Inaugurated on 24 October 1891.Located on former sea bed, the station building rests on 1,600 poles embedded into the ground. It was designed by architect Niels Peder Christian Holsøe in collaboration with Heinrich Wenck in a Neo-Renaissance style locally known as Rosenborg Style after Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen.

Koblenz - embedded in the UNESCO Upper Middle Rhine Valley World Heritage - is one of the most beautiful German cities. It is located at the confluence of the rivers Rhine an Mosel called "Deutsches Eck". More than 2000 years ago, the Romans called it „apud confluentes“, which stands for "at the coalescence".
The arch of history stretches from the Roman establishment to the modern times. Celts, Franconians, Merowingians and many others left their traces here. The rich culture, a fresh regional cuisine, the uncomplicated cordiality of the Rhine country and a the good Moselle wine make the singular flair of this city.

Borobudur is a 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist Temple in Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia. The monument consists of six square platforms topped by three circular platforms, and is decorated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. A main dome, located at the center of the top platform, is surrounded by 72 Buddha statues seated inside a perforated stupa.
Built in the 9th century during the reign of the Sailendra Dynasty, the temple's design in Gupta architecture reflects India's influence on the region. It also depicts the gupta style from India and shows influence of Buddhism as well as Hinduism. The monument is both a shrine to the Lord Buddha and a place for Buddhist pilgrimage. The journey for pilgrims begins at the base of the monument and follows a path around the monument and ascends to the top through three levels symbolic of Buddhist cosmology: Kāmadhātu (the world of desire), Rupadhatu (the world of forms) and Arupadhatu (the world of formlessness). The monument guides pilgrims through an extensive system of stairways and corridors with 1,460 narrative relief panels on the walls and the balustrades.
Evidence suggests Borobudur was constructed in the 9th century and abandoned following the 14th century decline of Hindu kingdoms in Java, and the Javanese conversion to Islam. Worldwide knowledge of its existence was sparked in 1814 by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, then the British ruler of Java, who was advised of its location by native Indonesians. Borobudur has since been preserved through several restorations. The largest restoration project was undertaken between 1975 and 1982 by the Indonesian government and UNESCO, following which the monument was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Borobudur is still used for pilgrimage; once a year Buddhists in Indonesia celebrate Vesak at the monument, and Borobudur is Indonesia's single most visited tourist attraction.
There is no written record of who built Borobudur or of its intended purpose. The construction time has been estimated by comparison between carved reliefs on the temple's hidden foot and the inscriptions commonly used in royal charters during the 8th and 9th centuries. Borobudur was likely founded around 800 CE. This corresponds to the period between 760 and 830 CE, the peak of the Sailendra dynasty in central Java, when it was under the influence of the Srivijayan Empire. The construction has been estimated to have taken 75 years and been completed during the reign of Samaratungga in 825.
There is confusion between Hindu and Buddhist rulers in Java around that time. The Sailendras were known as ardent followers of Buddhism, though stone inscriptions found at Sojomerto suggest they may have been Hindus. It was during this time that many Hindu and Buddhist monuments were built on the plains and mountains around the Kedu Plain. The Buddhist monuments, including Borobudur, were erected around the same time as the Hindu Shiva Prambanan temple compound. In 732 CE, the Shivaite King Sanjaya commissioned a Shivalinga sanctuary to be built on the Wukir hill, only 10 km east of Borobudur.
Construction of Buddhist temples, including Borobudur, at that time was possible because Sanjaya's immediate successor, Rakai Panangkaran, granted his permission to the Buddhist followers to build such temples. In fact, to show his respect, Panangkaran gave the village of Kalasan to the Buddhist community, as is written in the Kalasan Charter dated 778 CE. This has led some archaeologists to believe that there was never serious conflict concerning religion in Java as it was possible for a Hindu king to patronize the establishment of a Buddhist monument; or for a Buddhist king to act likewise. However, it is likely that there were two rival royal dynasties in Java at the time—the Buddhist Sailendra and the Saivite Sanjaya—in which the latter triumphed over their rival in the 856 battle on the Ratubaka plateau. This confusion also exists regarding the Lara Jonggrang temple at the Prambanan complex, which was believed that it was erected by the victor Rakai Pikatan as the Sanjaya dynasty's reply to Borobudur, but others suggest that there was a climate of peaceful coexistence where Sailendra involvement exists in Lara Jonggrang.
