Mingus Mill, on the North Carolina side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, is a prime example of late 19th century engineering efficiency.

While nearly all mills have a millrace (seen here) channeling water from a stream to a mill-wheel, this mill channels the water into a penstock, which is a tall shaft of water maintained at a constant pressure to turn a turbine at the end of a pipe at the base of the shaft. The turbine is attached to the grinding stones; and, in this case, generates about 11hp at 400 rpm - pretty solid for its day!

The turbine is more efficient than a water wheel, which typically sits in water itself and has some back-pressure, and significant losses in the turn cycle.

The mill was an important hub in frontier life. Typically, families would bring their grains on Saturday for the miller to ground into flour. The miller would take a portion as payment (typically around 1/8) and might sell it to other users or customers who were conducting other bartering business in the nearby open spaces.

This mill, on the Mingus Creek, was built in 1886 and operated daily until 1930s when the NPS bought the land to make this Great Smoky Mountains NP. The NPS restored the mill to operational status in 1968, and it is used to demonstrate frontier life to visitors daily. While it is still fully functional, the grain milled here can not be sold for consumption because the resulting flour has been touched by so many tourists that it cannot be USDA approved.

As far as I can tell, sea otters have a well-refined process for eating crabs: (1) eat the legs first, so it can't run away (2) snap off and eat the claws second, so they won't pinch your face (3) pop off the carapace to eat all the insides and (4) rinse and repeat with new crabs until naptime. Train travel is often considered the most civilised mode of transportation because it combines comfort, efficiency, and environmental friendliness in a uniquely human way. Unlike cramped air planes or stressful car journeys, trains offer spacious seating, freedom to move around, and the opportunity to relax, read, or work while watching the landscape unfold. The rhythmic motion and quiet hum encourage reflection and conversation, fostering a sense of calm rarely found in modern travel. Moreover, trains connect city centres directly, avoiding the chaos of airports and long security lines, making the entire experience more dignified and enjoyable.

The Krafla geothermal power plant Krafla geothermal power plant is a geothermal, which is located in Iceland, close to the Krafla Volcano and the lake Mývatn. It is considered to be Iceland´s largest power station with its 33 boreholes and is able to produce 500 GWh of electricity annually with its installed capacity of 60 MW (2 x 30 megawatt).

The construction work started in 1974, but due to volcanic activities in the area, the building was slowed down. The Krafla power station was officially launched in the early 1977, but was only able to produce at its full efficiency of 60 megawatt after a second steam turbine was installed in 1996. Originally the power plant was owned by the government, but was purchased in 1985 and has since been operated by Landsvirkjun (National Power Company). About 15 employees work there full-time.

This friendly young lady works in a wonderful little restaurant in Murano. The restaurant was crowded when we arrived and we had to wait about 15 minutes for a table - which is OK with a glass of white wine at the bar. After us, the queue got even longer. She worked with maximum efficiency but remained totally relaxed and friendly, she even had time to pose for a photo at the end. Unfortunately I messed up the shot, you can see the reason in the EXIF data. With a lot of post-processing, I consider the picture nevertheless presentable, the motif is beyond any doubt anyway. However, I could also claim that I succeeded in showing her working pace and her inner peace in one picture.

When the war was over, the world rejoiced. Thanks to rapid economic growth, the birth rate boomed. Life was good, and American pop culture in the 1950’s was regarded as big – think big hair, big skirts, big colours, and big cars, with one of the most iconic models being the Chevy Bel Air that quickly dominated this era. Chevrolet had long been regarded as world leaders when it comes to the production of big, loud and iconic automobiles – and the Chevy Bel Air was no exception.

Iconic cars don’t only appeal to car lovers, but they also tend to attract those passionate about engineering, design, art and yes, history. Before cars were built for efficiency and speed, it was about the experience, style, exclusivity and ultimately, craftsmanship, making them timeless, works of art. Arguably, it was the 1950’s that best encapsulated this methodology, as it was this era that birthed iconic cars like the Chevy Bel Air.

Excerpt from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%2B:

M+ is an art museum located in the West Kowloon Cultural District of Hong Kong. It exhibits twentieth and twenty-first century art encompassing visual art, design and architecture, and moving image. It opened on 12 November 2021.

The M+ Collections focus on twentieth- and twenty-first-century visual culture, encompassing the disciplines of design and architecture, moving image, and visual art, and the thematic area of Hong Kong visual culture. The museum is intended to rival the Tate Modern, New York's MoMA and the Centre Pompidou in terms of the breadth and importance of its collections. The HK$5.9 billion institution is led by Museum Director Suhanya Raffel since January 2019 and administered by the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA). A separate subsidiary company will be set up in the future with the aim of ensuring its "independence and efficiency".

The inaugural director, Lars Nittve, explained that the name is drawn from the concept of being a "museum and more", and that his team sought to move beyond the typical model of the art museum, for example, by serving as a showcase of diverse subjects like architecture, film, and all manner of moving images including animation and video games.

