Des Moines Performing Arts welcomed its 10 millionth guest during the Willis Broadway Series’ SOMETHING ROTTEN! engagement at the Civic Center.
Donna Britt, a retired 42-year educator of Jackson Elementary School, was the honorary guest that was recognized. She was responsible for establishing a partnership with DMPA that would provide thousands of students with the opportunity to experience free shows at the Civic Center. In addition, Jackson Elementary was awarded $10,000 on her behalf.
“When terror comes to your doorstep, you cannot fear it; you cannot tolerate it anymore,” says Bushra Hyder. Living in Pakistan’s most remote and volatile region along the border with Afghanistan—Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK)—she’s experienced firsthand the effects of increasing extremist violence. In the face of this ideology, she established a high school that teaches a peace education curriculum of her own design—the first of its kind in Pakistan. While inculcating tolerance and understanding in the next generation, Bushra also engages parliamentarians, religious teachers, and police officers in countering extremism and planting seeds for peace.

Took part in a Family Day fit for a king or queen, and explored “The Habsburgs: Rarely Seen Masterpieces from Europe’s Greatest Dynasty.”
Workshop Royal Court

We received an invitation to the palace by the Queen herself! We used our imagination to explore a castle, became royal characters and undertook a top secret mission with teaching artists from Children’s Theatre Company.
Hands-on Demonstration Oakeshott Institute
Noon–3 p.m.
Saw and touched medieval artifacts, and learned about medieval life from educators at the Oakeshott Institute. We saw a special appearance by an armor-clad knight at 12:30 and 2 p.m.!
Music Lute
Noon–4 p.m.
Heard the sounds of a traditional medieval instrument, the lute, played by musician Phillip Rukavina.
Storytelling Katie Knutson
Noon, 1:30 & 3 p.m.
Heard royal tales from around the world with master storyteller Katie Knutson.
Art-Making Collaborative Castle
11 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Helped construct a castle from cardboard, then played inside.
Art-making Coral Cutlery

We were inspired by the MIA’s own coral cutlery, as well as an incredible object owned by the Habsburg royal family. Then made a “coral”-topped spoon and fork of our own.

Crafted a family crest using gold foil paper.

Dressed ourselves in courtly attire and posed for a portrait at our photo booth.
Tour Treasures of European Art

Viewed masterful works by Rembrandt, Rubens, El Greco, Poussin, and more that trace Europe’s rich history, and saw treasures of the MIA’s collection that complement our special exhibition.

A Caring Educator

Dozens of educators, energy managers and facility directors from across the U.S. recently visited the HVACR lab at College of DuPage for a tour of the College’s state-of-the-art HVACR training labs.
As part of The Armory Show and Tell artist Matt Wardell presents:
“A couple years ago, I was asked to ‘demonstrate something’ or lecture to a group of amateur artists in the high desert. Most were 65+ and were a bit confused/outraged about some of Picasso’s experiments. While playing records, I walked them through my diverse practice while building a site-specific sculptural installation. While explaining each item’s significance, I then requested assistance completing the piece, which culminated in a performance of the constructed object.” Today, Wardell will expand on that general premise. Topics of discussion include “my relationship to materials, the rigidness of a ‘proper’ art career and my interest in the ephemeral, the absurd, humor, and the essential questions of being.”
Matt Wardell seeks to prolong a sense of wonder and place the viewer in a lingering position of active assessment. He is interested in how we choose to live and introducing work that facilitates these investigations. Wardell enjoys walking on fences, answering wrong numbers, and giving directions to places he does not know. Uncomfortable laughter, confusion, and irritation tend to be by-products of Wardell’s works. He has exhibited at venues throughout the US and Mexico, including Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco, Claremont Museum of Art in Claremont, and at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, Redcat, Post, Human Resources, Black Dragon Society, Mark Moore Gallery, and Commonwealth and Council, all in Los Angeles. Wardell is a founding member of the artist collective 10lb Ape.
About The Armory Show and Tell
The Armory Show and Tell coincides with the launch of the Armory’s 25th season of exhibition programs as well as the 100th anniversary of the 1913 Armory Show, the first exhibition of modern art in the US. For the past 25 years, Armory Center for the Arts has distinguished itself through its commitment to the notion of artist as educator. Today, The Armory Show and Tell has invited current and former Armory teaching artists and audiences to interrogate that idea; it centers around daily public presentations by 35 of more than 300 current and former Armory teaching artists who responded to an invitation to “perform your practice” in the Armory’s Caldwell Gallery. These artists have been further invited to leave behind a remnant of or detritus from their events, to be incorporated into an exhibition that expands over its 11-week duration.

Attended my first game at the beautiful PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where the hometown Pirates (or Bucs) were hosting the Arizona Diamondbacks. The game was never close as the Diamondbacks scored 8 runs in the first three innings and won the game 9-3 on a beautiful evening for baseball in Pittsburgh. We watched the game from the Miller Lite Rooftop under the scoreboard in left field. As the last event of the LEPE 2018 Meeting at Carnegie Mellon University, we enjoyed a great evening of baseball and dinner after a great series of meetings. LEPE stands for the Leaders of Experiential Project-Based Education. Most of the participants work at business schools where experiential learning programs are part of the curriculum. DMPS educators had professional development sessions throughout the district while classes were dismissed on January 22. During the PD sessions at the FFA building on the DMACC Ankeny Campus, Weeks Middle School and Roosevelt High School, teachers, principals and education experts presented to the groups about how to improve teaching strategies.
In recognition of their exemplary roles as educators, Baldwin Wallace recently honored Drs. Barbara (Mueller) Sawrey ’73 and Thea (McAfee) Wilson ’75 as Outstanding Educators and celebrated Dorin Jackson ’10 and Sarah Piscsalko ’13 as Jill Herrick Graduate Education Scholarship recipients. The four individuals were lauded March 25 at the 2018 Celebration of Outstanding Educators.

Lucy Aldrich Osband was born in 1835 and joined the faculty of the Michigan State Normal School in 1882. She retired in 1895 and died in 1912.
More than 700 applicants attended the DMPS Educator Fair at the Iowa Events Center on Saturday, January 11. The district plans to fill approximately 200 positions for next school year. Thank you to everyone who attended, and for the great work that went into another successful career fair!
