Very exciting for me since I had never written a pattern of any kind before. This particular one is entitled "Fairytale Mushroom Cottage" ~

this was the 6th of 7 pincushions to debut in Quilt Fabric Delights - Pincushion of the Month Club in Australia! Thanks Sarah for letting me be a part of this fun adventure!

I'm sitting at work on Monday and I notice that it is getting darker outside. I figured it was going to rain, so I didn't pay it any more attention. Well it got a lot darker and I looked out the wondow and it was looking a bit nasty so I quickly went to www.wixt.com our news channel to look at the radar to see what was going on. In red right up at the top of the page was TORNADO WARNING. I know the difference between watch and warning adn all we have ever really gotten up here were watches, which means that the conditions are favorable to produce a tornado. THe warning means that something is up and you need to keep your eye to sky and pay attention to your surroundings because one is trying to form or one has already formed and is on the ground.

I quickly went over to the weather channel website and got more details. It was telling me that at 2:50 this storm would be right where I was. The time was 2:45. All I wanted to do was to get home to my house and my kids. School dismissal is at 2:50. I fly out the door at work, jump in the van, pull to the end of the driveway away from all the trees and come face to face with this lovely wall cloud. I'm telling you I almost wet my pants. Since I only live 5 miles away I figured I would get home rather quickly. Well I thought wrong. About a mile away from work I started getting pounded by hail that was the size of half dollars. It was so loud inside my van. The intensity and the loudness was just insane. The whole lasted for about 5 minutes but I swear it was the longest 5 minutes of my life. No tornado actually touched down, but it tried forming several times out of this wall cloud. This shows the time elapsed photography from our news website:

Sanchezia sanmartinensis. Peruvian Red Flowering Sanchezia. Rare tropical Sanchezia from Peru with solid green leaves covered with short, fine hairs. Tubular red flowers emerge from the russet-red hairy bracts. As with the other Sanchezias, plant in a frost-free location with rich, moist, well-drained soil in full to part-shade.

Sanchezia is a genus of the plant family Acanthaceae. It is estimated to contain about 20 to 50 species. Members of this genus are shrubs, rarely small trees or herbs, occurring in the lowlands of tropical South and Central America. A close relative is Suessenguthia, which looks quite similar.

Because they have large, colorful bracts and flowers, and sometimes colorful leaves, several species are cultivated as ornamental plants throughout the tropics and in botanical gardens of temperate areas.

Exciting news! At last, I have something I've wanted for a long time - my own studio space! It's in Nazareth, PA, in an old building that's been many things over the years - and now it's a bunch of artists' studios. I'll be there for at least three months (more if I can swing it). At this point, I plan to pursue two projects: 1) working with more space for the little plastic people, including the possibility of some bigger sets for them to play around on, and 2) portraits of people (maybe you?) with photos for writers a specialty, as always. Who knows what other craziness will spring forth from all this? (BTW, if you're looking for studio space of your own, hit me up - there are a couple more spots available...)

This was (is)the longest day ever. Three hours of sleep last night, thanks to a very cranky baby and me wanting nothing more than to sleep. But, a little distraction is always good...

Boring day....breakfast with the police; dog waiting for scraps; baby chasing dog with spatula; mail with gifts was kinda cool; outside, where I never got; lunch (yes, bottlecaps); baby wakes up from 3.5 hour nap; smurf; baby takes a dip in the toilet (day starts to get better); pick up miss h after school, almost forget to take picture; get home and the boys play; dinner (yes, the dog begging).

And there you have it...12 of the longest hours ever. Baby, dogs, kids, toys, food. Camera. My day.

Not too exciting I fear. Must do better tomorrow...

I just returned from Johannesburg yesterday morning after an exciting 4 days...

Angelique and I departed Cape Town by train (Shosholoza Meyl) from Bellville station on Wednesday 2009/07/08 @ 13:00 for what ended up being a 35 hour train journey up to Jo'burg. This image was captured on Wednesday eveing @ 18:05 when the train was delayed for 4 hours in the region of Tulbagh due to some sort of power interruption. Prior to this delay we had already been delayed an hour at a time in Klapmuts & Paarl respectively due to a faulty engine unit – It was quite an adventure... Here Angelique is standing in the doorway with only the spotlight above providing illumination.

An Exciting Journey through Europe on an Interactive Floor Map.

Aha! Here is the long-suffering Greece ! It still exists ...

Experiencing European Politics at Europe’s Parliamentary Centre with an impressive array of interactive multimedia tools to give citizens, tourists and local residents a unique insight into the European Parliament and the other European institutions.

The area "United in Diversity" takes centre stage.

The central feature of the display is the floor map that stretches out in front of visitors for them to walk on.

The interactive floor map takes visitors on a virtual tour around the European Union, illustrates its diversity and highlights what contributions the European Union has made to each country.

The Parlamentarium is dynamic and interactive by design.

The walk on the "Ground of Stories" involves a 200m² map of Europe with over 90 interactive points.Moveable screens act as media guides, allowing visitors to travel to a country or region of interest. It displays spectacularly all the ins and outs of how the European Parliament works, how European unification came about and how Members of the European Parliament address todays challenges.

