All material of the walls made from slices of bamboo [known as anyaman sasag by locals] or wood and leave it without any paint except made from chalk. It means, whenever a 'modern' Kampung Naga person want to have a [modern] house made from bricks, they have to build it outside of the village.

....except for some togs with nothing better to do

I recently bought a field monitor to sit atop my camera to assist my aging eyes, knees and back in getting low perspective shots of small critters. In theory, the larger screen will help me as I track small birds and mammals like the prairie dog shown here. I say in theory because I did not get the chance to use it while we were in the Black Hills. These guys are very skittish (with good reason as I will post in the near future) and will typically run and slide back into their burrows when I even think about pointing a lens at one. Rather than get everything set up with the monitor, I decided to get out of the car to see if their skittishness would continue. Sure enough they all scattered - except for one. As you can tell from the facial expression and body language, it was not happy with me at all. Sorry bud!

My sincere thanks to all who spend the time to view, like or comment on my photos. It is much appreciated!

Except the itchweed, thorns, burrs, and mosquitoes : )

Except for Bees most insects this morning were clearly sluggish from the cold. Just a few more or less occluded rays from the Sun caught well by the 'Suncatcher' Tulip of the so-called Triumph Group. In any case, a few slow Hoverflies had found their way to Flower Brightness. Here's a Common Banded Hoverfly, quietly absorbing warmth.

White-Tailed Deer (female).

From between 27 to 45 inches tall and 6 to 7 feet long and weighing 150-310 pounds (male) and 90 to 211 pounds (female). Tan or reddish brown in summer and grayish brown in winter. Belly, throat, nose band, eye ring and inside of ears are white. Tail brown and edged with white above often with a dark stripe down the center and white below. Black spots on side of chin. Buck's antlers can spread to 3 feet. Does do not have antlers. Fawns are spotted.

The White-Tailed Deer inhabits farmlands, brushy areas, woods, suburbs and gardens.

They range tthroughout the southern part of Canada and the United States except for the southwest.

Clicked in its breeding plumage. The breeding bird is all white except for its dark legs, black bill with a yellow tip, and a yellow breast patch like a Pelican. It has a crest in the breeding season as clearly seen in this shot. Non-breeders lack the crest and breast patch, and immature birds have a pale bill and black tips to the primary flight feathers. This species is almost unmistakable in most of its range. Eurasian Spoonbills show a preference for extensive shallow, wetlands with muddy, clay or fine sandy beds

Except it's actually a ditch in the Alberta foothills with grubby snow.

A very good place to avoid the heatwave. Except for the horrible huge biting flies of which I killed a few.

… except it isn’t entirely.

This was taken from the North Devon coast last November. I processed it weeks ago but I have never published it because I was never quite comfortable with sharing the result. You see, it’s more created than captured. The drama comes mainly from the processing and doesn’t reflect the original or even the way I remembered it. As the result is fairly realistic, though false, I wanted to avoid misleading folk.

But for Smile on Saturday today we have a super theme Over-processed Skies. An opportunity not to be missed, and I don’t need to care too much about the level of duplicity involved. I’ve checked some of the example gallery for the theme, and there seem to be realistic over-processed images as well as false colour ones there so I hope this will be OK. I’ll post a link to the in-camera image so you can see where we started.

Processing skies is great fun. All you need is a few tall piles of fluffy white cumulus and you are away. Polarising filters are meant to help (darkening the skies) but their effects are very direction-specific (the skies are most polarised at 90 degrees from the sun and not at all directly away from it) and they create problems with wide angles as a result.

The main object is to enhance colour and contrast. Unless the sun is low in the sky both will be low. These days raw converters offer lots of tools to help like Clarity, DeHaze (or Haze) and the usual contrast sliders.