After an architectural competition, six finalists for the design of the M+ museum were announced in 2012, namely Herzog & de Meuron and Farrells, Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa (SANAA), Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Shigeru Ban and Thomas Chow Architects, Snøhetta, and Toyo Ito and Benoy. Each team was compensated with HK$1 million. The winning design, by Herzog & de Meuron and Farrells, was announced by the WKCDA in June 2013. As part of the Masterplan for the West Kowloon Cultural District designed by Foster + Partners, the architects proposed incorporating the use of underground "found space", referring to the space surrounding the Airport Railway tunnels running directly beneath the site, as a "radical" subterranean exhibition and performance area.

The building's design has the basic appearance of an upside-down T. The main horizontal slab housing exhibition spaces is lifted off the ground, permitting pedestrian circulation underneath. Above, a tower houses "public restaurants, lounges and gardens" along with offices and research facilities. Of the structure's total 700,000 square feet (65,000 m2), plans call to reserve 185,000 square feet (17,200 m2) for exhibitions, only slightly more than MoMA. In addition to the interior space, an LED lighting display system is integrated into the facade, serving as a gigantic screen for works of art, visible across Victoria Harbour.

Construction of the museum began in 2014. A time capsule containing artwork of local schoolchildren, to be unsealed 100 years later, was laid on the site in 2015. The museum building was completed in December 2020, with the occupation permit obtained on 24 December 2020.

Our tour continues...

Now you have probably heard of one our most famous residents: Honest John. Yes, his is a story of hard work and success; starting off with just a small used rover lot here on Planet Frost, and now he has rover dealerships throughout the Galaxy. In fact he is building a brand new facility here that will be opening soon. But Honest John's success has inspired many others to try to imitate his methods, and some without such integrity.

Here is one such imitator, Sincere Shawn. It looks like Meep and his friend Karl are working out a deal with Sincere Shawn to purchase that rover, Let's listen in.....

Sincere Shawn: "Yessiree this here is the bargain of the millennium. This here rover was owned by the nicest old federation granny who only roved it down to the crater market every other cycle. Its six wheel drive (but only one at a time for fuel efficiency, see). Its got a radium radiator cap from a genuine earth Mercedes Bends (that's real fancy you know). Plenty of other custom touches too, like this here 7-tone paint job. You can't go wrong. And remember every purchase from Sincere Shawn is backed with out Titanium-Clad Bumper to Bumper Warranty. (Not valid for regular wear and tear or for repairs or defects. Not valid on years that end with even or odd numbers or on days ending in "y")"

Febrovery 2025 - 10

The efficiency of 'bailing hay' has increased dramatically. In previous times the hay was cut, then raked into rows for 'curing' [drying by the sun] then 'bailed' into about 80 lb bales. These were then stored in a barn to keep them dry. Those were lifted by those who labored on farms--hard and hot work. Modern and huge round bales weigh a lot. I've heard as much a 1,000 to 1,500 pounds each.

They are wrapped with plastic to reduce 'weathering' and stored outdoors. This eliminated the burning down of a storage barn by a 'spontaneous combustion' fire.

The modern steps includes mowing, and at the same time 'win-rowing' the grass which is then bailed by a second machine; there is no waiting for 'curing' in the modern method.

Given the number of these floating around my yard, I don't even want to consider what the dandelion population in my grass will be next year!

The really wonderful version of this subject is over in Cerstin's stream.

In Havana, Cuba, vintage American cars are a common sight, offering a glimpse into the past and a reminder of a bygone era. This photo captures a taxi driver carefully cleaning his classic car, which boasts a unique engine built from a hodgepodge of original and salvaged parts. While these cars may lack fuel efficiency and have a negative impact on the environment, they are a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the Cuban people. Each vehicle tells a story and represents a piece of history, making them an essential part of the city's cultural heritage.

Kingsburg, Ca.

Friday evening, as if on cue for the Labor Day Weekend, several fires have broken out within 60 miles of Kingsburg in the Sierras. Our air quality is crappy on a normal basis. Then the numerous fires started by lightening in the Bay Area, Santa Cruz and Monterey areas, brought more smoke and particulates to our valley. The Monterey fires started when we were over there for five days trying to get away and hoping for cooler temperatures and better air quality. That didn't work out (except for the cooler air part).

Back home we watch as a small fire starting Friday night grows to consume huge amounts of Sierra forests. Areas that were packed with Labor Day weekend campers, boaters, hikers and whatever, were shut down and evacuated. More ash and particulates now pouring into the valley.

Each morning when I wake up, I have an internal debate about whether I'm better off not to go for a walk and become more sedentary, or go for a walk and breathe in all manner of toxins. Some days I go, some not. This morning I was up at 4:30 A.M., and out the door around five. As I backed the car out of the driveway, I realized I forgot my hat, so stopped and went inside to get one. As I passed the headlights, I could see lots of small particles of smoke, ash, or whatever, dancing around. Needless to say, I didn't have much trouble imagining that stuff lodging itself deep into my breathing apparati. Deflated, I drove to the donut shop and got a cup of coffee and two donuts to soothe my feelings of hopelessness. And, what better way to lift your spirits than a sugar and caffeine high? I then went to the place where I usually park the car and commence the walk, but today, I sat there in darkness eating my donuts, drinking the coffee, and listening to the news on NPR.