Borobudur lay hidden for centuries under layers of volcanic ash and jungle growth. The facts behind its abandonment remain a mystery. It is not known when active use of the monument and Buddhist pilgrimage to it ceased. Sometime between 928 and 1006, King Mpu Sindok moved the capital of the Medang Kingdom to the region of East Java after a series of volcanic eruptions; it is not certain whether this influenced the abandonment, but several sources mention this as the most likely period of abandonment. The monument is mentioned vaguely as late as ca. 1365, in Mpu Prapanca's Nagarakretagama written during Majapahit era and mentioning "the vihara in Budur". Soekmono (1976) also mentions the popular belief that the temples were disbanded when the population converted to Islam in the 15th century.
The monument was not forgotten completely, though folk stories gradually shifted from its past glory into more superstitious beliefs associated with bad luck and misery. Two old Javanese chronicles (babad) from the 18th century mention cases of bad luck associated with the monument. According to the Babad Tanah Jawi (or the History of Java), the monument was a fatal factor for Mas Dana, a rebel who revolted against Pakubuwono I, the king of Mataram in 1709. It was mentioned that the "Redi Borobudur" hill was besieged and the insurgents were defeated and sentenced to death by the king. In the Babad Mataram (or the History of the Mataram Kingdom), the monument was associated with the misfortune of Prince Monconagoro, the crown prince of the Yogyakarta Sultanate in 1757. In spite of a taboo against visiting the monument, "he took what is written as the knight who was captured in a cage (a statue in one of the perforated stupas)". Upon returning to his palace, he fell ill and died one day later.
Lieutenant Governor-General Thomas Stamford Raffles took great interest in the history of Java. He collected Javanese antiques and made notes through contacts with local inhabitants during his tour throughout the island. On an inspection tour to Semarang in 1814, he was informed about a big monument deep in a jungle near the village of Bumisegoro. He was not able to make the discovery himself and sent H.C. Cornelius, a Dutch engineer, to investigate. In two months, Cornelius and his 200 men cut down trees, burned down vegetation and dug away the earth to reveal the monument. Due to the danger of collapse, he could not unearth all galleries. He reported his findings to Raffles including various drawings. Although the discovery is only mentioned by a few sentences, Raffles has been credited with the monument's recovery, as one who had brought it to the world's attention.
The Dutch East Indies government then commissioned F.C. Wilsen, a Dutch engineering official, who studied the monument and drew hundreds of relief sketches. J.F.G. Brumund was also appointed to make a detailed study of the monument, which was completed in 1859.
Borobudur attracted attention in 1885. The restoration was carried out between 1907 and 1911. Due to the limited budget, the restoration had been primarily focused on cleaning the sculptures, and Van Erp did not solve the drainage problem. Within fifteen years, the gallery walls were sagging and the reliefs showed signs of new cracks and deterioration. Van Erp used concrete from which alkali salts and calcium hydroxide leached and were transported into the rest of the construction. This caused some problems, so that a further thorough renovation was urgently needed.
In 1973, a master plan to restore Borobudur was created. The Indonesian government and UNESCO then undertook the complete overhaul of the monument in a big restoration project between 1975 and 1982. The foundation was stabilized and all 1,460 panels were cleaned. The restoration involved the dismantling of the five square platforms and improved the drainage by embedding water channels into the monument. Both impermeable and filter layers were added. This colossal project involved around 600 people to restore the monument and cost a total of US$ 6,901,243. After the renovation was finished, UNESCO listed Borobudur as a World Heritage Site in 1991. It is listed under Cultural criteria "to represent a masterpiece of human creative genius", "to exhibit an important interchange of human values, over a span of time or within a cultural area of the world, on developments in architecture or technology, monumental arts, town-planning or landscape design", and "to be directly or tangibly associated with events or living traditions, with ideas, or with beliefs, with artistic and literary works of outstanding universal significance".
