This wheatear was very shy and alert when I tried to photograph him. This was probably the reason the Siberian Chiffchaff hung around him - he always got warned when anything got too close. I observed the Chiffchaff changing places with the wheatear a few times before I had to leave that morning.

Part of our systematic migratory bird count in a vast desert landscape is that the counting teams cover multiple places in the desert, using equidistant observation points all laid out on an east-to-west line, this way covering around 20km of sky for 3-4 hours. We counted on four such locations, changing places every day. This picture was taken during our time off, in the morning before we had to get into the car and drive off-road for few hours.

The equator of a rotating spheroid (such as a planet) is the parallel (circle of latitude) at which latitude is defined to be 0°. It is the imaginary line on the spheroid, equidistant from its poles, dividing it into northern and southern hemispheres. In other words, it is the intersection of the spheroid with the plane perpendicular to its axis of rotation and midway between its geographical poles.

On Earth, the equator is about 40,075 km (24,901 mi) long, of which 78.8% lies across water and 21.3% over land. Indonesia is the country straddling the greatest length of the equatorial line across both land and sea.

Swissair Flight 111 was a scheduled international passenger flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, United States, to Cointrin International Airport in Geneva, Switzerland. This flight was also a codeshare flight with Delta Air Lines. On 2 September 1998, the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 performing this flight, registration HB-IWF, crashed into the Atlantic Ocean southwest of Halifax International Airport at the entrance to St. Margarets Bay, Nova Scotia. The crash site was 8 kilometres (5 mi; 4 nmi) from shore, roughly equidistant from the tiny fishing and tourist communities of Peggy's Cove and Bayswater. All 229 passengers and crew on board the MD-11 were killed, making the crash the deadliest McDonnell Douglas MD-11 accident in aviation history.

Great Glemham is an attractive Suffolk village situated a mile or two to the west of the busy A12 and roughly equidistant between Framlingham and Saxmundham. The parish takes the shape of an irregular triangle formed by two clay ridges flanking the channel of a seasonal watercourse, the Gull, flowing NW to SE to join the upper River Alde which forms its eastern boundary. The heart of the village is centred around a staggered cross roads and contains some fifty dwellings as well as the fine 14C All Saints Church, the Crown Inn, our very own pristine K6 Telephone Box

Anchorage (officially called the Municipality of Anchorage) (Dena'ina Athabascan: Dgheyaytnu) is a unified home rule municipality in the U.S. state of Alaska. With an estimated 298,192 residents in 2016, it is Alaska's most populous city and contains more than 40 percent of the state's total population; among the 50 states, only New York has a higher percentage of residents who live in its most populous city. All together, the Anchorage metropolitan area, which combines Anchorage with the neighboring Matanuska-Susitna Borough, had a population of 401,635 in 2016, which accounts for more than half of the state's population.

Anchorage is located in the south-central portion of Alaska, at the terminus of the Cook Inlet, on a peninsula formed by the Knik Arm to the north and the Turnagain Arm to the south. The city limits span 1,961.1 square miles (5,079.2 km2) which encompass the urban core, a joint military base, several outlying communities and almost all of Chugach State Park.

Due to its location, almost equidistant from New York City, Frankfurt, and Tokyo, Anchorage lies within 9 1⁄2 hours by air of nearly 90% of the industrialized world. For this reason, the Anchorage International Airport is a common refueling stop for many international cargo flights and is home to a major FedEx hub, which the company calls a "critical part" of its global network of services.

Anchorage has won the All-America City Award four times: in 1956, 1965, 1984–85, and 2002, by the National Civic League. It has also been named by Kiplinger as the most tax-friendly city in the United States.

Boundaries of the Soul: Part 2

Problem:

In the concrete canyons of a large city, the human soul still craves contact with nature.

Solution:

Plant a stand of trees down the sidewalk

Like exclamation points

Springing from the concrete

Thin things

Protruding through holes in cement

Equidistant from each other.

See how the landscaper

Ingeniously

Has split each square of sidewalk

By two diagonals

Into four perfect triangles

And cleanly sliced an arc

From the center point of each

Leaving

A circle

Just large enough to contain

A slender trunk

As if to say, “This is how much you are allowed to grow. No more.”

A mud puddle with a thin crust of ice, a few stones... it doesn't take much to make me happy.

A flat surface such as this is easy to photograph well by lining up its plane with the plane of the camera sensor, ie. parallel plane focusing. That way everything within the frame will be about equidistant from the sensor and there won't be any sharpness falloff. To make sure of this, stop down the aperture to increase depth of field, which is shallow at close range. Use a tripod, which will allow a slow shutter and low ISO under any circumstances. I also like to lock up the mirror before exposure, using a cable release, to eliminate vibrations from mirror slap.

I've raised a few eyebrows by shooting at f/22, f/32, even f/36, because diffraction does reduce sharpness at apertures smaller than f/16 (approximately). However, I think that using teleconverters - which I often do when shooting macro - can be a bigger factor in loss of sharpness. I don't worry about any of this if my photos pass the eye test, both at low resolution (72 ppi, for monitor viewing) and hi-res (300 ppi, for printing).

