Excerpt from www.amo.gov.hk/en/historic-buildings/monuments/hong-kong-...:
Tung Lin Kok Yuen is situated at No. 15, Shan Kwong Road, Happy Valley, Hong Kong, being a Buddhist monastery founded in 1935 by Lady Clara Ho Tung and her husband Sir Robert Ho Tung. The name of the monastery was derived from the couple’s name Sir Robert Ho Tung and Lady Clara (Dharma name Lin Kok).
Lady Clara was a Buddhist and lay patron who had a passionate desire to spread the wisdom and practice of Buddhism as well as to promote the education of women. She founded the Po Kok Free School and the Po Kok Buddhist Institute in Hong Kong in the early 1930s to provide education for women and training for nuns. After Tung Lin Kok Yuen was first built, it housed both the School and the Buddhist Institute. As it is located in the residential area of Happy Valley, Tung Lin Kok Yuen marked the emergence of an urban monastery model in Hong Kong, as contrasted to the traditional monastery setting in the mountains.
With its arrowhead-shaped building plan, Tung Lin Kok Yuen’s appearance resembles a “giant ship” symbolising one of Mahayana Buddhism’s concepts of ferrying all beings to the “other shore”, or in other words enlightenment itself. The architect responsible for the building design was Fung Tsun, and Venerable Shi Ai Ting provided extensive advice for details which embody the Buddhist doctrine. While Tung Lin Kok Yuen adopted Western structural forms, it retained traditional Chinese designs in both its interior and exterior decorations such as flying eaves, brackets and glazed tile roofs. Following the traditional Chinese layout for a Buddhist monastery, it had a Skanda Hall, the Grand Buddha Hall and a Tripitaka Library in designated sequence. On each side of the Grand Buddha Hall were the Dharma Bell and the Dharma Drum. Behind the Grand Buddha Hall there was a courtyard which was redeveloped in 1954 into a three-storied Lin Kok Memorial Building. This was also designed by Fung Tsun to be integrated with the original building in the same style of architecture. The first floor of the Lin Kok Memorial Building now houses the Bhaisajyaguru Buddha Hall.
Tung Lin Kok Yuen was declared a monument in 2017.
🎶 Vaughan Williams - A Sea Symphony - Oramo
The relationship between men and ocean waves is as ancient and complex as the sea itself. At times, the ocean's might presents an awe-inspiring challenge, while at others, its waves are a source of primal exhilaration. This duality mirrors the human experience—we are both vulnerable amidst nature's forces and remarkably capable in harnessing them.
For seafarers aboard powerful ships, the vast force held within a single wave can be terrifyingly real. In a perfect storm, relentless waves become monstrous leviathans from the deep. They toss even the largest vessels like mere toys, threatening to capsize them or shatter them against hidden reefs. Stories of sailors battling the elements are woven into our maritime history, tales of courage and despair echoing against the relentless crash of the sea.
These very same waves hold an irresistible allure for the most daring among us. Surfers embody the other side of the men-versus-ocean story – not one of fear, but of thrilling defiance. Where the ship captain sees a wall of destruction, the surfer sees a fleeting opportunity. They dance with nature's fury, riding the crests of waves on fragile boards. In this act, they embrace the chaos of the ocean's power, finding a strange harmony amid the maelstrom.
The ocean reminds us that humanity, despite its technology and ambition, remains subject to the raw forces of nature. The captain and the surfer, though inhabiting seemingly opposite ends of the spectrum, are both engaged with the ocean's majesty. In their respective ways, men find both challenge and exhilarating freedom in the dynamic energy of the waves. There's a humbling power in witnessing – or even attempting to conquer – the sheer, untamable wildness of the sea.

