Hackberry Elementary School — Oct. 2007

just off Route 66, the hackberry elementary school is "a quite ornate Mission-style building with red roof tiles, two tiny decorative towers and even a Spanish-style bell."

Immaginate..

siete seduti davanti all'Oceano Atlantico, infinito ed agitato.

A co-worker of mine asked if I would take some photos of a local elementary school that is having a fundraiser book developed ... and wanted some captures for the booklet.

Took advantage of the wet blue hour conditions figuring it would be better than the just drab gray wintry view that would be normal in the middle of the day.

The original elementary school burned down, and remnants can be seen here in the arch that remains. Used one of the large trees in front of the school to help frame the scene.

Richard and I have been playing in the studio again this weekend, which always results in silliness

The tiny town of Steptoe, Washington still uses this wonderful old school building.

I am continuing to document our summer camping trip.

I think as photographers we all strive to take a picture which is "different" however, when the sunrise and geology come together conveniently, it's best to just follow the rules and go along with nature.

I got up this morning, not really expecting much as the skies were quite clear, but having checked out the tide I knew there would be some interesting rocks out at Hauxley. On the long drive up, I passed under a large cloud so made a mental note to shoot in that direction.

In the end, the cloud lit up nicely as the sun rose, providing some lovely orange and pink tones, and the geology, as always, provided some great lead in lines.

My very small, very funny students

My entry for the New Elementary Lego House Competition, where contestants have to come up with their own design of the new LEGO brand experience center/museum, that is currently being built in Billund, in under 250 bricks. (246 bricks in this model)

My version is called A Hundred Million Ways after the number of ways one can stack six 2x4 Lego bricks on top of each other (102,981,504). The building consists of six two-story segments in the shape of bricks that are stacked in one of those many ways. Not the the most interesting way, sure, but a way that would actually provide enough architectural stability. A rigid interior column (right next to the transparent elevators) runs from the bottom up through all six segments. So the building is basically a slim, square tower with bits hanging over to various sides.

I dismissed the urge to make the segments look exactly like bricks, with primary colors and studs. At a hight of twelve stories, this building would probably be one of, if not the tallest buildings in Billund. Having it look like a giant toy just didn't seem appropriate from an urban planning perspective. Plus, plastic buildings have a way of looking ugly in real life.

Instead, I went with what is supposed to be a modern scandinavian style of wooden facades and glass panels. As LEGO's roots lay in carpentry, this isn't even off topic. To give visitors some added value to their experience, the building has a green roof atop the third segment. The fifth segment is almost entirely glass and gives visitors a spectacular view over the town, including the factories and Legoland.

It appears the cab-end truck on Lehigh Valley C420 #411 has picked a switch point, thereby dragging the two adjacent locomotives off the rails as well.

And check out the guy on the right with the radio glaring my way! He seems to be trying to fog the film in my camera with that stare. They couldn't throw me out, because I wasn't on railroad property.

Best viewed LARGE!
