I found a large egg case on the beach (adjacent photo) and cut it open, finding these embryonic skates still alive. Each of the four eggs was about 1.5" (4cm) in dia. Often egg cases cast ashore have nothing still alive in them, so I was surprised.
Morro Strand State Beach,
Morro Bay, California
"The skates are oviparous (egg layers), with fertilized eggs protected inside leathery rectangular egg cases that are deposited on the sea floor. Developing embryos are nourished through the attached egg yolk and hatch when it is depleted."
"Big skates have the largest egg cases of any California’s skate species, and are the only species to routinely have more than 1 embryo (up to 7) per egg case. They are also the largest skate found in California, growing up to 8 feet (2.4 meters) in length, though they are uncommon over 6 feet (1.8 meters). Maturity in females occurs at a length of 4.3 feet (1.3 meters) and 12 years . . ."-both from CA Dept. of Fish & Game (Wildlife) online
I spotted this poppy emerging in the garden this morning. I took a few photographs but didn't realise how beautiful it was until I saw it on screen (one of the problems of not carrying reading glasses). It's like an embryo -- well, I guess it is an embryo when you think of it. I went back an hour later to get some more shots as I thought it would be better if I got even closer and used focus stacking. But the flower had already opened up. I never thought of the decisive moment applying to flower photography but it obviously does.

statement: Embryo represents a portal to understanding the past, present and future connections in life. Woven features in the sculpture symbolise the forming of individual identity, through intercultural and intergenerational difficulties. also through the potential of connectedness and represent the interconnections between community, cultures and time. Life repeats itself in patterns, not just because the system of the universe is itself a pattern but because patterns of the behaviour repeat generation after generation unless old destructive patterns are broken and new constructive patterns are created.

Embryo Man by Robert Berkoff. Seen here near to the Italian Gardens at Trentham Gardens, Staffordshire. See info below on Clearing Banks.

This statue represents the rim of a 50p coin with the crests of the Clearing Banks of the time shown on the six visible sides and enveloping embryo man. It symbolises the all-embracing concern of the Clearing Banks for the financial well-being of their customers.
At the outbreak of war a decision was taken by officials of the Bankers Clearing House to move the Central Clearing House from London to Trentham, where it would occupy the ballroom and banqueting suite. The move was made in the summer of 1939 and the Central Clearing House remained at Trentham until 1945. In 1974 the Clearing Banks decided that the wartime activities of the Central Clearing Houses should be commemorated by means of a sculpture.
The completed sculpture was unveiled and presented to the Countess of Sutherland by Sir Eric Faulkner, MBE, Chairman of Lloyds Bank, on behalf of the Committee of London Clearing Banks. The sculpture has not withstood the rigours of the North Staffordshire climate well. Restoration of this and other works in the park will form part of an overall agreement, reached by the new owners, with English Heritage and the local planning authority for the future treatment of the landscape at Trentham.
NB. The Ballroom and Banqueting Suite are long gone.

Pretty similar to yesterdays photo, but different too. I think I won't be super creative this week because I've been trying to get stuff ready for my trip. I got a big clear plastic bag from ordering prints, so I decided to use it for a photo. It was hard picking out the shot to use because I liked how most of the shots turned out (for once! haha)

Bird brushes by lpdragonfly, DeviantArt, thank you!
Holly: Upright embryo, I know you took it! I want it back, NOW! (shouts at her younger sister)
Stacy: (false innocence) I'm sorry, what do you think I took?
Holly: (looms over her, in their living room, brandishing a hair brush) This is your final warning!
Stacy: And somehow, I'm not scared.
Holly: You're the reason older siblings should be able re-home younger ones. Alex! (complains to her friend, who's hanging out and barely paying attention to them)
Alex: No way. I'm an only child. I don't do sibling rivalry.
Dan Samuels: (voice from the kitchen) What's going on out there?
Stacy: (smirking) Daddy, Holly hit me!
Holly: You lying fetus!
Dan: I don't care who did what to whom, or why. The three of you need to keep it down.
Alex: Well, that was a biased parental decree. I had nothing to do with it.
Holly: That's what happens when you're not an only child.
Stacy: But SHE started it, Daddy! (still smirking)
Holly: I'm going to leave you in the woods.
Dan: I already told you; I don't care about your personal drama. Your mom worked until one A.M. on scenery for your drama class and I don't want either of you waking her up. Get in here and have breakfast then I'll drive you all to school.
Holly: (as they all sigh and leave the living room) This isn't over, disposable child. (to smirking Stacy)
Thank you to the cast!