On 8 June 2016, the Serpentine Gallery in London’s Hyde Park revealed their 16th annual Pavilion.
The Serpentine Pavilion, designed by the Danish architects Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), is a wall that is transformed from a straight line to three-dimensional space, creating a dramatic structure that has the appearance of having been ‘unzipped’.
BIG attempted to design a structure that would embody aspects often perceived as opposites. They wanted a structure that would be free-form yet rigorous, modular yet sculptural, both transparent and opaque, both box and blob.
Serpentine2.jpg
(Serpentine Pavilion 2016 designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG); (10 June – 9 October); Photo © Iwan Baan)
They began with one of the most basic architectural elements: the brick wall. Rather than clay bricks or stone blocks, the wall is built using pultruded fibreglass frames stacked on top of each other. It is then pulled apart to form a cavity with a cavernous appearance. This space is a complex three-dimensional environment which can be explored and experienced in a variety of ways, inside and outside.
At the top, the wall appears to be a straight line, while at the bottom, it forms a sheltered valley at the entrance of the Pavilion and an undulating hillside towards the Park.
During the day the structure will accommodate a café and family activities, while at night it will become a space for the Serpentine’s Park Nights programme of performance pieces by artists, writers and musicians.

"Chanteloup XXO embodies a heritage transmitted through nine generations, as the Martell art of blending has been passed on from one Cellar Master to the next. Today, just as I blend eaux-de-vie that were aged by my predecessors, so I nurture eaux-de-vie that will be blended by my successors.”
The Colour
Rich amber in colour, with shimmering highlights.
The Aroma
Luscious aromas of honey, vine peach and apricot, complemented by notes of fig, almonds and walnuts.
The Taste
Intense fruity aromas predominate amid an impression of fullness, balance, power and elegance, which continues into a remarkably long finish.
Martell Chanteloup XXO is named after the historic Château de Chanteloup near Cognac, France, which is the soul of Maison Martell. It is fitting, therefore, that Martell Chanteloup XXO takes cognac lovers right to the heart of the House , and to the very essence of its art of blending. This legacy of savoir-faire, perpetuated through nine generations, is today in the hands of Cellar Master Christophe Valtaud, who blends Martell Chanteloup XXO from up to 450 very old eaux-de-vie, from the four most prestigious cognac crus, brought together in perfect harmony. An unprecedent combination of richness and complexity, Martell Chanteloup XXO offers cognac lovers a complete expression of the very best of the Cognac terroir.

During Krishna Janmashtami celebrations in India, young boys partake in a cherished tradition of adorning blue paint to emulate Lord Krishna, a revered deity in Hindu mythology. Lord Krishna, often depicted with blue skin, represents divinity, compassion, and playfulness. His birth anniversary, Janmashtami, is marked by various rituals and festivities, including reenactments of his life events.
Krishna's mythology is rich with tales of his divine exploits, teachings, and playful antics as a cowherd in Vrindavan. He is celebrated for his wisdom, compassion, and unwavering devotion to righteousness, as depicted in sacred texts like the Bhagavad Gita and the Bhagavata Purana. Through Janmashtami celebrations and practices like wearing blue paint, devotees reaffirm their connection to Lord Krishna and seek to embody his virtues of love, devotion, and righteousness in their own lives.
A war of wills, a clash between fear and hope. The demon represents doubt, the man embodies courage. In the eternal abyss, each strike brings him closer to victory, each moment of struggle a testament to the indomitable spirit within. In the end, it's not the abyss that wins—but the strength to rise above it.

ENG: The Battle of Nations Monument commemorates the bloodiest battle of mankind to date (100,000 dead). From 14 to 19 October 1813, the Allied armies of Russia, Prussia, Austria and Sweden had won the decisive victory over Napoleon and the French. After 15 years of construction, the monument was inaugurated on 18 October 1913 in the presence of the German Emperor Wilhelm II and the Saxon King Friedrich August III.
At 91 metres, the Völkerschlachtdenkmal - also affectionately called "Völki" by the people of Leipzig - is one of the highest monuments in Europe and is visited by up to 300,000 guests every year. A total of 500 steps lead from the water surface to the upper viewing platform and glass ball on the roof. There you have a panoramic view over Leipzig and its surroundings.
A highlight of the monument are the 324 almost life-size equestrian figures in the dome, the crypt, the singers' corridor, the four 10-metre-high giant figures in the Hall of Fame - these are supposed to embody the German qualities of bravery, strength of faith, popular power as well as sacrificial joy.
Celebrated for their harmony singing and energetic instrumentals, they embody the values of homemade and homegrown music and lifestyle. Their unique old time mountain style takes inspiration from the music of the Appalachian Mountains and beyond.

