Security officials keep watch on the roof of the White House as a crowd gathers on Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington, DC on election day evening.

Authorities and shop owners continue to prepare for election day protests as the final hours of the 2020 election come to an end. Security measures were in place and people began to gather on Black Lives Matter Plaza and around the DC area.

As a boy I collected newspapers that I thought might be historical, and I still have them. Like many Americans at the time, I had heard of Persia but did not give much thought to it, or even know that it was called Iran.

The revolution 30 years ago thrust Iran into our conciousness in a frightening way. These headlines in the Washington Post were, for many of us, our first introduction to Iran.

As the years went by, I came to meet and work with many Iranians who came to this country. It became readily apparent that the Iranian people are not always like the leaders, just as it must be apparent to people elsewhere that the people of the US are not always like the leaders.

I decided to pull these papers out tonight and take this picture along with a green shirt to show support for the Iranian people.

A quorum of Cullman County volunteer fire departments met tonight at the Cullman County Board of Education building along Arnold Street NE in the City of Cullman tonight.

In addition to conducting their monthly association meeting, fire department leaders gathered to hold their annual election naming various officers of the Cullman County Fire Association to serve for the upcoming calendar year of 2017.

Nominations were made for the offices of President, 1st Vice-President, 2nd Vice-President, Secretary-Treasurer and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) officer.

Jamie Barber of Regional Medical Services, Inc. was honored to be the master of ceremonies and impartial third-party election official.

The following officers were unanimously elected by the fire department leaders in attendance:

• Joe Golden – President (Baileyton)

• David Scott – 1st Vice-President (Good Hope)

• Brett Rodgers – 2nd Vice-President (Sardis)

• Toby Bates – Secretary & Treasurer (Logan)

• Jeff Byars – EMS Officer (at-large)

All of the above are incumbents who were re-elected … except Bates who will be a first-time officer of the Association.

We spoke with Chief Bates immediately after the vote:

“I am very grateful to be nominated. To actually be elected is both humbling and a great opportunity. My predecessor Jerome Speegle did an excellent job in this role. I have some big shoes to fill. But, I am ready. This Association has been working towards updating our By-Laws. With everyone’s agreement, my first priority will be to finish that work and have the Cullman County Fire Association By-Laws updated to 2017 standards.”

Trimble Fire Chief Jerome Speegle was the previous Secretary & Treasurer of the organization.

President Joe Golden had these comments after the meeting:

“I am honored to be re-elected to serve as President of this organization. Serving as President of an Association that unifies 26 separate fire and EMS department across Cullman County is a very big job. Nonetheless, leading this selfless group of men and woman who are so deeply committed to ensuring every citizens’ public safety needs brings me great satisfaction personally. I also have a great deal of pride for people who routinely risk their own well-being to serve the public, often in those citizens’ time of greatest crisis and stress. We all do it as 100% volunteers with no expectation of financial income or gain. Being part of that special group of human beings makes all the work worthwhile.”
