Breinig is a quaint little village in the westernmost part of Germany. It's been my home for the past 3 years and it has exceeded all expectations. You have the peace and quiet of a small town while being near the border with The Netherlands and Belgium and within short driving distance to Aachen, Köln and Düsseldorf. I am so fortunate to be able to walk outside of my front door and stroll through the endless fields and forest trails.
Frankreich / Provence - Gorges de Trévans
A preserved and relaxing place to discover on foot.
Neighbors of the Gorges du Verdon, the Gorges du Trévans are less frequented and wilder. Discover a preserved and restful place, which can be visited on foot, or even with your feet in the water!
A REMARKABLE NATURAL SITE
In the limestone rocks of the Jurassic, the torrent "l'Estoublaïsse" has patiently carved a vertiginous canyon whose cliffs rise 200 meters towards the sky. These grandiose landscapes have hosted a rich fauna and flora. This exceptional biodiversity, at the confluence of Mediterranean and Alpine influences, is now protected. The gorges of Trevans are classified as a biological reserve, a sensitive natural area and a Natura 2000 zone. The site is home to many species of birds and bats, and remarkable plants and flowers hanging from the cliffs.
A PARADISE BETWEEN NATURE AND HERITAGE
The gorges of Trevans offer an exceptional playground for hiking enthusiasts. The marked paths can lead you to the edge of the Estoublaïsse river, for a welcome refreshing break.
The old village of Trévans, attached since 1973 to the commune of Estoublan, gave its name to the gorges. During your walks, you will discover many vestiges which testify to an ancient human occupation. The hamlet of Valbonnette, renovated with care, and the remains of the old medieval religious establishment of Saint André du Désert, will brighten up your walks.
PRACTICAL INFORMATION
You can easily access the gorges of Trévans from the village of Estoublon, which is located about thirty kilometers south of Digne-les-Bains.
The paths can be steep, and we recommend wearing appropriate footwear. The climate can be particularly hot in the summer: a cap, sunglasses and water are essential.

Northern plains gray langur
The northern plains gray langur (Semnopithecus entellus) is a species of primate in the Cercopithecidae family. It is found in India on the lowlands north of the Godavari and Krishna rivers and south of the Ganges. It is thought to be introduced to western Bangladesh by Hindu pilgrims on the bank of the Jalangi River. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forests and subtropical or tropical dry shrubland. It is threatened by habitat loss.

Voor-Indische hoelman

Having a pleasant walkabout among the monkeys
You’ll find more monkeys on the loose on the Monkey Tree path. You really get very close to the monkeys between the treetops! What's more, there is a very special type of monkey on the loose here: the douroucouli. These night monkeys live in special night accommodation. If you want to spot them, you must first let your eyes get used to the dark and then follow the noises. You’ll meet the largest monkeys on the loose in Apenheul, the Bengal Hanuman langurs, almost at the end of the route and you'll find small dwarf monkeys all over Apenheul.

Over the rooftops of Landshut - or: the last coaches of type "n" in Bavaria. There is only one train left south of the Danube river that consists of these coaches. It is a train for pupils that commutes from Monday to Friday between Mühldorf and Landshut. At the 31st of March 2017 i took this picture of regional train RB 27145 to Mühldorf hauled by 218 404. On this photo spot on the southern outskirts of Landshut you have a good view over this city and you can discover many places of interest - like the church tower of St. Martin and the Trausnitz castle. You also may discover the steam cloud of Bavaria's last nuclear power plant which will end its service in 2022. The yellow building in the foreground is the former custom office - now a restaurant. Hurry up if you want to take pictures of this train - it will soon be replaced by a set of double deck coaches.

Last weekend I took some pictures at the famous waterfall Dreimühlen in the Eifel in Germany. This one is my favorite.
--------------------------------
A camera also belongs in my pocket on the short walk to the bakery, because there is always something to discover ... 😄 ... Jokes aside, the first title that came to mind was "Under Pressure", referring to a major social and environmental issue.