After all this, I have to admit that I'm one of those people who, if handed lined paper, will write sideways. Never let rules of any sort get in the way of photography, which above all should be fun. I remember a photo class during which I sensed my students were starting to feel overwhelmed by technical "requirements", so I had them all remove the cameras from their tripods and take a bunch of shots with slow shutter speeds while jumping up and down. That loosened everyone up. I love hitting that zone where work and play merge into one.

Peggys Point Lighthouse (also known as Peggy's Cove Lighthouse) is in Peggys Cove and is an iconic Canadian image. It is one of the busiest tourist attractions in Nova Scotia and is a prime attraction on the Lighthouse Trail scenic drive. The lighthouse marks the eastern entrance of St. Margarets Bay and is officially known as the Peggys Point Lighthouse.

Peggys Cove is a classic red-and-white lighthouse still operated by the Canadian Coast Guard. The light station is situated on an extensive granite outcrop at Peggys Point, immediately south of the village and its cove. This lighthouse is one of the most-photographed structures in Atlantic Canada and one of the most recognizable lighthouses in the world.

Visitors may explore the granite outcrop on Peggys Point around the lighthouse; despite numerous signs warning of unpredictable surf (including one on a bronze plaque on the lighthouse itself), several visitors each year are swept off the rocks by waves, sometimes drowning.

Peggys Cove is 43 kilometers (26 miles) southwest of downtown Halifax and comprises one of the numerous small fishing communities located around the perimeter of the Chebucto Peninsula. The community is named after the cove of the same name, a name also shared with Peggy's Point, immediately to the east of the cove. This is one of only two hull losses of the passenger configured MD-11, along with China Airlines Flight 642.

The initial search and rescue response, crash recovery operation, and resulting investigation by the Government of Canada took over four years and cost CAD 57 million (at that time approximately US$38 million). The Transportation Safety Board of Canada's (TSB) official report of their investigation stated that flammable material used in the aircraft's structure allowed a fire to spread beyond the control of the crew, resulting in a loss of control and the crash of the aircraft.

Swissair Flight 111 was known as the "UN shuttle" due to its popularity with United Nations officials; the flight often carried business executives, scientists, and researchers

The aircraft, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11, serial number 48448 registered HB-IWF, was manufactured in 1991 and Swissair was its only operator. It bore the title of Vaud, in honor of the Swiss canton of the same name. The airframe had a total of 36,041 hours. The three engines were Pratt & Whitney 4462s. The cabin was configured with 241 seats (12 six-abreast first-, 49 seven-abreast business-, and 180 nine-abreast economy-class). First- and business-class seats were equipped with an in seat in-flight entertainment system, installed at some point after initial entry into service. (Wikipedia)

What is this, you may well ask. It is a wonder of nature, a science experiment for a boring day, a cure for cabin fever.

Instructions: Find a dandelion with a long, fat stem. Pick it. Carefully cut the bottom of the stem in two or three equidistant places. Peal the three section of the stem up or close to where they join the seed head. Put it down on a smooth surface inside the house, and forget about it. If you have found a cooperative dandelion, the strings of the stem will curl into neat little rolls all by themselves.

Sphere (ancient Greek σφαῖρα “ball, ball )is the locus of points in space equidistant from some given point (the center of the sphere).

Northamptonshire is about 70 miles north of London and equidistant between Oxford and Cambridge. We moved here 50 years ago in order to buy a house and be able to commute daily to London, where I worked in the civil service. These days, now we are retired, we live in a 17th-century cottage in a pretty little village and spend about half our time up in the north-west near the Cumbria border. But it's always a pleasure to come back and see what attracted us to Northamptonshire in the first place.

Ladner, BC Canada

One of the best ways to get a feeling for the Fraser Estuary is from a small boat such as a canoe or kayak. Although the Fraser River powers its way through the estuary in three main channels, there are numerous backwaters where the current is not as strong nor the wakes from passing tugboats and freighters as intimidating. Try launching at Deas Slough and explore the nearby Ladner Marsh area.

The heart of the slough is equidistant from either Ferry Road or Deas Island Park. If you want to expand your journey beyond the slough, investigate the secluded channels of Ladner Marsh and the South Arm Marshes Wildlife Management Area that begins west of the Ferry Road boat launch and includes all of the delta between Deas and Westham Islands.

The village marks the eastern point of St. Margaret's Bay.(Wikipedia)

Swissair Flight 111

Swissair Flight 111 (SR111, SWR111) was a Swissair McDonnell Douglas MD-11 on a scheduled airline flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, United States to Cointrin International Airport in Geneva, Switzerland. This flight was also a codeshare flight with Delta Air Lines.

On Wednesday, 2 September 1998, the aircraft used for the flight, registered HB-IWF, crashed into the Atlantic Ocean southwest of Halifax International Airport at the entrance to St. Margarets Bay, Nova Scotia. The crash site was 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) from shore, roughly equidistant from the tiny fishing and tourist communities of Peggys Cove and Bayswater. All 229 people on board died—the highest death toll of any aviation accident involving a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 and the second-highest of any air disaster to occur in Canada, after Arrow Air Flight 1285.