Borobudur contains approximately 2,670 individual bas reliefs (1,460 narrative and 1,212 decorative panels), which cover the façades and balustrades. The total relief surface is 2,500 square metres and they are distributed at the hidden foot and the five square platforms.
The narrative panels, which tell the story of Sudhana and Manohara,[69] are grouped into 11 series encircled the monument with the total length of 3,000 metres (9,800 ft). The hidden foot contains the first series with 160 narrative panels and the remaining 10 series are distributed throughout walls and balustrades in four galleries starting from the eastern entrance stairway to the left. Narrative panels on the wall read from right to left, while on the balustrade read from left to right. This conforms with pradaksina, the ritual of circumambulation performed by pilgrims who move in a clockwise direction while keeping the sanctuary to their right.[70]
The hidden foot depicts the workings of karmic law. The walls of the first gallery have two superimposed series of reliefs; each consists of 120 panels. The upper part depicts the biography of the Buddha, while the lower part of the wall and also balustrades in the first and the second galleries tell the story of the Buddha's former lives. The remaining panels are devoted to Sudhana's further wandering about his search, terminated by his attainment of the Perfect Wisdom.
Apart from the story of the Buddhist cosmology carved in stone, Borobudur has many statues of various Buddhas. The cross-legged statues are seated in a lotus position and distributed on the five square platforms (the Rupadhatu level) as well as on the top platform (the Arupadhatu level).
The Buddha statues are in niches at the Rupadhatu level, arranged in rows on the outer sides of the balustrades, the number of statues decreasing as platforms progressively diminish to the upper level. The first balustrades have 104 niches, the second 104, the third 88, the fourth 72 and the fifth 64. In total, there are 432 Buddha statues at the Rupadhatu level. At the Arupadhatu level (or the three circular platforms), Buddha statues are placed inside perforated stupas. The first circular platform has 32 stupas, the second 24 and the third 16, that add up to 72 stupas. Of the original 504 Buddha statues, over 300 are damaged (mostly headless) and 43 are missing (since the monument's discovery, heads have been stolen as collector's items, mostly by Western museums).
At first glance, all the Buddha statues appear similar, but there is a subtle difference between them in the mudras or the position of the hands. There are five groups of mudra: North, East, South, West and Zenith, which represent the five cardinal compass points according to Mahayana. The first four balustrades have the first four mudras: North, East, South and West, of which the Buddha statues that face one compass direction have the corresponding mudra. Buddha statues at the fifth balustrades and inside the 72 stupas on the top platform have the same mudra: Zenith. Each mudra represents one of the Five Dhyani Buddhas; each has its own symbolism.
Today's HA blog post had a great technique by Jennifer... using white ink on a silhouette stamp on Kraft card. I thought I'd give it a go.... but don't have a good white ink... I only have a dew drop pad of Brilliance and it didn't cover very well... but I decided to go ahead and colour the bluebells then decided to try and embedded emboss on it. Okay.... but not one of my best!
My current home server - a DIR-320 running Debian off a usb flash drive. The router's console port is connected to a serial level shifter, in turn connected to a serial to usb converter - all my
PT&P designed and manufactured two 240" x 12" x 1/2" Embed Plates with 3/4" diameter weld-stud projections to be used in a concrete reinforcement application. All components are fabricated out of carbon steel with a hot-dipped galvanized finish. The plates were shaped to form a 45" x 90" frame prior to shipment. The frames were braced with 2" x 2" x 1/4" angles to ensure the frame maintained its structural shape prior to installation.
This one is not too different from the earlier one but there are some subtle changes like the clock's font and wallpaper etc.

2016 Weekly Alphabet Challenge, week 5, E for Embedded
We were in Houston, Texas this week and I've been on the lookout for something embedded all week.I did find several things but in the end I chose this one, captured at George Bush Intercontinental Airport yesterday on our way back to Europe. What could be more Texan than a rodeo bull paired with the Texas flag. The bull is half 3D, coming out of the wall, by the way I think the cactus was real!