It shows a Europe with no borders, where you can explore Europe by means of a mobile "ground-of-stories scanner",and at "hot spots",as they are called, you get information about European institutions and events.A 3D LED cloud in the outline of Europe is suspended from the ceiling of the space. On this charted sky, opinion polls are displayed.

The two circular rooms, “Daily Life” and “Parliament” , face each other on both sides of the “United in Diversity" area and they immerse the visitors in a 360-degree film presentation.

On what foundations is Europe built?

What will European Cooperation look like in the future?

As Europeans we face many challenges,we live in an ever more globalised, competitive world although it is divided. And while most of us take democracy for granted,it also seems under increasing threat, both in principle and practice.

We are parts of a greater whole and our needs are the needs of all ; we should embrace the self of a union and the self of humanity. Each one of us is no more than a single cell in the living body of the hive mind ...

There is a better Europe, and we want it.They can develop a strategy for congruous and unified responses on euro-related issues ...

This photo is from a confirmand photo shoot on Sunday, where I got some beautiful photos of a nice young man at this spot.

And tonight I photographed another beautiful confirmand - a girl in her national costume (bunad), in the forest and at the beach in the stunning evening light, both together with her football and her puppy. I really look forward to show some of the photos later.

Since I love confirmand assignments, I love that I got these late ones now, since most of them are taken in spring when the confirmations are held.

Now I have to finish my preparations for the upcoming Israel vacation in only 1,5 days ツ Even though autumn is nice here in the north now, it will be nice with some warmth and to experience a new country.

If you are going to New Zealand, don’t miss this exciting experience.

And you are so right…. I was on the boat.

The Shotover River Canyons have been carved over thousands of years by billions of tonnes of glacial water sluicing from the heart of the Southern Alps. The very grandeur of the river provides an element of excitement.

No matter what is your speaking language, you just need to say two words along the ride.

1.Ah………

2.Oh……..

And the World famous Shotover Jet full 360 degree spin. Hold on tight and enjoy the thrill as you spin and without losing momentum keep speeding along the river. I forget spin for how many times….. my god, totally get wet, so this is not a great idea in the cold winter times.

One of the most exciting finds of my trip to CA was a nesting pair of American Avocets. In the late afternoon I had come back to an area where I'd seen them that morning and settled into a new spot for best sun angle. I looked out and was surprised to see an Avocet sitting on a narrow island amidst the water. It seemed like such a precarious spot I almost didn't believe. But soon it got up and swapped incubation duties with its partner. The second Avocet, before settling in, turned the front egg a bit to prevent the embryo from sitting in the same position for too long. Avocets share nesting responsibilities and swap as needed throughout the day. Although they did not seem concerned about my presence, I didn't stay long to ensure I caused no disruption. Its really exciting driving on this road from Karaj to Chalus

Today, the We're Here! gang is visiting Exciting Images of Life at Home.

Exciting news - I've just released a brand new instructional eBook:

Sharper Images - A Guide For Nature Photographers!

For quite some time, I've wanted to compile a collection of my top tips surrounding the perennial hunt we photographers are on for razor sharp, detail-rich images. What started as a blog post snowballed into this in-depth guide.

Over the course of my 10 years behind a camera - 5 of those as a full time professional - I've honed my skills in some pretty challenging environments. Shooting in the deep, dark rainforests of British Columbia and the Neotropics has instilled in me the importance of technical proficiency. My aim with this publication is to provide an accessible, thorough overview of the difficulties presented to photographers, and the corresponding solutions that will aid those pursuing sharper results.

I'm confident this is one of the most beneficial ways any developing nature photographer can spend $25.

I hope you'll enjoy the read and that it will help you improve your craft, as well as expand your passion for spending time in the outdoors, chasing compelling images!

There is no bigger story from local rail preservation this year than that of the resumption of work on Rio Grande 223 under the guidance of the C-16 Locomotive Society and the Colorado Railroad Museum. After six years of the locomotive sitting in a state of suspended animation, the resumption of work and its eventual return to Colorado is an exciting conclusion to a long restoration process.

It's also elicited a bit of reflection, I never was a member of the Golden Spike chapter of the R&LHS but my family offered some financial donations (okay my dad bought me the poster they were selling as a fundraiser when we first visited the 223 shops), and I was cheerleading the project from the comfort of my armchair. Occasionally a narrative still arises that that the R&LHS chapter failed the restoration effort, when what I have gathered it was a fairly steady restoration job; paying as they could go and putting quality if slow going work into the engine. Ultimately what doomed the Golden Spike R&LHS was difficulty navigating the mercurial world of city politics, and Ogden City's shut down of the project in 2019 was a slap in the face towards the volunteers working on the engine (que some "well you need to own the property" quote from online commentators, advice I'd argue while true always comes across as "well no shit Sherlock... hammocks! Why didn't I think of that?"). Understandably the Golden Spike chapter continued to fight for the engine's future and by extension the Utah State Railroad museum's future as a whole, creating a narrative as seen by some that they were an obstinate party, despite their effort leading to local news coverage of their efforts making it to the broader public raising awareness of the locomotive and the museum.