This is the complex of nebulosity in Cassiopeia popularly known as the Heart and Soul Nebulas, the "heart" being on the upper right. The "soul" at lower left is also known as the Embryo Nebula. Officially they are IC 1805 (Heart) and IC 1848 (Soul). The extended round nebula off the upper right edge of the Heart is NGC 896, with IC 1795 attached to it at the extreme upper right corner.
Lots of other bits of nebulosity in the field carry labels from the second Stewart Sharpless catalogue —
- Sh2-196 is the isolated round nebula at upper left, with Sh2-192 a small round nebula to the right.
- Sh2-201 is the detached bit off the left side of the Soul.
- Sh2-198 is the detached bit off the bottom of the Soul.
Several star clusters inhabit the field, most embedded in the nebulas and helping to light them up —
- Melotte 15 is a loose group on the right side (ventricle?) of the Heart.
- NGC 1027 is the bright group to the left of the Heart.
- Collinder 32 is embedded in the right side of the Soul.
- Collinder 33 and 34 are in the left side of the Soul, but don't stand out here.
Oddly, two galaxies are also here embedded in the field despite it being in the Milky Way —
- At bottom right is a small yellow fuzzy object that is the dust-reddened irregular galaxy Maffei 1.
- While Maffei 2 is a dim and very small amorphous patch to the left of Maffei 1.
Technical:
This is a blend of filtered and unfiltered exposures —
- A stack of 15 x 6-minutes at ISO 1600 with just an Astronomik UV-IR Cut filter, for the stars and base core nebulosity (the pinker bits).
- A stack of 15 x 8-minutes at ISO 3200 with an IDAS NBZ dual-narrowband filter, for the majority of reddish nebulosity.
- So 3.5 hours of exposure in total.
- All with the Askar SQA85 astrographic refractor at its native f/4.8 and with the astro-modified Canon EOS R camera.
- On the ZWO AM5 harmonic drive mount, autoguided with the ASIAir Mini and ASI120mm autoguider camera.
Stacked, aligned, blended and processed in Photoshop 2026. Stars eliminated from the narrowband filter stack with RC-Astro StarXTerminator plug-in. Processed to bring out the more subtle variations in colours in the nebulas, so they do not appear as just monochromatic red.
Taken from home in Alberta on a very fine, if frosty, night November 18/19, 2025.
Captured through L + Hα + RGB filters: NGC 1333 is a nearby star-forming reflection nebula in the western part of the Perseus Molecular Cloud, home to ~150 very young stars (ages ≲ 1 Myr) and dozens of protostellar outflows.
In this view, the Hα channel reveals the ionised/jet-shock regions from young stars, while the RGB channels map the scattered starlight and dusty filaments. The interplay of young stars, jets and dense molecular gas makes this region a textbook case of clustered low-mass star-formation.
The rich structure of dust lanes and reflection nebulosity — illuminated by embedded B-type stars — provides both aesthetic beauty and physical insight: you’re seeing stellar infancy, not just pretty clouds.

I learnt how to make my own Photoshop brushes and am pretty pleased with myself.
As for the egg...I used an Ostrich egg which i superimposed over a balloon Darina was holding. Yes, i have an ostrich egg here at home...:)!
Must be seen LARGE
Hope everyone had a good Christmas - I am heading for a creative 2012! Thanks for all the support, feedback and friendship!!!!

NGC 1333 is a reflection nebula in the constellation Perseus, it is also known as the Embryo Nebula. This is a bright but small object surrounded by thick interstellar dust clouds, with some of them being so thick that they completely hide the light behind them.