After that, I chose to cruise in the hopes that I might find an image for my camera as the sunrise appeared. Nothing found. Just as I was giving up and headed home, I did see this. Seemed kind of fitting for the day.

WASHINGTON—Twenty one federal employees who had been working with Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency resigned, writing in a letter that they wouldn’t offer their expertise to overhaul the government if it meant undermining essential services.

“We will not use our skills as technologists to compromise core government systems, jeopardize Americans’ sensitive data, or dismantle critical public services,” the former employees wrote on Tuesday in a letter addressed to White House chief of staff Susie Wiles. “We will not lend our expertise to carry out or legitimize DOGE’s actions.”

The employees had worked at the U.S. Digital Service, which the Trump administration renamed the U.S. DOGE Service. Musk, the Tesla chief executive who is guiding DOGE, has sought to overhaul the federal government with cuts to the workforce, the elimination of diversity, equity and inclusion programs and the closure of agencies such as the U.S. Agency for International Development and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

The letter was earlier reported by the Associated Press. It followed Musk’s push to require federal workers to submit weekly progress reports—in five bullet points. The White House said Tuesday that one million workers responded to the email, or more than 40% of the federal workforce of roughly 2.3 million.

The ex-employees, who didn’t list their names, criticized the DOGE process, saying a day after President Trump’s inauguration they completed interviews with “individuals wearing White House visitor badges” who declined to identify themselves.

“This process created significant security risks,” they wrote. They said that the firing of one-third of the USDS colleagues on Feb. 14 endangered millions of Americans who rely on their services to modernize Social Security, veterans’ services and tax filing.

“DOGE’s actions—firing technical experts, mishandling sensitive data, and breaking critical systems—contradict their stated mission of ‘modernizing Federal technology and software to maximize governmental efficiency and productivity,’” they wrote.

Many of the employees who resigned had previously worked for tech companies, said one of the employees who resigned. The employees had served in roles such as engineers, data scientists, project managers and designers. Their work had spanned the first Trump administration, the Biden administration and the current White House, the employee said.

View Of The Strand Gasworks From Marina Heights

The Gillingham Gas and Coke Company was established in 1837. The gas works were built on Rolls Bridge Lane, which later became known as Gas House Lane and is now referred to as Cemetery Road. Initially, there was just one gas holder installed, but a second one was constructed during the 1890s to accommodate growing needs.

A gas holder, commonly referred to as a gasometer, is a sizable vessel used for storing natural gas or town gas (which includes coal gas and, in the past, water gas) at pressures close to atmospheric levels and at ambient temperatures. The size of the container adjusts according to the amount of gas stored, with pressure generated by the weight of a movable cap. Large gas holders typically have a volume of around 50,000 cubic metres and feature structures with a diameter of 60 metres.

Nowadays, gas holders are primarily utilized for balancing purposes, ensuring that gas pipelines operate within a safe pressure range, rather than for the actual storage of gas for future use.

Plans are underway to redevelop the former gasworks for 500 residential units, a supermarket, and a care home with 150 units. The project is being led by Blueberry Developments Estates, a developer based in Kent. Additionally, the development will include a smaller replacement depot for SGN, featuring purpose-built offices and training facilities. Other proposed enhancements consist of extra commercial space, improvements to the roads, and a new clubhouse for Segas Sailing Club, which is situated on the site.

Although specifics regarding the housing are not yet available, the developer suggests constructing buildings that could reach heights of up to 17 storeys. Once characterized by its iconic gas holders, the site, bordered by Gillingham Marina and Pier Road, has seen a gradual reduction in activity in recent years.

The modern development known as The Hamptons is situated on Pier Road. It comprises 11 contemporary flats built after 1980, 12 flats of unknown age, and an additional address of an unspecified kind. The energy efficiency of the homes in The Hamptons has been evaluated through Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) surveys for 11 properties, with the majority receiving a rating of B. The closest station to The Hamptons is Gillingham (Kent) station, which is 1.1 kilometres away. Data from the Environment Agency indicates that the flood risk in this region is classified as very low. The latest census gathered information on whether residents owned or rented their homes. In the vicinity of The Hamptons, 50.4% of properties are privately rented, while 25.6% are privately owned with a mortgage. According to the most recent census in 2021, the average age of residents in the area around The Hamptons was 33.6, with 22 being the most frequently occurring age.

Gillingham is a town located in Kent, England, which is part of a conurbation that includes the nearby towns of Chatham, Rochester, Strood, and Rainham. It is the largest town within the Medway borough and had a population of 108,785 in 2020.

The town developed along the route from Brompton, where military barracks are situated, to the railway station, resulting in a linear expansion. Nearby was a road that followed the shoreline, connecting The Strand and the small village of Gillingham Green. Eventually, communities emerged along the main road - Watling Street - which served as a turnpike connecting Chatham to Dover. All these communities eventually combined to form what is now known as Gillingham.