In a way the Golden Spike chapter's stubbornness paid off in drawing attention to redevelopment plans at Union Station. One of the biggest controversies my social media and photography pages have ever stumbled into was a report my friends and I published while I was in college over planned changes to Ogden's Union Station (written some years before the 223 lock-out), having seen early draft renovation plans for the site that would have removed the rail displays in favor of an ice rink. We got a lot of push back on that subject (in part because of our panicked, overeager and screaming from the rooftops tone that I can best attribute to "I was younger then"), and I understandably dropped it and shrank away from discussions of it; only to see the discussions on the museum's future flare up after the 223 lock-out occurred. In looking back on the matter recently, I got a chuckle that I threw out barbs out at the time rooted in a "poor, poor, pitiful me" attitude on local rail preservation; it's something that can still stick with me to some regard but has been tempered a lot by a) reminding myself of my armchair enthusiast position in almost all of this and that it isn't so fair to throw darts from the comfort of home and b) the realization that my own dissatisfaction with local steam lacking in action pushed me to take visits to some of my now favorite railroads in Nevada, Oregon, Colorado, Ohio and as far as Britain last year (and also with it a greater appreciation for the National Park Service ran Golden Spike site as my one local exception to the norm, I love my time visiting there) in the last few years leading to some of my most favorite adventures and memories that I could never have achieved as a railfan had I just stayed home waiting stubbornly for 223 or some other local project to suddenly roll out in steam here in Utah without any effort from my part! There is also some vindication too with time, since I also believe what has helped shaped Union Station's direction recently for the better has been consistent public feedback and even outcry from the community showing how much we love our railroad museum.

What has happened since, in the whims of city politics Ogden still is marching ahead with considering plans to renovate the Union Station site but public feedback has helped them keep the rail history as part of their future plans. The former Golden Spike members became one of the most vocal voices on this and groups such as "Save Union Station" on social media proved the public desire to see rail history remain on site as renovation plans continued to involve On the museum's end, this has included a growth in the diesel locomotive displays (and an eagle eye looking at my photo can spot the Western Pacific engine down the track, fulfilling a long vacant need to represent Utah's smallest Class One at the museum); and Ogden's work recently shows a continued interest in moving forward with the museum and site redevelopment in step. It is a reminder that for all the foibles of governance, that local voices can matter; and I hope the former 223 restoration crew continues to publicly voice their approval or disapproval of changes at the museum as the place continues to evolve; and that victories such as the Western Pacific finally being fully represented at the museum continue to benefit the local community and preservation interests. Maybe with the right voices in the room as the station's future redevelopment is considered, we can have our cake and eat it too; getting both a better rail museum and a downtown commercial/tourist anchor in the process; but that cannot be achieved if the rail preservation parties were to roll over silently and not raise their voices since without that open public dialogue we could always end right back up at those days of "ice rink" site plans again.

If anything while 2019's 223 shut down could have been read as a local government callous to its rail history, the 2025 donation of the engine seems a more calculated decision to deaccession the piece from the collection to its proper home in Colorado while turning the focus to Utah related subjects (although trust me, I wish something at least could stand in at the museum for Utah's often forgotten narrow gauge history! Anyone got a spare Utah Northern engine lying around?) This last week a former DRGW SW1200 made its way into Utah, en-route to Ogden; the latest addition to a collection of Utah rail history to come to the museum, it's shared time here with 223 before the narrow gauge engine leaves for its new home will likely be short but it is a neat changing of the guard as the collection in Ogden both expands in scope yet with a more narrow focus on Utah railroading.

It is unfortunate though that in a change of stewardship, that the R&LHS chapter won't have much of a hand on the wheel for 223's future; but I suspect once the engine arrives in Colorado the completed cab, appliances and tender worked on by the Golden Spike chapter will be a blessing for the new restoration crew; and attention can be focused on the boiler and running gear instead. The work the R&LHS put in will hopefully prove invaluable to bringing the rest of the project to a close. I think many of us will be excited for the day 223 once again steps out on the rails under steam, the conclusion of a long, sometimes painful, yet what shall be an ultimately victorious restoration effort born from starry eyed and dedicated volunteer work in the full Titfield Thunderbolt-ian vein. Every piece worked on from the Golden Spike R&LHS' contributions to the eventual conclusion in Colorado will represent one of the most storied restoration efforts in American rail preservation history; and I hope that when the day comes 223's whistle is heard in the Rockies again that everyone who has ever worked on the project can smile knowing it proved the naysayers who looked at a pitiful wreck of a locomotive dragged from a Salt Lake City park saying "it can't be done!" wrong once and for all! When we're standing trackside watching 223 roll by someday we'll all owe our gratitude to the dreamers who said it was possible and started the project. I hope to be there in Golden, or Durango or Chama or wherever it is that day when it finally happens to see it myself.