Taken last Friday at an outdoor concert ~ Peter Karp and the Roadshow. How lucky a little town like Sparta, NJ is to get a free show like this!
I was there because my friend is the bass player .... and the funniest guy I know, and he told me that I was the official band photographer (even though I am never invited on any of the road trips). It was too hot... and threatening rain.... and I was tired... but I said I would be there... so off I went.... and was treated to a sensational show. Loved every minute. Glad I went.
And what is to become of this photo....? A story for another day.

The beaver, a national symbol of Canada, embodies productivity, resourcefulness, and persistence. It teaches teamwork and the importance of individual contributions, symbolizing creativity, cooperation, and harmony. The Pom Pom, resembling a friendly beaver on ice, serves as a temporary public winter shelter, warming visitors and inspiring them with the beaver’s spirit.
Inspired by the beaver's ball shape when wrapping for heat, the Pom Pom’s form is spherical with a hollow center. The shelter encourages reflection on nature and sustainability. Using natural materials, it highlights living in harmony with the environment, promoting a deeper connection with nature and fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility.
Imagine a snowy landscape where the Pom Pom stands, its fluffy tree branches glistening with frost. The construction process involves community members, and craftspeople working together, much like a colony of beavers.
As the sun sets and stars twinkle, the Pom Pom pavilion becomes a magical haven. Visitors are encouraged to engage in communal activities like storytelling, music performances, and workshops, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose.
This design provides a functional shelter and reminds us of our responsibility to protect and preserve the natural world. Using materials that blend seamlessly with the environment and promoting sustainability, the Pom Pom pavilion embodies the beaver's spirit and invites visitors to reconnect with nature and one another.
The pavilion starts with wood beams on a wood base. The external finish, made of locally sourced tree branches, repels snow, keeping the interior dry and cozy. These materials are chosen to ensure the structure is both durable and harmonious with its natural surroundings.
Inside, the pavilion is insulated with natural materials like straw, creating a warm atmosphere.

Because eggs embody the essence of life, people from ancient times to the modern day have surrounded them with magical beliefs, endowing them with the power not only to create life but to prophesy the future.
Eggs symbolize birth and are believed to ensure fertility. They also symbolize rebirth, and thus long life and even immortality.
Eggs represent life in its various stages of development, encompassing the mystery and magic of creation. Creation myths commonly describe how the universe was hatched from an egg, often laid by some mythical water bird swimming in the primordial waters...Early mythmakers viewed both the sun and the egg as the source of all life; the round, yellow yolk even symbolized the sun.
Clearly, eggs had great symbolic potential...In Europe of pagan and Christian times, eggs symbolized life and resurrection.

This C.Y. Fashion MEGAN Top & Shorts Fatpack embodies what I would term as "edgy" fashionista style. Yes, this edgy '80s trend has resurfaced, and apparently fashion girls here in SL are loving it.
If you happen to follow fashion bloggers here or on Instagram, then you certainly see them wearing more fishnet tights with denim shorts. This combo looks so stylishly hip, yet many women are reluctant to try it. What has prompted this reluctance is the degree of streetwear bordering or associated with this somewhat scandalizing look, rather than avant-garde or just women expressing themselves.
Fashion here in SL isn't all about being risqué or a saint. Instead, it's about exploring the millions of options that lie between those two boundaries. This C.Y. Fashion Megan outfit is one such example.
So go forth and explore, ladies. Show off your fishnet stockings, cheeky denim shorts, garters and thigh high boots, your boobs, or whatever body asset you like best.
The C.Y. Megan Fatpack set includes the Top, Shorts, Garters Boots, and BOM Fishnet tights. The Top features a 10 color HUD. The Denim Shorts come with a 12 color HUD and the Garters come with a 10 color HUD. The Boots come separately in either Black, Grey, Red, or White - each with accessory colors.
This C.Y. Megan Fatpack is exclusively available at this months Swank Wild Spring Fashion Event. It fits Reborn, Maitreya, Legacy, and GenX mesh bodies.

