The River Liffey (Irish: An Life) is a river in Ireland, which flows through the centre of Dublin. Its major tributaries include the River Dodder, the River Poddle and the River Camac. The river supplies much of Dublin's water and a range of recreational activities.

Ptolemy's Geography (2nd century AD) described a river, perhaps the Liffey, which he labelled Οβοκα (Oboka). Ultimately this led to the name of the River Avoca.

The Liffey was previously named An Ruirthech, meaning "fast (or strong) runner". The word Liphe (or Life) referred originally to the name of the plain through which the river ran, but eventually came to refer to the river itself. It was also known as the Anna Liffey, possibly from an anglicisation of Abhainn na Life, the Irish phrase that translates into English as "River Liffey". James Joyce embodies the river as "Anna Livia Plurabelle" in Finnegans Wake.

Windsor Castle is a royal residence at Windsor in the English county of Berkshire. It is strongly associated with the English and succeeding British royal family, and embodies almost 1000 years of architectural history.

The original castle was built in the 11th century after the Norman invasion of England by William the Conqueror. Since the time of Henry I, it has been used by the reigning monarch and is the longest-occupied palace in Europe. The castle's lavish early 19th-century State Apartments were described by early 20th century art historian Hugh Roberts as "a superb and unrivalled sequence of rooms widely regarded as the finest and most complete expression of later Georgian taste". Inside the castle walls is the 15th-century St George's Chapel, considered by the historian John Martin Robinson to be "one of the supreme achievements of English Perpendicular Gothic" design.

After a period of neglect during the 18th century, George III and George IV renovated and rebuilt Charles II's palace at colossal expense, producing the current design of the State Apartments, full of Rococo, Gothic and Baroque furnishings. Queen Victoria made a few minor changes to the castle, which became the centre for royal entertainment for much of her reign. Windsor Castle was used as a refuge by the royal family during the Luftwaffe bombing campaigns of the Second World War and survived a fire in 1992. It is a popular tourist attraction, a venue for hosting state visits, and the preferred weekend home of Queen Elizabeth II.

Snæfellsjökull, a 700,000 year old volcanic mountain in western Iceland was made famous by Jules Verne in the 1864 novel "Journey to the Center of the Earth" as the entrance to a passage leading to the center of the earth. When gazing upon this magnificent mountain it's hard not to stop and stare. While traveling or in life it's often easy to forget to stop and savor the moments. That's a message that my friend and amazing landscape photographer Patrick Di Fruscia (pictured here) embodies and lives by and something we would all be wise to remind ourselves to do every once in a while.

April 12, 2015. We had spent the afternoon at the local pub, playing pool, having a few awful beers, and eating half-frozen pies. I had my fingers crossed that sunset would turn something special on for us at this windmill, and shortly after, we were flying down the highway in a bid to catch the light before it drifted below a thick cloud teetering on the horizon.

After dodging a few emu's at high speed, we arrived at one of my most loved Australian scenes. This windmill embodies the classic Australian outback feeling better than anywhere else I've found.

A Renaissance highlight in the Southwest of Germany.

Set in the scenic landscape of the Tauber valley, Weikersheim Palace (Schloss Weikersheim) lies at the heart of the small town of Weikersheim.

With its beautiful garden, the palace embodies the Renaissance ideal of a country estate. In 1586, Count Wolfgang of Hohenlohe took up residence in the former moated castle, and promptly ordered the construction of a new palace. With an unusual three-sided floorplan, the palace reflected the Renaissance style of the time, but foreshadowed the Baroque era that was to come.

The most distinctive feature of the palace grounds is the many Baroque statues that populate the garden.

Naufragiul Universal - Marco Vargas and Chloé Brûlé accept the challenge of meeting in a show created for unique spaces. Starting point? A wreck and two lost creatures desperately trying to form a connection and find a way out. The need for movement will determine the course of this journey, and with the help of simple elements, the way will be opened to build and conquer spaces. The "Shipwreck" (Naufragio Universal) reveals the great spirit of mankind, by embodying the fragility and instinct of human survival.

