Peter C. Newman is known for a lot of things. That signature hat, that signature pipe and writing about Canada's rich and powerful. Peter came to this country during the Holocaust. His family escaped Czechoslovakia in 1940 and four years later, Peter enrolled as a 'war guest' at Upper Canada College. That's where he first met many of Canada's future business and political leaders. From there, Peter became a journalist. He was a reporter at the 'Financial Post', editor of the 'Toronto Star' and in 1971, he helped revitalize Macleans magazine. Peter introduced feature writers like Barbara Frum and Michael Enright as well as 'The Back Page' with Allan Fotheringham. But it's Peter's two dozen books about Canada's rich and powerful that make headlines. He's dished on John Diefenbaker, Lester B. Pearson, Pierre Trudeau, The Bronfmans, The Hudson's Bay Company and of course, Conrad Black. Then in 2005, came a political literary blockbuster. He published 'The Secret Mulroney Tapes: Unguarded Confessions of a Prime Minister.' The book was based on hundreds of hours of taped conversations between Newman and Brian Mulroney. Mulroney filed a lawsuit, and said Peter betrayed a friendship that went back to 1961. The lawsuit was later dropped. But the settlement wasn't made public. Peter is also a companion to the Order of Canada - our country's highest honour. His latest book is a biography on Izzy Asper. It's called 'Izzy: The Passionate Life and Turbulent Times of Izzy Asper, Canada' s Media Mogul.'