I remember reading in a book ages ago about how to enhance skies. Just duplicate the image layer in Photoshop (or another layer-based editor such as the free online Pixlr), and then set the blend mode of the top copy to Overlay. Easy then. So having zapped the raw into a contrasty saturated .tif file using a raw converter (I actually used Darktable for that as another experiment) I did something similar with duplicated layers, using Multiply as the blend mode which produces a darker result than Overlay. I sharpened it using High Pass and Linear Light blend at a high setting which improves local contrast. I managed to get a reasonable square crop out of it to emphasise the height of the sky. Finally, I did just a little tweaking and vignetting in Nik Color Efex.

So there we are. The result reminds me of the skies of many paintings I see hanging in stately homes - Constables or Turners perhaps, or dramatic naval battles. All a bit colourful and full of over-cooked drama. Just right for amusing oneself (and others hopefully!) on a Saturday :)

Thanks for looking. I hope you enjoy the image. Happy Smile on Saturday :)

..... except on the Roebling Tea Room's brick facade in Williamsburg, B'klyn.

The building, located right on the corner of Metropolitan Ave. and Roebling Street, offers two brick faces covered with graffiti art. If this building ever goes up for sale I don't know which market would handle the transaction, the real estate or art market!

More photos from the Roebling facade tomorrow.....

There are a lot of sea caves around Rum but not many are easily accessible except from the sea. We had to wait for the tide to go out here to get round a small headland on foot. The red rocks are the billion year old Torridonean sandstone.

Today is much like this day was. it's cool out, though, and quite windy. As I recall, the day I took this photo, it was rather hot. Blaine O'Neal Park is not a great one ot be in when it's sweltering out. There really is no place to get shade, except for along the bank of the lake, under the trees, and that is usually occupied by ducks.

This is probably the most deceptive looking park in the Daytona Beach area. While I've gotten some stunning shots there, it sometimes smells like you wouldn't believe! There is decaying matter in the water that will let off fumes that are really obnoxious! Fortunately for YOU, the fumes don't go hand in hand with the photo, but it's one of the reasons I only go to this park about once or twice a year!

I will be off commenting for at least another week or two while I am pulling extra hours at work and catching up on editing.

Except for the approx. 2 months we stayed downstairs with the real fire, this is the daily morning and evening scene at our home. I think my husband got a little tired of keeping the other fire going all the time. So for now, he just turns this one on, puts up his feet and has his morning coffee. And I am in the opposite chair with my own cup of coffee:)

Queen Anne's Lace and Berries.

A lacy, flat-topped compound of tiny, cream white flowers, with 1 dark reddish brown to purplish flower usually at the center of each compound.

They can be found in dry fields and waste places and range throughout the east except for the Arctic. They are also in much of the west.

Oakwood Metropark, Wayne County, Michigan.

One of the most iconic photo-spots in Germany. It is far out in the East, out of (almost) everyone's way. But we made the effort to get there. I planned to shoot through sunset into the blue hour. But the weather gods weren't quite with us that evening... except for a few brief moments before sunset when the bridge was lit up dramatically. Those few moments were totally worth it!

Oh! And a big sorry to everyone! I know, I have kept you waiting a long time for a new image. That's because I was extremely busy with many things lately. But big promise for 2018: I will edit and upload more often! Still have many sleeping beauties on my hard disk and quite a few new photo-journeys planned. So watch this space! I am still alive :-)

The artwork 'Everyone is dead except us' by the Rotterdam artist Ben Zegers was placed on the Binnenrotte on September 9, 2020.

The sculpture consists of two elegantly turned aluminum feet of 7.5 meters high, which are placed at a distance from each other on the Binnenrotte. The feet refer not only to the origin of the city, but also to the time-honored function of this place as a market: the two images seem to be in dialogue with each other, like customer and merchant negotiating the price. The raised heel and the rotation of the feet enhance the spaciousness of the work of art and give it a mobile appearance that matches the dynamics of the market and the city. It is therefore also an elegant work. The dancer by artist Degas from the collection of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen served as a model for the position of the two feet in relation to each other. The title 'Everyone is dead except us' is a statement from the city: a ceaseless call to everyone to make something of it together.