NEoN is bringing the Travelling Gallery to town, Day of Access exhibition will pop up in various locations across the city.
Travelling Gallery is delighted to be working with Alec Finlay to support Day of Access, a powerful campaign which encourages estates to open their land to allow access for people affected by disability. By using hill tracks and four-wheel drives, people who have never been able to immerse themselves in wild nature are driven into the heart Scotland’s beautiful wild landscape.
The Day of Access campaign passionately believes that everyone should have the opportunity to experience wild nature. Travelling Gallery will act as the campaign bus touring Day of Access across Scotland; presenting information and artworks and allowing a space for discussions. Documentation from the pilot Day of Access, including work by young photographer Sam McDiarmid, will be exhibited in an art installation created by Finlay.
The themes of disability, access and ecological remediation are explored in Finlay’s poems and artwork. Pages from books exploring illness, pain, walking and healing, including A View from the Front Line by Maggie Keswick Jencks, are used as paper for thoughtful drawings and commanding words “THERE CAN NEVER BE AN EXCESS OF ACCESS”.
Alongside his own work Alec has invited other artists and poets to exhibit including Hannah Devereaux, Alison Lloyd, Ken Cockburn and Mhairi Law; each bringing their own creativity and experience to the project. The work is collaboratively displayed like a scrap book or diary pinned on a garden trellis, alongside other domestic apparatus and soft furnishings, such as blankets, a clothes horse, and hankies.
About the Artist:
Alec Finlay (Scotland, 1966) is an internationally-recognised artist and poet whose work crosses over a range of media and forms. Much of Finlay’s work considers how we as a culture, or cultures, relate to landscape and ecology. Through permanent and temporary interventions, integrative web-based projects, and publications, Finlay weaves together generous experiential works, often collaborative, sometimes mapped directly onto the landscape, embedded socially or accessed online. Recently Finlay’s work has focussed on place-awareness and ecopoetics.

"The Quiet and Ugly Artist (Hanoi, 1965-2015)", An art installation by Daniel Kerkhoff at Chaap Art, 82 Đê Quai Street, Tây Hồ District, Hanoi. October 3rd to October 11th,, 2015. Opening reception, October 3rd, 6-9pm.
An installation based on Daniel Kerkhoff's self-imposed artist-in-residency in Hanoi from February 6th to October 26th. It is part of a larger project which includes residencies in Ghana and Ecuador. Embedded in a community for just under nine months, the human gestation period, premature, a gradual, a creative process,
an exploration, noticing, weaving, sharing, and witnessing, connection, disconnection, a journal, found sculptures, painting, photographs, videos, documenting, collections, keepsakes, collages, receipts and brochures, maps, business cards and consumer packaging, consumed and consuming, souvenirs,
walking, discovering, travel, a paper trail, colonize, appropriate, trophies, convoluted, cover-ups, muddy, history, memory, remnants, experience, lost, absorbed, traces, vague, melding, a buried presence, fading, rotting, germinating, misunderstanding, forgotten, pollination, rejuvenation, impermanence, transformation.

This is a photograph from the second running of the Athlone Flatline Half Marathon ("The Flatline") was held at Athlone, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Saturday 14th September 2013 at 11:00. There was beautiful weather for the event which started and finished at St. Aloysius College near the Canal Banks area of the town just slightly west of the River Shannon. This event was professionally organised and the very flat course meant that many runners both seasoned and new to the scene achieved season or personal bests. Almost 1,000 participants successfully completed the event in the beautiful September sunshine. Everyone involved must be congratulated for the flawless running of the event. This event is sure to go from strength to strength over the coming years. The "Flatline" also included an option for a full marathon which was fully supported by the Marathon Club of Ireland and the East of Ireland Marathon Series. This allowed participants to run the Flatline twice for the qualifying marathon distance. About 80 people took part.

Overall Race Summary
Participants: Such is the popularity of the race this year that registration closed for the race in mid-August 2013. There were well over 1,000 participants who took to the start line.