"“See you at Sunset!” This iconic phrase has embodied the spirit and history of Key West since the event took off in the late 1960s! Beginning two hours before sunset, it’s a celebration and view that has captured the love and astonishment of iconic figures from Mark Twain in the 1800s to Tennessee Williams in the late 20th century! The Key West Sunset Celebration invites everyone to partake in watching the glowing pink and red sun sink into the Gulf of Mexico horizon. The nightly festival hosts visitors from all over the world who come to take part in the magicians, jugglers, clowns, psychics, local musicians, artists, and food vendors that combine for an incredible cultural experience. It is a fusion of friends and talents that has captivated tourists and locals alike. This nightly party has everything any local or guest could ever hope to stumble upon. The beauty, sheer history, and pure passion of this event have been immortalized in renowned art, stories, poetry, and photography!"

[PT] Entre ruas, sombras e ficções

Contemplo ruas, pessoas e pedras, entre ficções e esquecimentos, inspirado no poeta, talvez, percebo as sombras dos gestos de outros, a poesia do crepúsculo, um desassossego.

An exemplification of natural beauty, the butterfly is an iconic and biophilic symbol that embodies faith, transformation, and freedom which brings us in alignment with achieving our highest human potential. Getting a butterfly tattoo is a fantastic way to add extra beauty and meaning into your Second Life.

Traditionally, the butterfly has also been closely connected to femininity and romantic love, which is why butterfly tattoo designs are so popular.

This BOM [HDesign] Butterfly X Belly Tatto is one such exquisite example. It comes in 60, 70, 80, and 90% graduations.

It’s rare that we see things in nature that are as eye-catching as butterflies. And, like the Goddess you are, they possess a special allure.

Tulips are a genus of herbaceous plants in the Liliaceae family, which has around 100 species native to warm temperate regions of the Old World. Several species are widely cultivated as ornamental plants and have given rise to the creation of several thousand varieties.

The tulip in the language of flowers

the tulip generally symbolizes love, but with nuances that vary according to its color. Purple, she embodies royalty. Blanche, she asks for forgiveness. The yellow tulip, long regarded as a hopeless declaration of love, today conveys a message of joy and sunshine. And the red tulip means "perfect love".

Chaos embodied in a young Redbud Tree, Cercis canadensis, planted between the road and the old woodland in Cullinan Park, Sugar Land, Texas. Reminded me of the stringy distribution of Dark Matter on a cosmic scale, and of Vincent van Gogh’s “Flowering Plum Tree” (after Hiroshige, 1887), and especially “Almond Blossom” (1890), painted just before his death. Saw an exhibit of his work at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam some decades ago, which was interspersed with work by his contemporaries, treating similar subjects in not too dissimilar styles. On every wall, the merest glance would suffice to identify van Gogh, which invariably jumped out of the crowd to grab my attention.

The House of World Cultures has since its foundation is based in the former Congress Hall. The convention center is an architectural landmark of Western modernity. The building was built as an American contribution to the International Building Exhibition in 1957 and should embody the freedom of exchange of ideas. Thus, the construction from the beginning was associated with ideas of Western modernity and the East-West positioning.

Joseph comes to believe that a magnificent oak tree that hangs over his new house embodies his father's spirit...

And this I dreamt, and this I dream,

And some time this I will dream again,

And all will be repeated, all be re-embodied,

You will dream everything I have seen in dream.

To one side from ourselves, to one side from the world

Wave follows wave to break on the shore,

On each wave is a star, a person, a bird,

Dreams, reality, death - on wave after wave.

No need for a date: I was, I am, and I will be,

Life is a wonder of wonders, and to wonder

I dedicate myself, on my knees, like an orphan,

Alone - among mirrors - fenced in by reflections:

Cities and seas, iridescent, intensified.

A mother in tears takes a child on her lap.

Every day there are disasters in the world, wars, earthquakes, tornadoes, droughts, floods ----

There is no news of good news, or at least, they are less and less resonant ----

A nice and certain news is that there will be a sunset and dawn every day, for those who want to turn their gaze, and this comfort me ....

Thanks for your recent visits, favorites, comments and invitations. I go slow, but everything is very much appreciated, as always....

