First Grade. Northwestern Elementary, Crabapple, GA. Mrs. Hamilton was a kick-ass teacher and the first black woman i really knew well. I remember being so EXCITED to learn in her class, and to be in reading groups, and read all the Dick and Jane stuff. We also had the SRA cards, where you could learn at your own pace and check off the ones you had completed. Total great sense of accomplishment.

Northwestern always had a great fair every year, with cakewalks (real cakes!) and a pony ride, and goldfish you take home in a baggie. We only had one first grade class. Pretty much everyone also went to my church.

it was an old school, prob. 1930s or so, and it had the nice touches - heavy wooden doors and chalkboards with wooden racks for chalk and coat-rooms and all that.

We also learned "The Ghost of John" in music and I still think it's an awesome halloween song.

They tore it down about ten years ago and it was a damn sad day.

Interestingly enough, Sassy from FlatIron's husband Casey went there too, and his brother and my cousin (who lived across the street from me) were good friends. Small world. Go Mustangs!

Pacific View Elementary School was closed a number of years ago due to changing demographics in its coastal Encinitas neighborhood. It's been vacant - and deteriorating - ever since, as the school district and community debate the site's future.
