Today is National Technology Day -- a day we photographers and Flickr users should appreciate.
Fittingly, today also kicks off the International Consumer Electronics Show.
The photo shows part of a board that controls a bioreactor -- also a wonderful piece of technology.
I think next year, in observance of this day, someone show give me a fully functional TARDIS. :-)
Digital storage adapt0r. This Thurlby DSA524 will turn my 1970s Hewlett-Packard oscilloscope into a 1980s digital storage oscilloscope.
The bandwidth is 5MHz, which will allow me to see the rise and fall of waveforms produced by 1970s digital electronics fairly clearly.
It also has tons of buttons and red LEDs and beeps when you switch it on.
Oh and an interface port that allows you to connect it to a BBC Master Microcomputer.

The Photokina (rendered in the promoters' branding as photokina) is the world's largest trade fair for the photographic and imaging industries. The first Photokina was held in Cologne, Germany, in 1950, and it is now held biennially in September at the koelnmesse Trade Fair and Exhibition Centre. Many photographic and imaging companies introduce and showcase state of the art imaging products at Photokina. The show has two main competitors, both annual shows held in different parts of the world. The CP+ show in Yokohama, Japan, originally the Japan Camera Show, has been held since the early 1960s. In the U.S., the main photography show is PMA@CES, which since 2012 has coincided with the International CES consumer electronics show in Las Vegas.

Cologne (English pronunciation: /kəˈloʊn/, German: Köln [kœln] ( listen), Colognian: Kölle [ˈkœɫə] ( listen)) is Germany's fourth-largest city (after Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich), and is the largest city both in the German Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia and within the Rhine-Ruhr Metropolitan Area, one of the major European metropolitan areas with more than ten million inhabitants.
Cologne is located on both sides of the Rhine River. The city's famous Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) is the seat of the Catholic Archbishop of Cologne. The University of Cologne (Universität zu Köln) is one of Europe's oldest and largest universities.[2]
Cologne was founded and established in the first century AD, as the Roman Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium in Ubii territory.[3] It was the capital of the Roman province of Germania Inferior and the headquarters of the military in the region until occupied by the Franks in 462. During the Middle Ages it flourished as one of the most important major trade routes between east and west in Europe. Cologne was one of the leading members of the Hanseatic League and one of the largest cities north of the Alps in medieval and renaissance times. Up until World War II the city had undergone several other occupations by the French and also the British. Cologne was one of the most heavily bombed cities in Germany during World War II. The bombing reduced the population by 95% and destroyed almost the entire city. With the intention of restoring as many historic buildings as possible, the rebuilding has resulted in a very mixed and unique cityscape.
Cologne is a major cultural centre for the Rhineland; it is home to more than thirty museums and hundreds of galleries. Exhibitions range from local ancient Roman archeological sites to contemporary graphics and sculpture. The Cologne Trade Fair hosts a number of trade shows such as Art Cologne, imm Cologne, Gamescom, and the Photokina.

Liège (French pronunciation: [ljɛʒ]; Dutch: Luik, [lœyk] ( listen); Walloon: Lidje; German: Lüttich; Latin: Leodium; Limburgish: Luuk; Luxembourgish: Léck) is a major city and a municipality in the European country of Belgium. It is located in the province of the same name, Liège, of which it is the capital and is part of the Walloon (French-speaking) region of Belgium.
The city is situated in the valley of the Meuse River, in the east of Belgium, not far from borders with the Netherlands and with Germany. At Liège the Meuse river meets the river Ourthe. The city is part of the sillon industriel, the former industrial backbone of Wallonia. It still is the principal economic and cultural centre of the region.
The Liège municipality (i.e. the city proper) includes the former communes of Angleur, Bressoux, Chênée, Glain, Grivegnée, Jupille-sur-Meuse, Rocourt, and Wandre. In November 2012, Liège had 198,280 inhabitants. The metropolitan area, including the outer commuter zone, covers an area of 1,879 km2 (725 sq mi) and had a total population of 749,110 on 1 January 2008.[2][3] This includes a total of 52 municipalities, among others, Herstal and Seraing. Liège ranks as the third most populous urban area in Belgium, after Brussels and Antwerp, and the fourth municipality after Antwerp, Ghent and Charleroi.[3]

Station Luik-Guillemins (Frans: Liège-Guillemins) is het belangrijkste spoorwegstation van de stad Luik. Het station ligt op het einde van verschillende spoorlijnen. In reizigersaantallen is dit het op tien na drukste station in België en het op twee na drukste station van Wallonië, na Ottignies en Namen (reizigerstelling 2009)[2].
Het station is genoemd naar de wijk Guillemins, waarin het ligt. Deze wijk is op zijn beurt weer genoemd naar de kloosterorde van de Wilhelmieten, die daar in 1287 een klooster stichtte.