No. 2 - 4: Exploring - the Abbey Church of Saint Mary the Virgin, Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire .
Stained Glass of the 21st Century.
The theme for the two windows is the Benedictine motto "Laborare et Orare". This is interpreted through a number of scriptural passages that themselves explore, in different ways, ideas about the two interlocking states or work and prayer.
The south window is based upon verses from the Old Testament, in the right hand light are scenes that could embody work of all kinds. Two figures are planting a tree - "the righteous, and the wise, and their works, arte in the hand of God" (Ecclesiastes 9). A group walk through the landscape = "cause me to know the way wherein I should walk, for I lift up my soul to thee" (Psalm 143)
In the centre light a figure kneels in wonder and prayer at the revelation of God's works - "Oh Lord how manifold are thy works!" (Psalm 140). His leafy crown ("For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour" (Psalm 8) connects him to the landscape that extends up into the distance.
The left hand light is about work as expressed by the making of sacred places - "he shall build my city" (Isaiah 56). Masons are working on a block of stone at the foot of great columns.
In the south-easterly window the theme is gathered into a sequence of questions and answers from John Chapter 6.
To the right are those who "also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus". They have climbed up from the shore of Galilee, and they ask, "What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?" Jesus, in the left-hand light, answers "this is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent".
The central light is a rustling, whispering cornfield, the space that we may occupy in our labours - "Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest." (Matthew 9).

