The city walls of Cittadella are a rare example of medieval means of defense with a still practicable, perfectly preserved parapet walk.

It is one of the most beautiful means of defense in Europe.

The walls’ circumference is 1461 meters, its height 14 meters, the keeps reach a height of up to 30 meters. The average thickness of the walls is 2,10 meters. The four gates, 450 meters equidistant from each other, lie approximately along the four cardinal points. The surrounding walls are characterised by 4 keeps, 12 towers and 16 turrets.

What’s that I hear you say?

Don’t be so hasty.

I was facing directly South when I captured this.....

And what you see there is the actual South Pole my friends. Real life.

Looking through my powerful monocular I didn’t realise what I was seeing at first, even thinking it may be some kind of mirage.

But when I fully understood what it was and the import of it, I made sure to capture it by the medium of photography in order that y’all may see it for yourselves and know what it looks like.

I drew a line from the South Pole through the point where I was stood, and behold, directly behind me, about the same distance away is another one. I’m guessing that is the North Pole, but can’t be certain as there were trees in the way.

Not many people have seen the actual South Pole because as you can see it is pretty remote.

But there you have it! No mirage this.

You too have now seen it.

You are welcome.

One last thing I should mention -

If you are thinking of going to see it for yourself, pay no heed to all the stories and old wives tales. It was much, much warmer than they make out - all that losing fingers and toes to uncle Jack Frost, sheer rubbish. I didn’t even feel the need for a coat, let alone gloves.

That said, considering I was equidistant between the North and the South poles, it was also a lot, lot colder than it should have been and so you might want to sport a fleece, but leave the factr 8 at home.

Sigh…..climate change I suppose.

Did I say factor 8? Gosh, I’ll have the sun police on me next……

Clear skies in this central Australian city. It is the third-largest town in the Northern Territory of Australia. Now colloquially known as The Alice or simply Alice, the town is situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre. It is nearly equidistant from Adelaide and Darwin. The town straddles the usually dry Todd River on the northern side of the MacDonnell Ranges. The surrounding region is known as Central Australia, or the Red Centre, an arid environment consisting of several different deserts. Temperatures in Alice Springs can vary dramatically, with an average maximum in summer of 35.6 °C and an average minimum in winter of 5.1 °C. 16323

Poolbeg Lighthouse in Dublin Bay was built in 1768 and initially operated on candlepower (reputedly the first in the world to do so) but changed to oil in 1786. It was re-designed and re-built into its present form in 1820.

The lighthouse, one of a formation of three, is located on the Great South Wall (South Bull Wall), at the Port of Dublin, which extends from Ringsend's Poolbeg peninsula nearly four miles out into Dublin Bay. The wall was the world's longest at the time of its building, and remains one of the longest sea-walls in Europe. One of the other two lighthouses is located on the Bull Wall opposite, and the other on a wooden platform mid-channel.

The Poolbeg Lighthouse is a handsome and conspicuous feature in the bay, in which it occupies an almost central position. It is nearly equidistant from Dublin, Dún Laoghaire, and Howth, and commands extensive views of the shores of the bay, with an unbroken panorama of the mountains on the south. Howth with its heather-clad hills, its bright green fields and rugged reaches of sea cliffs, looks particularly attractive from this point.

The lighthouse when originally constructed, presented an entirely different appearance from what it does at the present time. It was not as high as the existing structure, it sloped much more rapidly towards the top, and was surmounted by an octagonal lantern with eight heavy glass windows. A stone staircase with an iron balustrade led to the second storey, where an iron gallery surrounded the whole building.

The alteration to the present form was made in the early part of the nineteenth century.

If you want to keep out trespassers, it might be advantageous to put up two fences. Here we have an iron fence which looks old but still quite sturdy. In front of that we have a wooden fence attached to stone columns. This wooden fence needs some repair. There are other stone columns on the fenceline but they don’t seem to be equidistant from each other and they don’t all have wooden slats attached.

