Originally built in 1959, the Belvidere Oasis is now one of four Oasis locations remaining in the Illinois Tollway system. These are a more unique rest area setup vs. the typical standalone buildings with a separate facility on each side. The Oases typically feature a separate gas station/mini-mart on each side, with all other vendors located in the shared building bridged over the interstate. (DeKalb being an exception as it has a connecting bridge over the interstate instead of a building) One benefit is it can allow for more options at a location since vendors only need to staff and operate a single store while serving customers traveling in both directions.
All of the 'bridge' style Oases were extensively rebuilt in the mid-2000's, adding a larger building structure with more natural lighting and updated amenities. Prior to the rebuild, the exterior structure resembled whichever fast food chain was operating the location, in this case it looked like a large McDonald's sitting atop the Tollway. (LINK)

As we walked around the hill from the woods over Bex, we had views over the vines, valleys and villages of Vaud.
Since time immemorial, salt – sodium chloride (NaCl) – has been recognised for its critical importance to the life of humans and animals alike. Bex is home to Switzerland's first salt mine.
