada or any other location on Flores.The plans were adapted to the realities of the situation and the lighthouse was equipped with a third-order dioptoric beacon with a 500 millimetres (20 in) focal length. Moved by a clockwork turntable, the light had a range of 28 miles (45 km) range and was powered by a diesel generator. The lighthouse commenced operation on 28 January 1925, and utilized a lamp powered by a diesel generator.
Many modification have been made since it first started operation. In 1938, the light was converted to incandescent light which allowed the beacon to extend its range to 35 miles (56 km). In 1956, generating cells and a 3000watt/110 volt lamp were installed. In 1960, the site finally became connected to a telephone network. Later other improvement were made including expanding the lighthouse, and finally in 1983 replacing the light with a 1000 Watt/120 Volt halogen lamp.
Today, this is the only lighthouse in Portugal not linked to the national electrical network. Yes, a remote lighthouse.

For centuries, La Plaza Mayor has been the meeting point, the center of the city's social and commercial life. The square was born on a site equidistant from the two main population centers outside the city walls in the fourteenth century: the houses around the church of Santiago and the houses around the Coria gate. At that time, this slightly sloping rectangular esplanade was the ideal place to hold fairs, markets and recreational events. Thus, the center of the city goes from being the esplanade attached to the church of Santa María to occupy this place, which, over the years, will become the main or main square of the city.

In 1956, José M. Bosch, President of Ron Bacardí y Compañía approached Mies to commission the design of a new office space. He was particularly interested in a very open plan, and the relatively simple idea Mies came up with involved a square roof plate supported on each side by two columns. Though initial structural challenges had to be dealt with, the resulting pavilion typology became integral to Mies' architectural lexicon, in many ways the epitome of his universal conception of space.
The Bacardí Building was abandoned in September 1960 due to general political unrest in Cuba, but at the same time, two other museum commissions were brought to Mies' office. Georg Schaefer, a wealthy industrialist living in Schweinfurt approached Mies about the construction of a museum for his nineteenth-century art collection during the summer of 1960. A modest initial plan was drawn for the structure, but later that year Mies decided to reconfigure the unbuilt Bacardí project to fit Schaefer's program as he wished to see it built. Consequently, a scaled-down model of the Bacardí project this time rendered in steel rather than concrete was created. In March 1961, Mies also received a letter from the Senator for Building and Housing in Berlin, inviting him to build what was to be called the Neue Nationalgalerie, an exhibition space for the state's collection of early twentieth-century art. The two museum projects, though slightly different in scale, where to be essentially identical in form, both a version in steel of the original Barcardí design. Though the Schweinfurt project never came to fruition, the reductive exercise of continual reconfiguration allowed for the perfection of Mies' expression in Berlin, and the Neue Nationalgalerie remains as the sole built form of the initial tripartite conception.[5]
Aesthetic importance
Much of Mies' syntactical development throughout the three building progression leading up to the Neue Nationalgalerie was prefigured in an earlier project for a Museum for a Small City. This project was published in a special May 1943 edition of Architectural Forum. In his publication, Mies describes a seemingly floating roof plane, suspended above a single clear-span space punctuated by equidistant columns. This project is now seen as a significant move on Mies' part toward the alleviation of interior space by both defining and minimizing structural enclosure, thus joining exterior and interior space in a meaningful way. The structure itself, a composite of little more than ground plane, support and roof, thus becomes the building. The aesthetic importance of the clear-span was directly related to Mies' conception of museum space in general, a "defining, rather than confining space".[6] The completely open nature of the plan also serves to eliminate the barrier between art and community, simultaneously breaking down the reverence enacted by severely partitioned spaces and inviting interaction between viewer and art.[6] The overall aesthetic affect is thus one of vitalizing liberation.[7] This infinitely transformative capability and universality is also seen in Mies' buildings from the intervening years, namely the Farnsworth House in Plano, Illinois, and Crown Hall of the Illinois Institute of Technology campus. Various commentators have recognized the structure's ties to classical building, seeing it as a modern temple whose monumental simplicity evinces the immense skill behind its design and conception.[8]