Weather: The weather on the day was almost perfect for running. The runners were bathed in warm September sunshine for the duration of the race and into the early afternoon. In the sections of the race out towards Clonown and around the Bord na Mona areas there was a stiff breeze but nothing major.
Course: "The Flatline" ceratinly lived up to its name. It is as flat a course as one is likely to find. A garmin connect gps trace of the route is provided here [connect.garmin.com/activity/199678412] Geographically the course spends much of the race in County Roscommon with only the first and last kilometers actually in County Westmeath. This gives geographically inclined runners the novel opportunity to race in two Irish provinces in one race. The course had distance markers at every kilometre and mile along the way. There were official pacers provided by the race organisers.

Refreshments: An Alkohol Frei bottle of Erdinger was provided to every finisher as they crossed the line. Light refreshments were served.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. The Eternal Flame Falls. The flame, embedded in a grotto behind the falls (on 18 Mile Creek) has reportedly burned for hundreds of years. The local Native Americans reportedly knew about this place and showed it ti the colonists who arrived after the Revolutionary War.
The rocks are very porous shale that contain a large amount of natural gas (methane) from decaying algae and organisms that died hundreds of millions of years ago. The area has been repeatedly flooded over millions of years and one can sea in the strata the seafloors of long gone inland seas. The high natural gas content This colossal amount of gas is also the reason for using the environmentally damaging hydraulic fracturing (fracking) to liberate the gas from between the rock layers. This area has a long history of providing natural gas. This gas seep seems to be a happy accident of nature, a fracture, perhaps caused by a small earthquake opened a small pocket of gas that has burned like a pilot light for hundreds of years.
The Native legends say that it was initially ignited by a lightning strike. Certainly plausible but probably apocryphal. In fact I I have been to the site when the flame was out and people brought lighters to reignite it. Either way it burns most of the time and as is seen in these pictures the waterfall freezes over, except for the little grotto that becomes like little temple for the flame. It is pretty neat to see it burning away while ice surrounds it and water pours over it. In fact as I am writing this it is now dark and I can imagine the faint, flickering orange glow it it must impart to the ice. It'd be fantastic to see it at night shining through and being scattered and diffracted by the ice and water. However it is a moderate hike, No real danger but it requires navigating broken ice, small tracks on frozen goat paths and scrambles over piles of trees. Probably it isn't such as safe place to hike at night..not to mention illegal. In the last few years at least three people have died trying to scale the sides of the ravine and the waterfall. People don't respect the place and decide they are going to climb the steep loose sides and lose their footing and fall to their death. Most people are not conscientious nor skilled hikers and while this isn't the hardest or most challenging hikes it does require surefooted-ness and awareness since there is a river that can be quite raging and ravine walls that seem like a climbing gym with all the roots and rock layers. The top of the ravine is about 100 feet, but as OSHA rightly points out most serious injuries and deaths are caused by falls less than 6 feet in height. Also, while "Stupid is as stupid does" ultimately rescuers then put their lives at risk to rescue these people, not to mention the high to taxpayers.
Finally speaking of the ravine it is formed where 18 Mile Creek has slowly but relentlessly sawed through the countryside and the vastly more ancient rock layers. The waves and wiggles of the river decided by the harness of the stone and the ease of movement around macro objects. The falls happens to be the edge of a glacial ledge, where bedrock was broken and heaved up by the weight of 1 mile of ice piled up upon the land. This is much like this stream's big cousin the Niagara Niagara river which flows over the Niagara Escarpment giving us Niagara Falls just north of us. Around the time if the end of the the last ice age about 10,000 years ago the creek has abraded its way through the soft shale creating the ravines that are such a feature of western NY landscapes. Particles of sand, organic matter, rocks and of course ice, pried away and dissolved by the flowing water have grain by grain chiseled away at the rock. So We don't have mountains but there are plenty of ravines...think of Watkins Glen in the finger lakes or the Gorges in Ithaca. This is one more, but with a little flame temple at the end.
You can see, from this photograph, how the layers of caliche were layed down with a mixture of material, including all sorts of petrified wood, agate, flint and other types of rock - it is not hard to dig rocks out of this mixture, which is the material they put on their county roads.