I’d say the message here is, “We wanted to keep you out years ago, but now we just don’t care.” HFF

Portholland is made up of two small hamlets, East and West Portholland. The little village is home to a total of about forty permanent residents. Located on two coves, Portholland and all the properties therein is owned by the Caerhayes Castle Estate, the past home of the Trevanion family which had been in the area for centuries. The estate was sold in 1860 to one of the established families in the area, the Williams’. The new owners did their best to keep the area a working farm-centred community that was away from the modern life and its haste. Caerhays Castle can be found in a sheltered valley that overlooks Porthluney Cove on the South Cornish Coast and not far from Truro and St Austell. Portholland, East and West, has been declared a National heritage Asset. The areas around Portholland are virtually unchanged for well over one hundred years and this is part of what attracts the tourists from around the world that go there. This hamlet of Portholland, where time seems to have stood still, is very different when compared with the developments in housing that continue to take place in many of the other similar fishing vilages that litter the South coast of Cornwall. At high tide, Portholland has two separate coves but when the tide is low these coves are joined together by golden sand. Portholland beach can be reached by simply walking the almost half a mile when you use the footpath that runs from just beyond the gate at Top Lodge at Caerhays, or if you choose to use the road then it is about two miles away. There is a small car park at Portholland East and not many parking spaces at Portholland West. Portholland is the right place for families to go and it is equidistant between St. Austell and Truro two towns that have larger attractions. Portholland does not have many shops or other such facilities but you will find a small shop and Post Office there. It is also a great base if you want to do some exploring deeper into the intriguing Roseland peninsula. Portholland is also particularly well placed as it receives maximum amount of sunshine most of the year thus creating a balmy type climate that lasts until the middle of autumn.

Sarchu is an important halting point between Manali and Leh and is approximately equidistant from both these places. It is situated on the borders of the states of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. The scenery is bleak but awe-inspiring.It is at an altitude of 14070 feet and there is shortage of oxygen due to the high altitude and lack of vegetation. We spent a night here on the way to Leh and I could not sleep the whole night due to headache and nausea. It was one of the toughest places we have ever halted on a journey.

The Orion constellation is probably the most beautiful and imposing constellation of the winter sky, thanks to its bright stars and characteristic shape. As it is visible from both hemispheres, many ancient people recognized the constellation as a mythical hero or god. Four stars form a quadrilateral, while in the center of it three bright, equidistant stars form the hunter's characteristic belt (visible at the center of the image). The top left star of the quadrilateral is Betelgeuse, a giant red-orange star that is lately in the news as it is dimmer than usual and as it is in an advanced stage of stellar evolution, it can one day become a supernova and become dazzling in our night sky - although its light must travel more than 600 years to reach the Earth.

Underneath Orion’s belt, a diffuse glow is faintly discerned, which with a small telescope is revealed to be a magnificent dust and gas nebula, known as the Great Orion Nebula, a star-forming region about 1500 light-years away from us.

Extending the line formed by the three belt stars downward, we reach Sirius, the brightest star in the whole sky, in the constellation of the Great Dog (one of the two faithful hunter dogs of Orion according to Greek Mythology - Sirius is the bright star at the bottom of the photo between the trees). Its brilliance is partly due to its relatively high luminosity (about 25 times that of our Sun), but also to its relatively short distance to us - about 9 light years.

Sirius culminates (i.e. reaches its maximum height in the south) close to midnight at the New Year Eve (the exact time differs a bit depending on the observers’ longitude), when the nights are usually cold in the northern hemisphere. But one can also observe it at the end of summer, when it rises just before the sun does. So, during the mid-summer days Sirius travels (invisibly) close to the Sun in the sky and as a result many ancient people had associated it with the great summer heat (Dies Caniculares - “Dog Days”) and considered it as an ominous star.

The winter triangle is an unofficial asterism comprised of three bright stars: Orion's Betelgeuse, Sirius of the Great Dog constellation, and the third star is the other hunter's dog, Procyon, which rises before Sirius and announces its arrival (The name Procyon is Greek meaning “before the Dog” - Procyon is the bright star at the lower left of the photo, just to the right of the tree branches).

So, with this winter night sky scene (although captured before dawn at the end of October) I once again wish everyone a Happy New Year full of joyful moments enjoyed and captured - let the stars show you the way! Clear skies to everyone.

Can you balance and Egg on the Equinox?

Eggs in the balance

The egg being the most literal and obvious of all fertility symbols, ancient eggish customs survive not only in the form of egg rolling and Easter eggs, but also in the quaint superstitious belief, most often attributed to the Chinese, that you can stand a raw egg on end during the equinox. Apparently this derives from the notion that, due to the sun's equidistant position between the poles of the earth on the first day of spring, special gravitational forces apply.