Aircraft

(Wikipedia)

Elmton is a linear village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Elmton with Creswell in the Bolsover district of Derbyshire, England, approximately equidistant from Bolsover Castle and Creswell Crags. In 2011 the parish had a population of 5550.[1] On 1 April 2014 the parish was abolished to form "Elmton with Creswell".[2] However the pre 2014 parish had also sometimes been called "Elmton with Creswell".[3]

History

There is evidence of human habitation in the area from the Ice Age,[4][5][6] an Iron Age fort[7] and possibly a Roman camp.[8] A Roman ring found in Elmton is on display in Chesterfield Museum and Art Gallery. The village was named Helmetune in Anglo Saxon times after the large number of elm trees that were once a major feature. By the time of the Domesday Survey in 1086 the village was a manor belonging to Walter D'Aincourt.

In 1707, Jedediah Buxton, the legendary mental calculator, was born here (a blue plaque was erected in his honour in 2011 after a public poll).[11]

Much of the village was rebuilt in the middle of the 19th century when the local estate changed ownership: the 1886/7 Ordnance Survey map shows the village soon after this period. Although there has been some redevelopment and infilling since WW2, the village remains similar in size and form to this day. Once belonging to the Dukes of Portland of Welbeck Abbey, the surrounding tenant farms today form part of the estates of Chatsworth House.

Village wells are decorated with flowers in the Derbyshire well dressing tradition in late June / early July each year. Well dressings coincide with the National Gardens Scheme (NGS) Open Gardens with several village gardens open to the public raising money for national nursing charities such as Macmillan. There is also an exhibition and cream teas are served in the Schoolroom.

Elmton has been voted Best Small Village in the East Midlands in Bloom competition in 2010, 2011, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 & 2019[13] with a Judges Award in 2011 for measures to protect the Bee Orchid.[14] The village was a finalist in the RHS Britain in Bloom competition in 2018.[15] With just 64 residents, Elmton was the smallest community in the competition; it won a silver gilt award and came 5th= out of 10 finalists in the Village category. In 2019, the village won a gold award in the RHS East Midlands in Bloom competition.

The Elm Tree Inn, Elmton was voted the Best Traditional Pub in Derbyshire at the Derbyshire Food and Drinks Awards 2011.[16]

(Wikipedia)

A couple stands outside the remote Lighthouse of Ponta do Albernaz which sits atop a cliff on the Northwest tip of the Island of Flores in the Azores. A lighthouse was first planned for the settlement of Ponta Delgada on the east coast in 1883. It was never built when in 1902 a commission on lighthouse postponed the plans in order to modernize the design and study the best location for a lighthouse. They came up with a controversial and unexpected proposal: Build a first-order light, with an equidistant beacon providing rotation at 5 second intervals on the promontory of Ponta do Albernaz about 3 kilometers (1.9 mi) away from the settlement of Ponta Delgada. That elevated position along the western coast would allow visibility as approached from the west, to the east in Corvo as well as the entire northwest / north coast of Flores.

In what was reported to be a friendly transaction, 5,525 square kilometres (2,133 sq mi) of pastureland was expropriated (at the cost of $3.500 reis) from property-owner João Lourenço in 1922. Construction commenced soon afterward. That construction, however, was a challenge as there was no access to the site by road from Ponta Delgada or any other location on Flores. The plans were adapted to the realities of the situation and the lighthouse was equipped with a third-order dioptoric beacon with a 500 millimetres (20 in) focal length. Moved by a clockwork turntable, the light had a range of 28 miles (45 km) range and was powered by a diesel generator. The lighthouse commenced operation on 28 January 1925, and utilized a lamp powered by a diesel generator.

Many modification have been made since it first started operation. In 1938, the light was converted to incandescent light which allowed the beacon to extend its range to 35 miles (56 km). In 1956, generating cells and a 3000watt/110 volt lamp were installed. In 1960, the site finally became connected to a telephone network. Later other improvement were made including expanding the lighthouse, and finally in 1983 replacing the light with a 1000 Watt/120 Volt halogen lamp.

Today, this is the only lighthouse in Portugal not linked to the national electrical network. Yes, a remote lighthouse.

Goblin Valley State Park, Utah, is about equidistant from three major Western U.S. national parks: Arches, Capitol Reef and Canyonlands, and well worth visiting on the way. It is a jumbled fantasy of the most unusual shapes and forms among which the visitor is allowed to wander freely.

Goblin Valley State Park is a showcase of geologic history. Exposed cliffs reveal parallel layers of rock bared by erosion. Because of the uneven hardness of sandstone, some patches resist erosion much better than others. The softer material is removed by wind and water, leaving thousands of unique, geologic goblins. Water erosion and the smoothing action of windblown dust work together to shape the goblins. (Source: Goblin Valley State Park website)