Created by Thomas Denny.
These windows have been funded by
Friends of Tewkesbury Abbey
to celebrate the 900th anniversary of the arrival of the Benedictine Monks from
Cranborne, Dorset in 1102 to the new monastery at Tewkesbury
The windows were dedicated by the Bishop of Gloucester at the 900th
Anniversary Festival Service on Saturday 19th October 2002.
Thomas Denny
- who was commissioned to create these two windows:-
Thomas Denny was born in London and educated at King Alfred’s School, Hampstead, which he calls ‘mildly progressive’. Fortunately, that mild progressiveness meant that art was taken seriously and that his evident artistic gifts were nurtured. He chose to go to art college in Edinburgh partly because there was an emphasis there on the drawing and painting traditions, which was unusual in the 1970s. ‘In fact,’ he says with regret, ‘it’s extraordinary what a stranglehold conceptual art still has on art education.’
There was a stained glass department at Edinburgh, but he did not do much work with it. After leaving college, he was establishing a reputation as a coming painter when the grandmother of a friend of a friend commissioned him to create a stained glass window for a church near Stirling in Scotland. Other jobs followed, including a church in Cheltenham for which he did ten windows over ten years, and today he is not only fascinated by stained glass but has a reputation which puts him among the country’s leading exponents of the medium. His work can be seen all over the country, in sites ranging from Gloucester Cathedral to tiny village churches. In Dorset it is in the churches of Hinton St Mary, Tarrant Hinton and Powerstock, as well as Bridport Hospital.
Although Thomas has less time for painting now, he still sees himself primarily as a painter. ‘The thinking that goes into making a painting is better training for doing stained glass than the technicalities of cutting and leading,’ he told me. ‘The decisions you take about ideas, treatment and so on are the same decisions as go into a painting – it’s just that the ways of bringing them about are different. It is also different because stained glass has the huge extra element of the constraints of the place where it is to be installed. You have to like those constraints, work with them and use them as an impetus, not an intrusion.’ He goes on, without bitterness, ‘Yet stained glass is not always recognised as part of the art world, although stained glass windows are some of our most ambitious public works of art. Not many artists (John Piper is an exception) have bridged the gap between painting and stained glass in the public’s mind.’
Stained glass art also differs from painting in the degree to which the glass can be prepared before the paint is applied. Acid etching, for example, can be used. ‘Flashed’ glass (clear glass with a thin layer, or ‘flash’, of colour on the surface) is modified by the partial or complete removal of the colour by acid; by applying wax to areas of the surface, Thomas can prevent the acid from eating into those areas of colour. Two pieces of acid-etched flashed glass can be leaded up together, one on top of the other – this is known as plating. It is a technique which makes possible an almost infinite palette of colour, as well as giving vibrancy and depth. Flashed glass was first used in the 14th century. Another technique is to apply silver nitrate to the glass as a paste which is then fired in the kiln. When it is scraped off, it has stained the glass in a rich variety of yellows and golds, depending on the thickness of the paste and how long it is left on the glass.
When the preparation has been done, Thomas sticks the window up against the light, holding it in position with beeswax. Now he starts to apply paint, using a special material which contains ground glass. Next, the glass is fired in a special kiln to bond the paint to it. Although the result is predictable, there is still time for refinements and adjustments as each piece of glass is likely to be fired two or three times.
A new Denny window usually starts with a brief from whoever is commissioning the work, typically a Parochial Church Council. This can be quite short: the brief for three windows for Sunderland Minster, on which Thomas is working at the moment, ran to only half a dozen sentences. He then produces a painting for approval, putting his own interpretation on the brief he has been given. In the case of the Sunderland window, for example, it had to include Benedict Biscop, patron of the city, and the Venerable Bede, but it was Thomas who added references to the city’s industries and a representation of the mouth of the River Wear.
The next stage is a cut-line drawing on which the technical requirements of each piece of glass are noted, but there is still plenty of scope for the ideas to be developed further once Thomas actually starts painting onto the glass. When the work is complete – and the Sunderland windows will take about eight months – it is carefully transported to the site and installed under Thomas’s supervision.
Asked about his inspirations, Thomas replies, ‘I get my inspiration from looking at art but not necessarily art which might be seen as close to what I do,’ Pressed, he quotes Pierre Bonnard and Samuel Palmer, but says that the greatest influence on him is the close-to landscape and the imagery it suggests. ‘In this part of Dorset the landscape is very beautiful scenically,’ he says, ‘but also every square yard is full of richness. In my windows I get very engrossed in the minutiae of surfaces and the inter-connection of forms in the landscape. I feel angry that this close-quarter richness has become blander due to changes in farming and land management.’
This aspect of Thomas Denny’s work can be seen in a small window that he recently completed for a grotto in the garden created in memory of the late Queen Mother in the Botanical Gardens, Edinburgh. It shows a landscape of a loch and a hill but they are viewed between two rocks in the foreground which are covered in lichen, moss and ferns – the sort of landscape in miniature which so inspires Thomas and for whose future he fears.
While Thomas was at art college, his brother did a course in stone conservation at Weymouth College. He and some others rented the gatehouse at Wolfeton House, near Charminster, and one of his house-mates, Benita, was to become Thomas’s wife. Thomas himself lived in the Wolfeton gatehouse for a while, then took over the lease on half of the house in Gloucestershire to which his parents had moved. Benita having been born in Lytchett Minster, they decided to move to Dorset when the lease expired and bought a tumbledown cottage in Hinton St Mary. Having restored it, they lived there for ten years before moving to their present home at Belchalwell. Again, it badly needed restoration and the Dennys also built on extension using traditional cob to match the rest of the house. They moved, says Thomas, ‘because they wanted somewhere where they could contemplate the landscape from the windows.’
While talking about influences on him, I asked Thomas if it would be possible to do what he does if he were a convinced atheist. ‘That’s a complicated and un-straightforward question,’ he replied. ‘I certainly feel that what I’m doing is worthwhile. One must approach it with sympathy and reverence, but those qualities can also be found in non-religious art; better a still life by Braque, say, than a piece by someone who is perhaps a wonderful Christian but a poor artist.’ It may be this hint of objectivity which makes Thomas Denny’s work s powerful; non-Christians admire and relate to it, while Christians find it (to quote the brief for the Sunderland Minster window) ‘an aid to prayer and contemplation’.

