Thomas A. Edison invented his first phonograph in 1877. The sound was recorded on tinfoil around a grooved cylinder. Despite its limited sound quality and that the recordings could be played only a few times, the phonograph made Edison a celebrity. Although Edison obtained a patent for the phonograph in 1878, he did little to develop it until Alexander Graham Bell and others produced phonograph-like device in the 1880s that used wax-coated cardboard cylinders.

Detroit Edison mid-train helpers work a train of empties through Nineveh, Pennsylvania on the Monongahela’s Manor branch. With 140 of DE’s 140-ton hoppers totaling in excess of 19,000 tons, this train will need the 9000 horsepower of these helpers, in addition to the 12,500 hp up front.

ACS-64 no. 607 (Siemens, 2012-2016) leads a westbound train through Edison Station. The location is somewhat fitting, since Thomas Edison was a prolific inventor, and is well-known specifically for his electric inventions (though it is Sprague that is the "father of electric traction").

Many young photographers probably do not know anything about a darkroom. Things are so much easier today. Before digital photography we had film which had to be developed in the dark using noxious chemicals and before film (around 1930), photographs were recorded on glass negatives. On the right near the window you can see a rack that is stacked with glass negatives. Edison is best known for his creation of the first moving pictures or movies as we call them today. Edison Theatre - Beautiful old Edison Theatre Building in Ft. Myers, Florida. I understand that the theatre was built in 1941 and was an operating theatre until around 1980. Though it houses offices today, I am thankful that its unique Art Deco decor has been preserved.

This little hydro unit is part Edison and part Tesla theories. Tesla was big part of AC voltage while Edison was a staunch DC guy. The had a real battle of beliefs between them.

Well this hydro unit is a GE product that produces AC. The control voltage that operates it is DC. The main breaker tying the generation to the grid is a Westinghouse 12Kv Breaker. So in some strange way I am generating Unity.

This is one of the buildings on Ocean drive in Miami. I wanted to get a close in view of the sign. I decided to blur the background in my post processing and give the image a darker edge so that the sign stands out more.

If you like this picture please feel free to look at my HDR set for all of my HDR shots. I also have a set with all of my Miami pictures in.

The Edison Theatre in Fort Myers was constructed in 1920 year and, like other attractions in the city, was named in honor of the famous inventor and scientist Thomas Alva Edison. The initiative to open the present theater belonged to John Hendry. It used to be a very popular attraction among the locals until 1980, when it was renovated and transformed into an office building. Even though visitors are not able to enjoy performances here any more, the Edison Theatre building is still an attractive landmark in Fort Myers - Fort Myers, FL, USA

Here is a find! (Not the surprise I promised yesterday, but still a wonderful get for collectors). We are in the Carrick Mill Antiques store out at Carrick, Tasmania. It is in the marvellous old stone water mill built by Thomas Monds in 1846).

But here are three shelves full of rare Edison phonograph recordings dating from the turn of the 20th century. Thomas Edison's company manufactured the first phonograph cylinder recordings in 1888. These wax cylinders (which played for two minutes) became the industry standard for several decades.

But there's more: If you look closely you'll see some of them are Edison Amberol Records that played for four minutes (about as long as you could wind up one of those mechanical players anyway). These were introduced in 1908, but in 1912, Edison came out with the new Blue Amberol Records. These were made out of a form of early plastic and thus more durable. You'll see some Blue Amberols on these shelves as well.

Thomas Edison’s home and laboratory are a step back in time when is this workshop when machines were run by belts and pulleys and music was played on phonographs. Where to the uninformed passerby, the buildings betray little evidence of the industries they once started.

This is the last picture I took of Edison. He passed over the rainbow bridge on March 1st. He was an awesome cat. I loved him very much and he gave me all that love back and more. He was my forever buddy. 2-24-2023
