I have been sorting out some old holiday folders, when I came across this from Sicily, quite liked it so thought I would put it up.
I adore Mule Deer and their giant ears. Love the curly fuzzy fur inside those big ol' ears too!
Colorado wild life
This provides context for the neighboring photos of the Elephant Ear plant. I am enamored of these gigantic, broad leaves that take on personalities as they droop dramatically when they need water... then perk up again when they get it. In fact, the reason I took this photograph was that I convinced myself I could stand and watch the wilted leaf long enough to see it rise from its resting place. (It takes a bit longer than I thought.)
I don't remember having seen this fungus before. I'd be happy to be corrected, but I'm guessing it's golden ear (Tremella aurantia), Olympia, WA.

Eastern Chipmunk.
Between 8 1/2 to 11 3/4 inches in length. Reddish brown above with a white belly. 1 white stripe bordered by 2 black stripes on sides ending at the rump. 2 white stripes on back much thinner than side stripes. Dark center stripe down the back. Pale facial stripes above and below the eyes. Tail brown on tip and edged with black. Prominent ears.
The Eastern Chipmunk's habitat includes open deciduous woodlands, forest edges, brushy areas, bushes and stone walls in cemeteries and around houses.
They range from southeastern Canada and the north-eastern U.S. east from North Dakota and eastern Oklahoma and south to Missisippi, northwest Carolina and Virginia.

Hazel is wondering what I'm doing, so she's perked up her big ears. Llamas have bigger, banana-shaped ears, one way to tell them apart from alpacas.
This Red-necked Grebe has it's "ears" up - tuffs of feathers it can raise on its head that look very much like ears. I'm not sure if the bird was flustered or excited but the ears were up for a while. I usually don't see them up too often.

Auricularia is a genus of fungi with fruit bodies that are typically gelatinous and ear-shaped. Auricularia cornea is a popular ingredient in many Chinese dishes and is also used in traditional Chinese medicine. From the 1870s to the 1950s, the fungus was collected and exported from New Zealand to China. Auricularia cornea grows on dead fallen or standing wood of broadleaf trees. The species is widely distributed in southern Asia, Africa, Australasia, the Pacific, and South America.