Having had no thorough modernization since its inauguration, the Neue Nationalgalerie required upgrades to its air-conditioning, lighting, security, accessibility, visitor facilities and the behind-the-scenes infrastructure for moving art.[13] In 2012 it was announced that British architect David Chipperfield would oversee a major renovation of the building. In a non-competitive selection process common for public contracts in Germany, his firm was chosen for the contract out of 24 architectural firms based on a two-stage negotiation process.
Originally planned for €101 million,[14] the €140 million[15] renovation project started in 2015 and was originally expected to last three years, during which time the museum was closed.[16] Original building elements, such as handrails and shelves, were removed, restored and reinstalled in their previous locations. Archival material dating from the construction at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, helped the architects remain true to Mies's design.[17] Meanwhile, the structural framework of the roof, which rests on eight steel beams, and the glass facade was restored.[18]

For me, this one is fantasyland. I suppose everybody will see something different in it, and I don't want to curtail that, so I'll just call it "Ice" and leave the rest ambiguous.
There's no trickery here. I used a tripod and macro lens, aimed straight down at the frozen surface of Rock Creek. It's the time-honoured and easy technique of parallel plane focusing: get the plane of the subject parallel to the plane of the camera's sensor, so that everything in the frame is equidistant from the sensor; then stop the lens down to provide enough depth of field to render all of it sharp if your angle is slightly off. Voila!

Santa Pau es una villa y municipio de la comarca de la Garrotxa.
Esta en el sureste de la llanura de Olot, en plena zona volcánica, en medio del valle entre las cordilleras de Sant Julià del Mont i Serra de Finestres y a 496 m sobre el nivel del mar. Cuenta con una única vía de comunicación: la carretera de Olot a Banyoles, y se encuentra a una distancia de 150 km de Barcelona, a 50 Km de Girona y a 9 km de Olot.
En línea recta equidista a 45 Km de la Bahía de Roses y del pico del Canigó, y tanto el uno como el otro son visibles en días claros desde diversos lugares del término municipal. Esto da un carácter mixto de prepirineo y prelitoral a su climatología y por tanto también al tipo de vegetación.
El 81% del territorio municipal forma parte del Parque Natural de la Zona Volcánica de la Garrotxa, y dentro este lugar hay puntos de interés especial como el Volcán de Santa Margarita, el volcán Croscat y los gredales volcánicas, la Fageda d'en Jordà o el salto de agua de Can Batlle.

It is in the southeast of the Olot plain, in the middle of the volcanic area, in the middle of the valley between the Sant Julià del Mont i Serra de Finestres mountain ranges and 496 m above sea level. It has a single communication route: the road from Olot to Banyoles, and it is located at a distance of 150 km from Barcelona, 50 km from Girona and 9 km from Olot.
In an equidistant straight line 45 km from the Bay of Roses and the Canigó peak, and both are visible on clear days from various places in the municipality. This gives a mixed pre-Pyrenean and pre-coastal character to its climate and therefore also to the type of vegetation.
81% of the municipal territory is part of the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park, and within this place there are points of special interest such as the Santa Margarita Volcano, the Croscat volcano and the volcanic gredales, the Fageda d'en Jordà or the waterfall of Can Batlle.

Cool weather mid July 2020, with coffee break in the Peak District National Park equidistant from Buxton, Derbyshire and Macclesfield, Cheshire, which are both market towns in the area 10 miles apart over Hill Farms, Forest and Moorland.
I've decided to upload all my Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown photos in three large batches. In order to do this, I'm spending a few days on the post-processing (generally cropping, straightening and sharpening). Since I won't be up to comment to any great extent until Tuesday, please don't feel obligated to comment on my stream. It wouldn't be fair to expect your comments.
I'm uploading batches for a couple of reasons. First, Explores are nice, but my main reason for being on flickr is to set up an archives for my extensive families, my personal friends and anyone else who wants to use my submissions. I've got a lot of old family stuff on my photostream, and there's going to be a lot more old stuff going up over the next few months. Secondly, I want to keep putting up current stuff. Only then can I see how I'm progressing. In order to put up new stuff, I've got to clear out the old stuff.
Flickr is a great tool that can be used for a lot more than getting Explores, although I have to admit that I'll be the last guy to turn them down.

