The massive elephant parents at the Melbourne Zoo. These ones stand so much higher than the young ones
These elephants were feeding on young trees & shrubs, flattening the thorns with their feet and then devouring branches whole.
I was looking forward to going to the elephant orphanage at Pinnawala near Kandy. I am an animal lover and was a bit surprised by some of the things I saw. Instead of showing just the touristy shots though I will present it as I saw it.

This huge elephant was waiting at the wharf to greet us when we got back after our boat trip from the island where we saw the lions and leopard.
I suspect that this might be 'Gandalph'.

This photo has now been used to illustrate an article written to publisize the destruction of the rainforest in Sabah and the threat this poses to the wildlife of the region, some of it rare and endemic.
The Elephant Nature Park was created by a thai woman called Lek back in the 90’s after she grew tired of watching the elephants dissapearing.She started out with 4 elephants that she bought from local logging companies, and found a piece of land that the elephants could live on.Check out my travelblog at www.175days.no