For skeptics, the first objection that comes to mind is that there's another equinox on the first day of autumn — why does no one speak of balancing eggs on end in September? Secondly, while it's true that on both equinoxes the earth's axis is perpendicular to the sun so day and night are of equal length, there's no scientific reason to suppose that such an alignment has any effect on gravitational forces here on earth. Thirdly, if the equinox can cause this curious anomaly, why aren't there others? Why don't we hear talk of being able to stand broomsticks, pencils, lollipops, or toothpicks on end?

THE ANSWER - YOU CAN BALANCE AN EGG ON END, EVERY DAY, ALL YEAR LONG! But the Chinese created this custom to represent the idea of a rebirth and renewal.

Unlike BURIDAN'S DONKEY, this donkey is not a donkey... He chose to have a drink! ;)

BURIDAN'S DONKEY is an illustration of a paradox in philosophy concerning the conception of free will. It refers to a hypothetical situation wherein a donkey is placed equidistant to a stack of hay and a pail of water. Since the paradox assumes the donkey will always go to whichever is closer, he will stupidly die of both hunger and thirst since he cannot make any rational decision to choose one over the other. The paradox is named after the 14th century French philosopher Jean Buridan, whose philosophy of moral determinism it satirises. (from Wikipedia, slightly modifyed)

The remote Lighthouse of Ponta do Albernaz sits atop a cliff on the Northwest tip of the Island of Flores in the Azores. A lighthouse was first planned for the settlement of Ponta Delgada on the east coast in 1883. It was never built when in 1902 a commission on lighthouse postponed the plans in order to modernize the design and study the best location for a lighthouse. They came up with a controversial and unexpected proposal: Build a first-order light, with an equidistant beacon providing rotation at 5 second intervals on the promontory of Ponta do Albernaz about 3 kilometers (1.9 mi) away from the settlement of Ponta Delgada. That elevated position along the western coast would allow visibility as approached from the west, to the east in Corvo as well as the entire northwest / north coast of Flores.

In what was reported to be a friendly transaction, 5.525 square kilometres (2.133 sq mi) of pastureland was expropriated (at the cost of $3.500 reis) from property-owner João Lourenço in 1922. Construction commenced soon afterward. That construction, however, was a challenge as there was no access to the site by road from Ponta Delgada or any other location on Flores. The plans were adapted to the realities of the situation and the lighthouse was equipped with a third-order dioptoric beacon with a 500 millimetres (20 in) focal length. Moved by a clockwork turntable, the light had a range of 28 miles (45 km) range and was powered by a diesel generator. The lighthouse commenced operation on 28 January 1925, and utilized a lamp powered by a diesel generator.

Many modification have been made since it first started operation. In 1938, the light was converted to incandescent light which allowed the beacon to extend its range to 35 miles (56 km). In 1956, generating cells and a 3000watt/110 volt lamp were installed. In 1960, the site finally became connected to a telephone network. Later other improvement were made including expanding the lighthouse, and finally in 1983 replacing the light with a 1000 Watt/120 Volt halogen lamp.

Today, Farol da Ponta do Albarnaz is the only lighthouse in Portugal not linked to the national electrical network. Yes, a remote lighthouse.

Swissair Flight 111 was a scheduled international passenger flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, United States, to Cointrin International Airport in Geneva, Switzerland. This flight was also a codeshare flight with Delta Air Lines. On 2 September 1998, the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 performing this flight, registration HB-IWF, crashed into the Atlantic Ocean southwest of Halifax International Airport at the entrance to St. Margarets Bay, Nova Scotia. The crash site was 8 kilometres (5 mi; 4 nmi) from shore, roughly equidistant from the tiny fishing and tourist communities of Peggy's Cove and Bayswater. All 229 passengers and crew on board the MD-11 were killed, making the crash the deadliest McDonnell Douglas MD-11 accident in aviation history.

Marbles for Macro Mondays, borrowed from a friend, placed on a black pizza plate, Villeroy & Boch, series Manufacture Rock. For the light sun, through a metal plate for grilling.