In 1616, the Rolfes made a public relations trip to England, where Pocahontas was received as visiting royalty. Changes by the Virginia Company which became effective in 1619 attracted additional investments, also sowing the first seeds of democracy in the process with a locally-elected body which became the House of Burgesses, the first such representative legislative body in the New World.

Several times during emergencies, the seat of government for the colony was shifted temporarily to nearby Middle Plantation, a fortified location on the high ridge approximately equidistant from the James and York Rivers on the Virginia Peninsula. Shortly after the Colony was finally granted a long-desired charter and established the new College of William and Mary at Middle Plantation, the capital of the Colony was permanently relocated nearby. In 1699, the new capital town was renamed Williamsburg, in honor of the current British king, William III.
After the capital was relocated, Jamestown began a gradual loss of prominence and eventually reverted to a few large farms. It again became a significant point for control of the James River during the American Civil War (1861–1865), and then slid back into seeming oblivion. Even the Jamestown Exposition of 1907 was held elsewhere, at a more accessible location at Sewell's Point, on Hampton Roads near Norfolk.

The two major attractions at Jamestown are separate, but complementary to each other. The state-sponsored Jamestown Settlement near the entrance to Jamestown Island includes a recreated English Fort and Native American Village, extensive indoor and outdoor displays, and features the three popular replica ships. On Jamestown Island itself, the National Park Service operates Historic Jamestowne. Over a million artifacts have been recovered by the Jamestown Rediscovery project with ongoing archaeological work, including a number of exciting recent discoveries.
Early in the 21st century, in preparation for the Jamestown 2007 event commemorating America's 400th Anniversary, new accommodations, transportation facilities and attractions were planned. The celebration began in the Spring of 2006 with the sailing of a new replica Godspeed to six major East Coast U.S. cities, where several hundred thousand people viewed it. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip joined America's festivities on an official state visit to Jamestown in May 2007.

Peggys Point Lighthouse (also known as Peggy's Cove Lighthouse) is in Peggys Cove and is an iconic Canadian image. It is one of the busiest tourist attractions in Nova Scotia and is a prime attraction on the Lighthouse Trail scenic drive. The lighthouse marks the eastern entrance of St. Margarets Bay and is officially known as the Peggys Point Lighthouse.
Peggys Cove is a classic red-and-white lighthouse still operated by the Canadian Coast Guard. The light station is situated on an extensive granite outcrop at Peggys Point, immediately south of the village and its cove. This lighthouse is one of the most-photographed structures in Atlantic Canada and one of the most recognizable lighthouses in the world.
Visitors may explore the granite outcrop on Peggys Point around the lighthouse; despite numerous signs warning of unpredictable surf (including one on a bronze plaque on the lighthouse itself), several visitors each year are swept off the rocks by waves, sometimes drowning.
Peggys Cove is 43 kilometers (26 miles) southwest of downtown Halifax and comprises one of the numerous small fishing communities located around the perimeter of the Chebucto Peninsula. Swissair Flight 111 (SR111, SWR111) was a Swissair McDonnell Douglas MD-11 on a scheduled airline flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, United States to Cointrin International Airport in Geneva, Switzerland. This flight was also a codeshare flight with Delta Air Lines.
On Wednesday, 2 September 1998, the aircraft used for the flight, registered HB-IWF, crashed into the Atlantic Ocean southwest of Halifax International Airport at the entrance to St. Margarets Bay, Nova Scotia. The crash site was 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) from shore, roughly equidistant from the tiny fishing and tourist communities of Peggys Cove and Bayswater. All 229 people on board died—the highest death toll of any aviation accident involving a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 and the second-highest of any air disaster to occur in Canada, after Arrow Air Flight 1285. This is one of only two hull losses of the passenger configured MD-11, along with China Airlines Flight 642.

