A more colorful consist than usual made its way across Arizona this morning with a few of us coming out to get it at different spots. The H-BARLUB1-19A sports a pair of CSX Dark Futures along with Warbonnet 786 and a FXE ACe in the most recent paint scheme for them. The 4029 has been back and forth on the southern Transcon numerous times in recent months, but this was my first time seeing it and I like it compared to the red and green ones. At 2.4hpt, the 5 units should have no problem moving the 35 loads, 70 empties, and 7018 tons at track speed.

Northbound CSX manifest Q422 rolls through Penola, VA on the RF&P Subdivision on March 6, 2021, led by ES40DC No. 5428. The maple trees are starting to bud out, signaling the beginning of spring.
A764 rounds Honeymoon Wye on their way to Moncrief as the crew of O755 watches their train as it rolls by. The train took quite some time to traverse the wye as the speed limit is only 10 MPH and the train was easily 10000+ feet.

I suppose if you come by a spot enough it'll eventually happen.
With one train a day overhead on the SB-Line, and 3-4 on the R-Line, getting a "perfect" over-under is rather challenging. Here, P32 heads to Catawba as 13R makes a set-off underneath.
12Zis splitting the CPL's at Arcadia as they head north to Shenandoah where they will change crews. The other end of the siding is known as Solitude which I find fitting.
A westbound unit train of military equipment passes the engine tracks and yard office at Motor Yard in Macedonia, Ohio.
CSX empty coal train E908 has reached the east end of its destination of Martin Yard as it passes by the signals at Arkansas, Kentucky and rolls on to the E&BV Subdivision. This train will tie down in the yard in Martin and wait for a mine run crew to take it for loading.

L303 is working its way east from Grand Rapids to Detroit, clicking off the miles and passing the classing search lights as they go but this trip is far different than my last visit. Just a couple days before this CSX removed 4 sets of searchlights between here and Lansing making the 105 signals in Mulliken the eastern most set until you get to the other side of Lansing. A storm over the summer leveled all kinds of code line making this section of the railroad top priority to be replaced and upgraded, While this was just 6 days ago its very possible that these too are now gone. No new signals are in place yet but a signal suspension is in place making these just extra unneeded upkeep and expenses.
On the 2020 "Leap Day" Norfolk Southern's Virginian heritage unit leads manifest freight 15M as it crosses the trestle near the NY-PA state line. This trestle spans Twentymile Creek just a few miles south of Lake Erie.

Think this is E20822 heading west past Richmond Int'l Airport in primo light. A one hour drive from home base at Newport News, the spot is worth it in summer afternoons due to how wide open it is.
After turning their entire train on the wye at Sanderson, southbound L410 now runs north into Memphis Junction Yard with a pair of former Seaboard GP38-2s and a ratty ES40DC in charge.
After sitting overnight in North Bergen to my surprise, K16228 is seen heading west along the P&H at Avenue I with a SD40 leader..

Norfolk Southern manifest freight 178 pulls into Bison Yard in Buffalo, New York, passing through the Panama control point and rolling past the M&M U Pull It auto lot that lines the south side of the track. This will terminate in the yard here, with the power returning west on train 179.

CSX Q301 has made it out of Oak Island Yard the day after a massive snow storm dumped over two feet of snow across the region. The storage tracks in Manville Yard are completely covered with snow and would normally be visible to the right of the GEVOs.

Eastbound Stack Train NS I0W (20W extra) rolls by the intermediates at CD 334 on Norfolk Southern’s Chicago Line just east of Stryker, Ohio, with a GE ES40DC No.7608 in the lead.
A short NS 18N passes through CP Bound Brook just after sunset with one unit leading plus a rear DPU. Conditions have been good for some interesting sunsets in recent weeks.

November 28, 2021: CSX loaded ethanol tank car train K437 (Chicago, IL-Lawrenceville, GA) flies southbound down the K&A mainline on the CSX Etowah Subdivision, seen here making every bit of track time at the MP OOC 402.49 intermediate signal at Fairmount, GA. A Canadian National ET44AC GE engine and CSX ES40DC GE engine are providing the pulling power for this run. The train had been delayed in departing at Etowah, TN, but thankfully there was just enough light left to snap a shot.

Thanks to Mr. Newman, I was given a heads up that G521 was about to get on the Cartersville Subdivision heading to Rockmart. Considering this was A) a unit train on the Cartersville Sub & B) a rare afternoon run on the sub with clear skies, meaning the train would be well lit up by the sun, I diverted from heading home & managed to get ahead of them in Stilesboro. Here, we see the train east of Taylorsville with the exhaust towers of Plant Bowen in the background. 4-16-20

Norfolk Southern grain train 34W heads down the Kenova District as it passes the coal loadout of the Big Sandy Terminal Inc. in Dock Creek West Virginia, south of Kenova. Now a shell of its once bustling operation, the company still occasionally loads railcars, filling cuts of about ten gondolas with a front end loader.

It's a gorgeous afternoon as Norfolk Southern ES40DC No. 7630 leads the "Southern Heritage unit" and BNSF C44-9W No. 4056 on BNSF's Laurel to Denver manifest train at Boulder, Colorado on December 11, 2014.
Norfolk Southern ES44DC 7564 leads Train 15R across Whaley Street in Columbia, South Carolina. The train was crawling along the tracks. It may have been going 3 miles per hour and tied up traffic long after it had finished blocking any streets.
If you have thought trains are getting longer in recent years, you would be correct. Railroads have adopted something called Precision Scheduled Railroading. Many people inside the industry say railroading is neither precise nor scheduled. The train got into town right before noon when usually it arrives around 6 pm daily.
Four road freights used to travel on this line daily. PSR changed that and now two freight runs. This increases the size of the train while decreasing the amount of crews working those trains. It increases the shareholders profits and management's bonuses while cutting railroad jobs on the ground. It also adds to how long each train blocks crosses therefore becoming a nuisance to drivers trying to get from point to point.
Nothing to see here though. Move along.
I didn't even know CSX repainted locomotives, but here we are. An incredibly clean GE sits on the point of a northbound autorack train at CP Vine Hill in south Nashville.

A southbound Norfolk Southern stack train speeds by the former N&W CPL's at 'Washington' near Glade Spring, VA along the Pulaski District. Unfortunately these signals are gone now due to a siding lengthening project.
The first visible sign of things not going well in East Tennessee & Western North Carolina thanks to Hurricane Helene. Normally, M693 would run via the Clinchfield, but thanks to that storm, this X693 would be rerouted to run via the L&N. This would penultimately end up being the last 693’s to run for at least while thanks to that storm. 9-30-24
