The Denver Zoo has a new elephant exhibit that was still in the preview stages when we visited. The zookeepers were feeding this elephant treats and answering questions from the crowd. The elephant was having a blast walking in and out of the water. Twice he completely submerged himself in the pool.
The Indian elephant (Elephas maximus indicus) is one of three recognized subspecies of the Asian elephant, and native to mainland Asia. Since 1986, Elephas maximus has been listed as endangered by IUCN as the population has declined by at least 50% over the last three generations, estimated to be 60–75 years. The species is pre-eminently threatened by habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation.

June 3, 2021: During my trip up to Paso Robles, I had to stop and check on the elephant seals at Piedras Blancas seal rookery north of San Simeon, California. Lots of animals present, but not much activity. The elephant seal colony at Point Piedras Blancas started with a single pup born in February 1992. Currently, the colony contains about 25,000 elephant seals along the eight-mile stretch of coastline.
