Mid winter bush is often grey and brown. Except for the wonderfully bright wattles that give a golden glow in the mist. The mist was rather white so I have added some Kerstin Frank texture.

Ok so I am on a roll with Rumblemumbles holiday snaps and superbly edited by her father.

There was more than one take on this balancing act, and i met large numbers of New York pedestrians cruising by.

All is hushed except the fluttering and snapping and popping of the cloth undulating on the unseen force around our angel.

Peering down upon the masses and deciding if it is time to descend and ask "why do you keep calling me here with all this discontent of life and tossing aside friendships over trivial matters. You need each other in these times of restlessness. I don't wish to bring my kind of pain and desolation upon earth. Please think on what your doing to each other, so I might sit up here quietly and believe in humans once again."Then there is quiet again except for the fluttering and snapping and popping of the cloth and a angel sitting peering down.

...except when it's not.

It's an artificial rose, actually, in a vase.

Please except my most humble thank you for you visit !! hugz good folks.

The fog lies over the port of Hamburg this morning, wet, cold and heavy. Except for the quiet hum of a few ferries or small motorboats, this part of Hamburg still seems to be asleep. Not even the typical cries of the seagulls can be heard (no wonder, in this bloody cold I wouldn't open my beak too wide either).

And yet I know that this silence is deceptive and that the working day is already in full swing all around me. You could already see that on the pretty busy ferry that took me here from the Landungsbrücken.

I also suspect that over there in the Elbphilharmonie opera house (if anyone doesn't know it, that's the impressive building on the right) the preparations for the day are already in full swing.

For my part, I'm lucky enough to be able to return to my accommodation soon, where I can bring my frozen feet back to life.

This stretch of coast is dominated by the Serra de Tramuntana. Except few small bays, one finds here no beaches. One of the most beautiful mountain and coastal roads crosses the Serra de Tramuntana from west to north. It goes past great viewpoints, which are called Mirador and beautiful mountain villages.

Hey Flickr! i'm back :) except i have bad news... My laptop was broken when i got back and i dont know how long its going to take for it to be repaired. i'm using my brothers at the minute and its the most complicated thing. what should have taken me five minutes took me twenty or so. im just going to sleep haha.

My holiday was lovely. So hot. In the past two days since i got back there have been thunderstorms here in the UK and i've spent both days with J then D. It's been really nice.

I am honestly going to try my hardest to catch up and reply to everyone but i'm probably going to be slow -_-

Many thanks for your visits, faves and comments. Cheers.

Little Pied Cormorant

Scientific Name: Microcarbo melanoleucos

Description: The Little Pied Cormorant is one of the most common of Australia's waterbirds, occurring on water bodies of almost any size. It is entirely black above and white below. The face is dusky and, in adult birds, the white of the underside extends to above the eye. Immature birds resemble the adults except there is no white above the eye.

Similar species: The Little Pied Cormorant resembles the Pied Cormorant,Phalacrocorax varius, but is easily distinguished by its smaller size and proportionately shorter bill The Pied Cormorant also has an orange-yellow face patch and black thighs.

Distribution: The Little Pied Cormorant is found throughout Australia.

Habitat: The Little Pied Cormorant is at home in either fresh or salt water. It is often seen in large flocks on open waterways and on the coast, especially where large numbers of fish are present. On inland streams and dams, however, it is often solitary. The Little Pied Cormorant mixes readily with the similar sized Little Black Cormorant, P. sulcirostris.

Feeding: Little Pied Cormorants feed on a wide variety of aquatic animals, from insects to fish. On inland streams and dams they turn to their most favoured food: yabbies (freshwater crayfish). These are caught by deep underwater dives with both feet kicking outward in unison. Other crustaceans are also taken, with shrimps being a large part of their diet in winter months.

Breeding: Little Pied Cormorants breed either in colonies or, less commonly, in single pairs. The nest is a flat platform of sticks, lined with green leaves and is usually placed in a tree. Both adults share in egg incubation and care of the young.

Minimum Size: 50cm

Maximum Size: 66cm

Average size: 58cm

Clutch Size: 3 to 4

One of many which were "singing" in the Dr. Josip Avelini Park in Hvar :)

The Cicadoidea (cicadas) are a superfamily of insects in the order Hemiptera, suborder Auchenorrhyncha. They have an exceptionally loud song, produced not by stridulation but by vibrating drumlike tymbals rapidly. They typically live in trees, feeding on sap, and laying their eggs in a slit in the bark. Most cicadas are cryptic, singing at night to avoid predators. They are found on all continents, except Antarctica, mostly in warmer climate. Although only males produce the cicadas' distinctive sound, both sexes have membraneous structures called tympana by which they detect sounds; the equivalent of having ears. Some cicadas produce sounds up to 120 dB which is among the loudest of all insect-produced sounds.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jedna z wileu cykad "grających" w Parku Doktora Josipa Aveliniego w Hvarze :)

except it is actually a juvenile Blue faced Honeyeater with green facial skin!!..this one is sourcing nectar from the flowers of Golden Penda...in my garden.

Blue-faced Honeyeaters are noisy and gregarious, and are usually seen in pairs or small flocks. They are known as the Banana-bird in tropical areas, for their habit of feeding on banana fruit and flowers...about 28cm.