Quick implementation of an inclinometer with a 3 axis accelerometer on Arduino. It's a 3g model, which is a bit of overkill for this application.
I'll combine this with the electronic compass to compensate for inclination AND get an absolute heading measurement. I don't think I'll need the gyros.
I've since combined this with my Arduino-to-RC-Transmitter hack to control two servos remotely based on the inclination of the Arduino. Aim? Head motion tracking to pan a camera remotely.
Alternative to other CSC offerings, this capable camera made by the most evolving electronics company is a interesting offering now, when the NX300 is here. Large APS-C sensor with usable ISO 3200, easy handling, very solid build, many functions for both amateur and advanced photographers, full controls, WiFi connectivity, 8 fps, and very good lenses. The 18-55 is really nice, and firmware modifications made the auto focus faster and raw files smaller. Now when the production life of the NX210 comes to an end, some local resellers run crazy and the price is falling like a stone - I found this one for $250 with some benefits. For that money it´s a quite powerful and handy camera.
A severe case of lens fungus, this one can't be cleaned. It's the model of which the front elements are glued together, and the fungus is right between them.....

We have a new park/playground in town and this is one of the most popular games. The kids run around hitting the buttons on the posts and rack up scores.

Originally Welta was a German camera maker based in Freital. It made a number of medium-priced folders before World War II, and its camera production was quite comparable to Balda and Certo. It also introduced two folding TLRs, the 6×6 Perfekta and the 6×9 Superfekta.
After the war Welta continued production with a range evolved from the prewar models in East Germany as a state company, VEB Welta-Kamera-Werk. It became a part of the large VEB Kamera- und Kinowerk Dresden in 1959, a state owned conglomerate of East-German cameramakers that was to become VEB Pentacon in 1964.
The original Weltax had the advance button on the bottom, while most post-war items have it on top. Weltax was available with many various lens and shutter combinations.
Due to the high demand for cameras and to increase production, part of the manufacturing was shifted to VEB Rheinmetall.
The Tempor was an East Germany made shutter. It seems to be a copy of Prontor S range and it was a sturdy and reliable shutter.
Here is Rheinmetall Weltax identical with original Welta Weltax.
Rheinmetall is better known for cannons than for cameras but after WWII they made or perhaps rather assembled cameras like the Exa and Exakta and this Weltax.

Sigma legt das Attribut "macro" hier recht großzügig aus. Ein Abbildungsmaßstab von 1:4,5 gilt bei strengen Interpreten des Begriffes "macro" noch nicht als makrofähig. Sei's drum. Mit einer Naheinstellgrenze von 22 cm lassen sich auch schon recht hübsche Nahaufnahmen machen.
Ansonsten schneidet das Objektiv (7 Linsen in 6 Gruppen) bei Besprechungen recht gut ab, hervorgehoben wird das günstige Preis/Leistungsverhältnis als Gebrauchtlinse. Ich selbst habe es als Beigabe bekommen und bei meinen nicht so hohen Ansprüchen genügt mir die optische Qualität bei weitem.

Space was limited in my room so I decided long ago to remove my bed and build a lofted setup.
I do a lot of tinkering so I built in a U shaped desk that extends more or less around the full perimeter of my room with lots of space to work on things. My desktop setup lies directly underneath my bed and on the opposite side I have a soldering/electronics station.
I recently underwent a few hardware upgrades for my desktop which include a liquid cooled 6 core, 64 gb RAM custom machine and 3x 27" Achieva Shimian Korean IPS displays. These are mounted to the wall with monitor arms and can be pulled closer to the edge of the table if needed. The setup works really well for my 3d modeling and coding work.
They are also backlit by a RGB LED strip powered by an Arduino R3 and Python based client on the desktop which changes color according to the color on the screens. I find that it helps a lot with eye strain and adds a great ambiance to the room.