A new series. Out of square format, no title except that "engraved" on each photo GPS coordinates "a place of reliving a moment." In fact all the photos in this series are from my 1st photos made in 2009 with a modest Samsung.

Thank you for this one I've exhausted, finished with Scotch for his seal ...

and offered me a "window" to the world!

Facing Bass Strait, Sorrento Back Beach is one of the most photogenic parts of the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia. It is 62 km south of Melbourne and 8 km from Point Nepean at the end of the peninsula.

The sky is cleanly blue except for a small cluster of lazy white clouds in the distant left. The Pulpit Rock, near the centre, shines like a castle in the blue sea water.

Except for one window

Good morning everyone. Just two quick pics of another bird that when first encountered can be befuddling in spite of being very common. I know it did me the first time I saw one.

Without sharing the name, except for under the pic in the comment section, I'm curious how many people immediately recognize it.

Thank you for stopping by...and I hope you have a truly great day and weekend.

Except, really, it's the bokeh browns. Shhhh.

Had this idea for a picture yesterday but it didn't exactly come out the way I envisioned in my head. Firstly I couldn't get a high enough perspective to get a clear view of both lanes of the street. Would have wanted the eastwards lane (red lights) to be more distinctive from the other and the curve of the outbound lane to be more visible. But there wasn't a whole lot of room to maneuver on that ridge where this tree is located. Should have tried with the drone, except I can't do long exposures with it. Also, the traffic just isn't what it used to be. I guess people are more organized now and just do online shopping. Oh well. I tried.

...except to fly away!

I don't know if it's just me, but ladybirds seem to be a bit scarce this year? I've been hunting around for them in my garden for some while and when I did find one, I nearly killed the poor thing by mistake!

Still, I can happily confirm that this ladybird wasn't harmed in anyway while I was taking it's photo! Shortly after this shot it flew off. And probably got eaten.

[Explore #96! Thank you!]

Thanks for taking the time to visit. Any comments or faves are appreciated

I have no problem with good, constructive criticism and critique as it's a good way to learn and improve so please don't be scared to tell me if you don't like my photo, or you have ways of improving it!

This Christmas bauble was hand beaded with sequins and pins by me. I have a Christmas tradition. I bead Christmas baubles for a select group of friends every year. In this case they are for a friend, who like me, elects red as her favourite colour, but also likes gold, white, black and silver accents for her tree.

Each bauble is 15 centimetres in diameter and contain hundreds of sequins, varying in number depending upon the complexity of the pattern and the type of sequins I use. Most sequins in this bauble are 5mm in diameter, except the snowflakes which are 12mm in diameter. Depending upon the colour of the sequin, I will use either a gold or a silver pin to attach it to the bauble.

These baubles are smaller than some others I do, however because it is a complex pattern which starts from the inside and is worked outwards in ever larger circles, each bauble takes approximately 2 to 2 1/2 hours per side.

It is however, a labour of love which I do to pass the time throughout the year.

Except for a panoramic crop, this is straight out of camera.

Red-Bellied Woodpecker (male).

10 inches in length. Barred black and white above, pale buff below and on face. Sexes similar except that male has red crown and nape while female has red nape only. Reddish patch on lower abdomen seldom visible in the field.

Its habitat includes open and swampy woodlands. It also comes into parks during migration and feeders in winter.

It breeds from South Dakota, Great Lakes and southern New England south to the Gulf Coast and Florida. Northern most birds sometimes migrate south for the winter.

Except from the brochure:

Saint-Sacrament Chapel: With its stained glass windows, this chapel provides a peaceful setting for prayer and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, which is preserved in the altar’s tabernacle. The altar is dedicated to the Sulpician martyrs who perished on September 2 and 3, 1792, during the French Revolution. Next to it stands the altar dedicated to Saint Therese of Lisieux, whose statue was made by Elzear Soucy. She is surrounded by Ozias Leduc paintings.
