El Museo del Barrio invited educators to see the newly renovated facilities, including two exceptional inaugural exhibitions: VOCES Y VISIONES: Four decades through El Museo del Barrio's Permanent Collection, and NEXUS NEW YORK: Latin/American Artists in the Modern Metropolis in Manhattan Nov. 12, 2009. On March 4, 2025, NY Times bestselling author, educator, artist, and abolitionist Patrisse Cullors held an advanced film screening of “Close to Home.” Patrisse’s LA County Creative Strategist residency with the LA County Homeless Initiative focused on dispelling myths and shifting narratives about people experiencing homelessness. During her residency, she engaged with the LA Emissary, a youth-led organization founded in 2021 to inform funding, policy, and systems change within LA County to end youth homelessness through solutions driven and envisioned by those who are systems impacted. Patrisse executive produced a short documentary, directed by filmmaker Whitney Skauge. “Close to Home” reflects the voices and stories of four youth advocates with the LA Emissary as they imagine a world where everyone has access to safe, affordable, and reliable housing. On November 16, 2025, the Los Angeles premiere of “Close to Home” was held at the Renberg Theatre at the Village at Ed Gould Plaza, part of the Los Angeles LGBT Center. After the screening, LA Emissary members, Westside Vision Coalition, and Third District Supervisor Lindsey Horvath discussed LA’s homelessness crisis. Photos from the March 4 event by Giovanni Solis.