This look steps into the shadows of what is yet to come, embodying the Ghost of Christmas Future in all her haunting elegance. She does not rush or warn—she simply exists, a silent prophecy wrapped in darkness and gold. The structured black gown flows like a funeral veil, restrained and regal, while the high slit reveals a gleam of burnished armor beneath, hinting that survival, strength, and consequence walk hand in hand.
Behind her, the spiked, skeletal adornment forms a cruel halo—part throne, part burden—crafted from skulls and barbs that speak of choices made and paths left unturned. The gold tones glow against the darkness, symbolizing how even in the bleakest futures, traces of value, legacy, and memory remain. Her face, touched with the pallor of death, is calm and knowing, reminding us that the future does not scream—it watches.
As the final spirit of Christmas, this evolution is not about fear, but reflection. The Ghost of Christmas Future asks us to look forward honestly, to acknowledge that every decision shapes what stands behind us and what awaits ahead. In her silence, she offers the most powerful gift of all: awareness.

This was the main shot that I wanted from the Open House this year. It struck me as just the kind of grand interior that I like. And it didn't disappoint when I walked into the room.
However, I'm underwhelmed by the photo. Unlike my other pictures of this genre, there's stuff that provide some depth to the picture...pews, seats, lighting, artwork along the walls, pillars, etc. This just a big empty space. And it's round, so you don't even get walls functioning as leading lines.
So I like the picture, mostly because I was there. But you folks have permission to not like it.
Technical: This was shot on a tripod, on a stage, about as perfectly centered as I could get it. And I used HDR to balance the light coming in from the windows.

"And we who embody the local eyes and ears and thoughts and feelings of the cosmos we've begun, at last, to wonder about our origins. Star stuff, contemplating the stars, organized collections of 10 billion-billion-billion atoms contemplating the evolution of matter, tracing that long path by which it arrived at consciousness here on the planet Earth and perhaps, throughout the cosmos."
Carl Sagan: Cosmos
Sunsets embody the delicate balance between endings and beginnings, safety and vigilance, light and shadow. As the day melts into night, the world pauses in a moment of transition, inviting us to reflect on life’s own complexities. On one hand, the sunset offers serenity—a sense of closure to the day’s endeavors. Its warm, fading hues paint the sky with tranquility, reminding us to slow down, appreciate beauty, and find peace in the inevitable cycles of life. There’s comfort in the rhythm of sunsets; they ground us and signal rest, a sanctuary from the busyness of existence.
Yet, as the light fades, the shadows grow longer, and with them comes the mystery and uncertainty of night. The sunset is also a harbinger of change, a reminder that darkness must follow even the brightest days. In its fleeting beauty lies a truth we all wrestle with: the moments of peace we cherish are often paired with challenges that require us to stay vigilant, adaptable, and ready to face the unknown. Just as sunsets fade into the unknown territory of night, life asks us to navigate transitions, uncertainties, and choices that test our resolve.
Life, like the sunset, is a duality—a blend of calm and chaos, certainty and mystery. It’s a balance of embracing moments of joy and comfort while preparing for the struggles and questions that lie ahead. Sunsets teach us that beauty exists not just in the light, but in its interplay with shadow. They remind us to savor the fleeting moments of peace while understanding that the darker hours are just as much a part of the journey. In this duality, both sunset and life find their profound meaning.

Semisonic-Closing Time
The monument erected here to his memory takes the form of an Anglian Cross, embodying the ornament and general treatment of the Northumbria of Cædmon's time, as shewn in the four great contemporary crosses of Bewcastle, Ruthwell, Rothbury, and Hexham, erected towards the end of the seventh century. The Caedmon Cross, standing twenty feet high, is hewn out of the fine grained hard sandstone of the Black Pasture Quarry in Northumberland. Upon its front are carved panels of the Christ in the act of blessing, of David playing the harp, of the Abbess Hild, and of Cædmon in the stable inspired to sing his great song. On the arms of the Cross above are the symbols of the four evangelists, and the Agnus Dei in the centre. Below is the inscription: "To the Glory of God, and in memory of His servant Cædmon. Fell asleep hard by A.D. 680."