Olite (en euskera, de manera cooficial, Erriberri) es un municipio y una ciudad española de la Comunidad Foral Navarra. Dista unos 42 km de la capital de la comunidad, Pamplona, unos 51 km de Tudela, unos 40 km de Sangüesa y unos 46 km de Estella. Tafalla está a solo 7 km. Es la cabeza de la merindad del mismo nombre, que corresponde con el mismo territorio del Partido judicial de Tafalla, por lo que, en conjunto, hace de Olite la capital de merindad más equidistante de todas las demás. Su población en 2017 fue de 3927 habitantes.

Description: I'm actually quite amazed that this is the first time this year that I've used a couple of Arum Lilies as foreground interest! The reason why I'm amazed is because at this time of the year there must be a gazillion of these things growing all over the Durbanville farmlands... so many, that it's often quite difficult to compose a shot without any Arum Lilies in the frame! :)
Tip: I've discovered that often the most pleasing compositions are those where all the main objects in your frame are roughly equidistant from each other.

THE HILLS OF PROSECCO
In 2019 the Prosecco Hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This unique and wonderful landscape, in the province of Treviso, extends for 181 square kilometers between vineyard slopes and villages of the Sinistra Piave, between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene.
The official description of Unesco states that "the area includes a series of hill ranges, which run from east to west, and which follow one after the other from the plains to the Prealps, equidistant from the Dolomites and the Adriatic. , which has a positive effect on the climate and the countryside. While Conegliano is home to many institutes related to wine, Valdobbiadene is the productive heart of the wine area. The steep slopes of the hills make it difficult to mechanize the work and consequently the management of the vineyards it has always been in the hands of small producers

Olite (en euskera, de manera cooficial, Erriberri) es un municipio y una ciudad española de la Comunidad Foral Navarra. Dista unos 42 km de la capital de la comunidad, Pamplona, unos 51 km de Tudela, unos 40 km de Sangüesa y unos 46 km de Estella. Tafalla está a solo 7 km. Visitors may explore the granite outcrop on Peggys Point around the lighthouse; despite numerous signs warning of unpredictable surf (including one on a bronze plaque on the lighthouse itself), several visitors each year are swept off the rocks by waves, sometimes drowning.

On Wednesday, 2 September 1998, the aircraft used for the flight, registered HB-IWF, crashed into the Atlantic Ocean southwest of Halifax International Airport at the entrance to St. Margarets Bay, Nova Scotia. The crash site was 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) from shore, roughly equidistant from the tiny fishing and tourist communities of Peggys Cove and Bayswater. All 229 people on board died—the highest death toll of any aviation accident involving a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 and the second-highest of any air disaster to occur in Canada, after Arrow Air Flight 1285. This is one of only two hull losses of the passenger configured MD-11, along with China Airlines Flight 642.
The initial search and rescue response, crash recovery operation, and resulting investigation by the Government of Canada took over four years and cost CAD 57 million (at that time approximately US$38 million). The Transportation Safety Board of Canada's (TSB) official report of their investigation stated that flammable material used in the aircraft's structure allowed a fire to spread beyond the control of the crew, resulting in a loss of control and the crash of the aircraft.

On Wednesday, 2 September 1998, the aircraft used for the flight, registered HB-IWF, crashed into the Atlantic Ocean southwest of Halifax International Airport at the entrance to St. Margarets Bay, Nova Scotia. The crash site was 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) from shore, roughly equidistant from the tiny fishing and tourist communities of Peggys Cove and Bayswater. All 229 people on board died—the highest death toll of any aviation accident involving a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 and the second-highest of any air disaster to occur in Canada, after Arrow Air Flight 1285. This is one of only two hull losses of the passenger configured MD-11, along with China Airlines Flight 642.
The initial search and rescue response, crash recovery operation, and resulting investigation by the Government of Canada took over four years and cost CAD 57 million (at that time approximately US$38 million). The Transportation Safety Board of Canada's (TSB) official report of their investigation stated that flammable material used in the aircraft's structure allowed a fire to spread beyond the control of the crew, resulting in a loss of control and the crash of the aircraft.
