All the best for 2022. We had a lovely balmy walk of 13 degrees, round Balgavies Loch today, 1st January 2022. Due to it being mild and damp here in Angus, there are many fungi showing, including this Wood Ear, Auricularia auricula-judae.

It amazes me to watch a Coyote or Fox hunt with their ears. You can see them lock in on a vole with great concentration, move their ears for a precise location... and pounce.

I love how this looks like an enormous large-headed robot walking toward me! Night photo of the starry skies enveloping one of the Big Ears of the Owens Valley Radio Observatory, run by Caltech since 1958, located in beautiful Owens Valley CA. This looks like a decommissioned radio telescope. It was not operating and has peeling paint. I feel like in the last several years, every time I photograph the Milky Way in Owens Valley during the summer, there are numerous fires. I lit the radio telescope with a ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the exposure. Special thanks to Caltech.

Mule Ears framed between an Ocotillo from the mule Mars Spring Trail. This is not by best result from a focus stack. There was a slight breeze which was causing the ocotillo to sway. It took a lot of time in post just to get to this stage. Perhaps it would have been better to leave the ocotillo out of focus, but here it is. Big Bend National Park, Texas, USA, May 2016

I adore Mule Deer and their giant ears. Love the curly fuzzy fur inside those big ol' ears too!
Colorado wild life
This provides context for the neighboring photos of the Elephant Ear plant. I am enamored of these gigantic, broad leaves that take on personalities as they droop dramatically when they need water... then perk up again when they get it. In fact, the reason I took this photograph was that I convinced myself I could stand and watch the wilted leaf long enough to see it rise from its resting place. (It takes a bit longer than I thought.)
I don't remember having seen this fungus before. I'd be happy to be corrected, but I'm guessing it's golden ear (Tremella aurantia), Olympia, WA.

This well-preserved site consists of five granaries built into Cedar Mesa sandstone. The overhang that forms the ceiling has a unique, streaked pattern that resembles flames at certain times of the day.
Ancient Puebloans lived here between 700 and 2,500 years ago. The granaries perched high in the cliffs stored corn, a main source of food.