Neuschwanstein embodies both the contemporaneous architectural fashion known as castle romanticism, and King Ludwig II's enthusiasm for the operas of Richard Wagner. At the time of King Ludwig's death the palace was far from complete. He slept only 11 nights in the castle.

The Basilica of Saint Dominic & Porto Salvo stands as a beacon of Baroque beauty in the vibrant city of Valletta, Malta. This architectural marvel is a must-visit for any traveler seeking to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Maltese history and culture. As you step into the basilica, you are greeted by a breathtaking interior adorned with elaborate frescoes, intricate woodwork, and stunning altarpieces that tell stories of the past. The soft glow of candlelight enhances the spiritual atmosphere, inviting visitors to pause and reflect amidst the artistic splendor.

The basilica is not just a place of worship; it serves as a cultural hub, embodying the historical significance of the Dominican Order in Malta. Here, you can delve into the history of the church and its role in the community, including its dedication to Porto Salvo, the protector of sailors. The serene ambiance makes it an ideal spot for contemplation, and the echoes of prayers and hymns resonate throughout its hallowed spaces.

At the end of our afternoon game drive at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya, we were treated to a stunning sunset. To me, this scene embodies every vision I had for a safari in Africa (and a majestic giraffe strode across the road also - see my Africa Album for that). The camera was in High Speed Continuous mode to capture every moment of this magnificent scene.

“For everything in this journey of life we are on, there is a right wing and a left wing: for the wing of love there is anger; for the wing of destiny there is fear; for the wing of pain there is healing; for the wing of hurt there is forgiveness; for the wing of pride there is humility; for the wing of giving there is taking; for the wing of tears there is joy; for the wing of rejection there is acceptance; for the wing of judgment there is grace; for the wing of honor there is shame; for the wing of letting go there is the wing of keeping. We can only fly with two wings and two wings can only stay in the air if there is a balance. Two beautiful wings is perfection. There is a generation of people who idealize perfection as the existence of only one of these wings every time. But I see that a bird with one wing is imperfect. An angel with one wing is imperfect. A butterfly with one wing is dead. So this generation of people strive to always cut off the other wing in the hopes of embodying their ideal of perfection, and in doing so, have created a crippled race.”

Ancient Kashi, previously known as Benares and now called Varanasi, remains one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities. This timeless city embodies enlightenment and liberation from the perpetual cycle of rebirth, driven by the force of karma.

In 1987, I had the privilege of visiting Varanasi and capturing this photograph of four rural women embarking on a sacred pilgrimage. They stand gracefully in front of one of the majestic temples (this one a mosque) that grace the shores of the sacred Ganges, a testament to the city's profound spiritual significance.

From my slide archives: the picture was originally photographed on Fuji Chrome film with my Nikon FE2 camera and 130mm lens. I photographed the slide bracketing it with a Nikon D850 camera and enhanced the picture in Lightroom, Photoshop, and Topaz.

Artist Statement

There is a celestial plane that exists far beyond Mother Earth called Sky World, where Hodinöhsö:ni’ people originated from. Guided by Reflections takes the form of the Hodinöhsö:ni’ sky dome symbolizing these two worlds.

Mother Earth is depicted as a wooden dome, embodying the ever-lasting life cycle and everything growing on earth. It is adorned with the sky dome design, which is commonly found in Hodinöhsö:ni’ beadwork, pottery and textiles.

Using augmented reality, the Celestial Tree grows from the top of the dome rendering a glimpse into Sky World, offering healing to the waters below. The reflections of Earth and Sky World on the water provide moments of pause and mindfulness.

Guided by Reflections is a reminder that everything in the natural world is interconnected and we have a collective responsibility to honour and care for these gifts to ensure the continuance of future generations.