The main challenge, was to place the marbles onto to the plate, somehow equidistant from each other, in a straight line, put no parallel to the lens, to get some dept of field. Last but the grill plate into a magic clamp, adjust the plate for the right hot spot, camera to tripod and take some photos.

The Livingston Depot is a restored 1902 Northern Pacific Railroad (NP) train station anchoring the downtown historic district of Livingston, Montana. It was designed by the Minnesota firm of Reed and Stem, the first architects for New York City's Grand Central Terminal in an Italianate style with red and yellow brick and ornate terra cotta detailing from lions' heads to floral figures and the NP's trademark yin-yang emblem, and its interior includes inlaid terrazzo and tiling including the same NP emblem. It was constructed in approximately three years for $112,000 and dedicated in the summer of 1902.

The current facility accommodated traffic for both the main and Yellowstone Park Branch lines, and it and its predecessors thus functioned as the primary gateway to Yellowstone National Park for most of its visitors for approximately a quarter century. It served as the headquarters for the NP's Rocky Mountain division, including orders and telegraphy, and would host active rail traffic including the North Coast Limited runs. The complex combines a main building, a restaurant building, and a baggage building connected by a colonnade surrounding a courtyard facing the railroad tracks. Its shorter-lived precursors were an 1882 wooden facility, which burned down, and an 1888 brick structure, which grew to be inadequate for the rapidly increasing and somewhat affluent passenger traffic the NP was bringing to visit Yellowstone.

The earliest fortunes of the Depot were tied to the fate of the railroad. Initially it was a busy connection center, sited adjacent to the large Livingston shops complex and served as an NP division headquarters, being roughly equidistant between the termini of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Seattle, Washington. Toward about World War II, rail travel to the park tapered off heavily in favor of automobile visits, and chiefly charter excursions used the Yellowstone Park line. In 1970 the NP merged with the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, Great Northern Railway, and Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway, forming the facility's new owner, the Burlington Northern Railroad; passenger train service was taken over by Amtrak in 1971. In 1979 Amtrak discontinued the North Coast Hiawatha in favor of the Empire Builder track on the high line, the old line of the Great Northern, and the Depot began to suffer some neglect. By the mid 1980s the BN began unsuccessfully to seek a buyer for it. Local citizens lobbied for its donation to the city and adoption by the non-profit Livingston Depot Foundation which they created for its extensive restoration and subsequent operation.

I think what is particularly interesting about this building is that it was designed by the architectural firm that did New York's Grand Central Station, and for those who have seen that you can attest to how beautiful it is.

I attempted this group shot of a fully decked out New 52 Justice League mainly to test a new editing technique called focus stacking. In most of my images, I position minifigures equidistant to the camera lens to ensure perfect focus across the board. This makes it more difficult to do larger group shots where it is necessary to stage multiple rows of figures at different distances from the camera.

Focus stacking is a technique that can alleviate this inevitable complication of macro photography. Essentially it involves making a digital composite from multiple images each with a different plane of focus. This can be performed pretty easily (and automatically) in any modern version of Adobe Photoshop.

I elected to use KO parts purely for aesthetic reasons. The SY Justice League series had really great arm printing that I wish Lego would give to more superhero minifigures. In my opinion, Batman benefits the most from the SY parts; the smaller Bat-symbol is very reminiscent of his appearance in the DC animated film, Justice League: War.

The nailed heads(Cabezas clavas) are sculptural monoliths that represent heads of mythical beings, belonging to the Chavin culture , a pre - Inca archaeological culture. They were embedded in a horizontal row and equidistant from the walls of the Temple of Chavin de Huantar . Currently, only one remains in its original place. They are called nails because each sculptural head had a spike or elongated structure on the back, which served to fix it in the concavities of the walls, like nails.

This wheatear was very shy and alert when I tried to photograph him. This was probably the reason the Siberian Chiffchaff hung around him - he always got warned when anything got too close. I observed the Chiffchaff changing places with the wheatear a few times before I had to leave that morning.

Part of our systematic migratory bird count in a vast desert landscape is that the counting teams cover multiple places in the desert, using equidistant observation points all laid out on an east-to-west line, this way covering around 20km of sky for 3-4 hours. We counted on four such locations, changing places every day. This picture was taken during our time off, in the morning before we had to get into the car and drive off-road for few hours.