Potsdam, Friendship Island: Looking across the island to the new buildings on the bank of the Havel branch 'Old Waterway', to St. Nicholas' Church and the tower of the Old City Hall, crowned by a golden Atlas scuopture

The garden represents the basic forms of a monastery and the large surrounding hedges are symbolic of the outer walls. The cloister was interpreted in a modern way as the central theme of the garden, consisting of letters and signs, and shows text passages from the Old and New Testaments, from philosophy and culture. With a little time and leisure, it is easy to discover texts by Goethe, St. Francis of Assisi, Bonhoeffer and even the Scorpions.
On the opposite bank stands a church that we initially couldn't quite place because of its somewhat unusual tower. As we later discovered, it is the Gothic Palace Church, which turned out to be one of the biggest surprises of our visit. In front of it stands the Schlossberg Museum, Chemnitz's city museum, housed in a former monastery building.
www.chemnitz.de/de/unsere-stadt/geschichte/geschichte-ent...
This is where the history of the city of Chemnitz began a good eight centuries ago. The previously sparsely populated foothills of the low mountain range were systematically developed and expanded from the 12th century onwards at the instigation of German kings and emperors. As a base, Emperor Lothar von Süpplingenburg founded a monastery in 1136, which was placed under the Benedictine order. A few years later, this monastery took the initiative to establish a long-distance trade market. This provided important impetus for the establishment of the later town. From humble beginnings, the Benedictine monastery of St Mary's developed into one of the most important monasteries in Saxony. It became a centre for art, culture and science. Extensive income from the neighbouring villages and the mining industry in the Ore Mountains formed the basis for opulent building projects. In the late 13th century, the east wing of the cloister with its magnificent architectural sculpture was built with the involvement of the Meissen cathedral building workshop. The large fish pond, now known as the castle pond, was created below the monastery as early as 1483. The complex experienced the peak of its economic and cultural development in the late 15th and early 16th centuries: Under the abbots Heinrich von Schleinitz and Hilarius von Rehburg, there was a large-scale series of remodelling and new buildings that could compete with the most important castle and church buildings in the country. Today's castle church, completed in 1527, is one of the great late Gothic hall churches in Saxony. Leading artists such as the Wittenberg Cranach workshop and the sculptors Hans Witten and Franz Maidburg were brought in to decorate it. The so-called "Flagellation Column" is a unique work of art in Europe. As a consequence of the Reformation, monastic life came to an end in 1541. The huge estate, which also included Rabenstein Castle, was confiscated by the sovereign and converted into a ducal office. The buildings stood empty for a while before the Dresden court discovered them as a princely summer residence and had them converted into a prestigious residence. The Renaissance hall in today's Schloßbergmuseum with its magnificent design still gives an idea of the courtly splendour. However, interest quickly waned again. After 1632, the Thirty Years' War saw heavy looting and devastation. Since then, the extensive grounds have only been partially used and gradually fell into disrepair. In the 18th and 19th centuries, large parts were demolished, leaving only the church and two wings of the adjoining cloister buildings. Part of the church was used as a salt store. The neglected church was thoroughly restored between 1866 and 1897 and was given an 87 metre high neo-Gothic spire. It was a striking landmark of the town until it was damaged in 1945 and subsequently reduced to its current height of 48 metres. The remaining buildings were converted into the Museum of City History - now the Schloßbergmuseum - between 1929 and 1931. In a large-scale reconstruction phase between 1985 and 1994, the missing west and north wings were added in a modern style. To this day, the museum houses the valuable collections that the Chemnitz History Society has been amassing since 1872 and which have been systematically added to since then. Today, the castle church and the Schloßbergmuseum form a historical and structural unit that is not only one of the oldest, but also one of the most valuable monuments in the city of Chemnitz.

Detail of Dynyandi waterfall - the uppermost in a series of waterfalls in Iceland's Westfjords. The water is cascading down over almost 100 m height, and the basis of the enormous waterworks is more than 60 m wide. The name translates as "Thundering" or "Rioting" - which for the sheer level of noise is sure true.
For me, though, its one of the most soothing places on earth....
