Derby England" produced electricity for the whole factory, for light, the machines, for cooling of the 12 storage rooms 5 cooling cellars, where they were able to store 180000 carcasses and 850000 tons of final products. The basic element for cooling was ammonia. This Ransomes Sims and Jefferies Ltd steam engine was made in Ipswich, England in 1924. Here it is on display at the annual Steamfest in Sheffield, Tasmania.

This engine is usually described as 'primitive'

But it was quite sophisticated for it's time !

Aluminium block with replacable iron liners (replace them along with the pistons - and you have a brand new engine)

Aluminium head

Aluminium intake manifold

Cartrige type full-flow oil filter

Exhaust gas recirculation system to improve ecological issues

 

But also it has primitive solid adjustable valve lifters and manual choke

Caledonian Railway Class 439 No. 419: Based at the Bo’ness & Kinnell Railway No. 419 was built by the Caledonian Railway at St Rollox Works, Glasgow, in 1907. The locomotive was designed by J. F. Mcintosh for branch line work, fast suburban and banking duties and is now the flagship of the Scottish Railway Preservation Society.

 

Caledonian Railway Class 812 No.828: Owned by the CR828 Trust No. 828 was built by the Caledonian Railway at in 1899. The locomotive was designed by J. F. Mcintosh to handle a variety of stopping passenger and express goods workings and is now the flagship of the Strathspey Railway, Aviemore. 828 is visiting our railway until October. The Spa Valley Railway first started discussing the prospect of 828 visiting back in 2019 and we are extremely grateful to the Caledonian Railway 828 Trust and Strathspey Railway for making this visit possible.

Out for a bike ride into town today and manged to arrive just in time for one of Nene Valley Railways brilliant steam engines at Orton Mere. Pleased to see it smoking with a few suitably placed clouds in the background.