Merton distinguishes two aspects of wisdom: . . . metaphysical and speculative, an apprehension of the radical structure of human life, an intellectual appreciation of man in his human potentialities and in their fruition. . . . moral, practical, and religious, an awareness of man’s life as a task to be undertaken at great risk, in which tragic failure and creative transcendence are both possible . . . a peculiar understanding of conflict, of the drama of human existence, and especially of the typical causes and signs of moral disaster . . . beyond the conscious and systematic moral principles which may be embodied in an ethical doctrine and which guide our conscious activity. Wisdom also supposes a certain intuitive grasp of unconscious motivations, at least insofar as these are embodied in archetypes and symbolic configurations of the psyche.

-The future of wisdom : toward a rebirth of sapiential Christianity / Bruno Barnhart ; foreword by Cynthia Bourgeault ; afterword by Cyprian Consiglio.

This particular plane was used for aerial photo-reconnaissance by the British over Europe in the period before WW2 broke out.

The colour is a strange shade of greeny blue that was supposed to make the aircraft less visible against the sky in some conditions - evidently not the deep blue of the May sky over Old Warden.

The centerpiece of his Brooklyn Museum show, titled “The opposite of the pedestal is the grave,”is a sculptural assemblage of a ladder, chicken wire, mop, and bedskirt whose sashaying shape recalls the moment a model spins around on the runway—or more broadly, embodies the less permanent instant when we nail a look.

This captivating photo encapsulates the exhilarating experience of swimming among sharks in their natural habitat. The graceful movement of these majestic creatures, coupled with the crystal-clear waters, creates a mesmerizing scene that embodies the beauty and wonder of the ocean. Hoisting her skirt as she crosses the stage, the performer embodies the allure of modern life that captivated artists at the beginning of the twentieth century. An amateur thespian and avid theater goer,Everett Shinn regularly depicted venues such as Keith's vaudeville theater,in which he emphasized the dramatic spectacle of the stage.Much like his contemporaries, including the French Impressionists Edgar Degas,Shinn imagined this scene from the angled vantage point of the audience-whose members he included in many of his canvases-testifying to his understanding of the theater as a social space.

A visit to Paraiso de Avedad near San Pablo city was truly enchanting. The resort masterfully intertwines the beauty of nature and gardens, the charm of history, and the splendor of architectural design. Encircled by verdant landscapes and stunning views, the resort genuinely embodies its name as a paradise. Currently, it serves as a delightful day-resort and a restaurant offering exquisite cuisine. Overnight stays are not available yet, but the warm and peaceful community welcomes all visitors with open arms.

The resort's deep historical roots are evident throughout, with ancient relics and artifacts narrating stories from the past. Strolling along the paths flanked by venerable trees, I felt an intense connection to history and nature. The architecture is a perfect fusion of classic and contemporary styles, resulting in an atmosphere that is both majestic and welcoming.

The blooming of cherry blossoms (sakura) at Shinto shrines, such as Fushimi Inari Taisha, is far more than spring decor—it embodies core Shinto ideals. Their fleeting bloom symbolizes mono no aware, a Japanese aesthetic concept (influenced by Buddhism but embraced in Shinto practices) that finds beauty in impermanence. This transience reminds us that nothing in life is eternal, yet its temporary nature holds profound value. In the brief life of each flower lies a lesson: to cherish the present and honor beauty that exists only in fleeting moments.

Spring’s cherry blossoms also mirror Shinto themes of renewal. As the season marks new beginnings, the blooms align metaphorically with purification rituals (harae) that cleanse the old to welcome the new. While Shinto purification formally uses water, salt, or paper streamers (shide), the sakura’s cyclical rebirth echoes this spiritual refreshment, reflecting nature’s endless cycle of death and regeneration.

In Shinto, cherry trees are not worshipped like shinboku (sacred trees such as cedars or cypresses, which house kami or spirits). Yet their blossoms, with their ethereal beauty, evoke the belief that kami dwell in all nature. Though not objects of direct veneration, sakura act as bridges between the human and divine. During hanami (flower viewing), their fragile splendor invites quiet reflection, gratitude, and awe for the interconnectedness of life.

Hanami, then, transcends mere aesthetic celebration. It becomes a meditative practice—an acknowledgment of life’s fragility and a tribute to nature’s wisdom. In their short-lived glory, cherry blossoms teach us to embrace impermanence, respect the natural world, and recognize the sacred in every season.