Though I probably have more California Quail pictures than any other bird (except maybe the Black Phoebe or the Scrub Jay), this one's hard to forget. I was near Old Borges Ranch at the section of the East Bay Regional Park System reserved for preservation of quail, and the wind was buffeting me from all directions. I was about to give up on birds for the day, when I spotted this male overseeing his harem and at least 15 chicks. And he wasn't going to give up his post until they were all safely under coyote bushes, a favorite sanctuary if there are no farm buildings around.

Quail are not the brightest of birds. There was a Red-tail hawk overhead, giving his characteristic call. Any other bird would run for it, but while this quail kept an eye on the sky, it took him at least five minutes before he flew down to be with his (and others') familes. Btw, the Quail's real predator is the Cooper's Hawks, and Cooper's Hawks know exactly where to go to get a relatively easy lunch.

P.S. Quail prefer to run rather than fly. Their flight is in bursts and not terrible fast. In this respect, they're somewhat like the Roadrunner only a tenth as fast which is still pretty fast. They can, as we all know, outrun and out think a coyote, even one that owns shares in Acme Explosives!

except in dreams you're never really free

Common Name: Spotted Water Snake (obviously this specimen is not that spotted except for the yellow spots haha), or Spotted Mud Snake.

Initially, this species was assigned to the genus Enhydris, however, Murphy et al (2014) reassigned it to the genus Phytolopsis.

We found this while netting fishes for a friend's project.

Rarity: Uncommon in Peninsular Malaysia & Borneo.

Toxicity: Mildly venomous (but not-medically significant in human).

Length(Max): 73 cm. however, this is a baby or an extremely young snake. Its length is approximately 8-8.5 inches (20cm) , with body girth of a pencil.

Location: Peninsular Malaysia.

Distribution: Peninsular Malaysia, Indonesia (Sumatra), Singapore, Brunei, and Borneo.

Habitat: Blackwater muddy or silty streams and shallow ponds in lowland, freshwater swamp forest, or peat swamp habitat. 'Blackwater' usually refers to slow-moving, acidic, tannin-stained streams, and rivers.

Diet: Mainly fishes for example Tan et al (2014) found a forest Walking Catfish in its gut.

Etymology: Murphy 2017 suggested this species was named after the Latin punctura = hole, prick, or puncture, and may refer to the bite (marks). The species does not always have any punctate pattern or spots but some specimens actually do.

Iconic view of the Grand Canal from the Ponte dell' Accademia - except I took this from a water taxi while passing under that famous bridge. Standing tall in the background is a major icon of Venice, the basilica of Santa Maria della Salute.

In the center of the shot is yet another icon, a vaporetto heading straight for you. These water buses are an efficient way to get around Venice and multi-day passes can be purchased at your hotel (highly recommended if you stay for 3 days or more). The locals call them "Batèo".

The Grand Canal is the lungs, major artery and highway of Venice. The banks are lined with more than 170 buildings, most of which date from the 13th to the 18th century, and display up front the art and architecture created by the Republic of Venice thoughout its history.

I have brought the sky to you

Leave this unrelenting earth

What kindness did it show you

Except a massacre of truth

Loosen your bonds and move freely

Become what you are worth

Could anyone have shown more love

Could anyone have died more cruelly

Surely you are now your true self

Pure light of the spirit

Let go of that last breath

No more torture or death

Move forwards without regret

Thank you to everybody who has so kindly viewed, faved & commented on the first work in this Easter Series, "Sacrifice". I think what I shall do is a massive catch up with you all after the last work in this series goes up on Easter Day. Then I can enjoy all your galleries again!

So meanwhile...for Good Friday I have chosen one of my “Christ Tree” images, as this particular tree seems to embody the evocative feelings that gazing upon these series of photographs that I took at that time in my life always brings me, even now, some time after.

Christ was the World Tree, that we cut down. We potentially cut down our own future, but He knew that these memories would remain, that His sacrifice would never be forgotten while there were people who resisted the curtailment of freedom of spiritual choice in this world.

This living Christ Tree shows that love can still grow if we let it, that compassion can still flourish. But this living Christ Tree is also a reminder that all living things can contain a sorrow within them, as we carry our memories with us, not just from events in our own lives but also from events in the past, from our history.

This living Christ Tree is a reminder that we are part of the life on this planet, that what we do affects everybody else, we can never really escape it, because this life is all around us, and what we have made of it, for good or ill.

There comes a time when we must leave our lives on this earth, and let our souls travel on; how brave are those who choose to sacrifice themselves to further mankind’s understanding. But even for them, the light will come to relieve them of their burdens, enabling them to finally rest. Christ was such an individual, part human, part divine.

There is a spark of divinity in all of us, and will respond if given a chance to grow. The world could be a much better place if we listened to that voice telling us how things could be. All we have to do is turn to the Light.

*****

The Christ Tree was photographed in Sussex in the UK, near a village called Wilmington, and one of my most favourite places to be. In the right light, the Christ Tree speaks to you.

I have paired this work with Ólafur Arnald’s wonderful piece of music “Epilogue”, which has that sense of a final ‘letting go’ that captures the mood I was trying to create with this work for Good Friday. Please find link below.
