CN 599 has a short 76-axle long train as it heads to the Port of Montreal with intermodal traffic and borrowed NS power. Units are NS 7569 & NS 4462.

Loaded export coal train NS 814 drifts down Christiansburg grade with a pair of GE products up front as it passes by the cemetery at "John Farm".

A westbound CSX mixed freight passes the former New York Central station at Ashtabula, OH in July 2011. CSX razed the depot in May 2018.

In the final hours of sunlight on June 19th, 2020, CSX train Q003 (South Kearny, NJ - Bedford Park, IL) crosses over High Falls in Rochester, NY as a rainbow forms in the waterfall's spray.

From left to right, L810, a Yard Job, and I197's DP all converge at North Yard in Cartersville, GA at the end of the Etowah Subdivision.

Norfolk Southern loaded coal train 578 sits awaiting a NS crew in Freeport, PA next to lock number 5 on the Allegheny River. This coal train was loaded at Lady Jane in Penfield, PA on the Buffalo and Pittsburgh, and then ran to Freeport via the B&P and P&S making these coal trains the first move on the P&S south of Kittanning since 2018.

One of twelve ex-Conrail standard cab SD60s is on the point of Q191 as the crew assembles their train at South Kearny Yard.

Decided I'd go out on this rather nice day to find Q329. Kept hearing them on the radio, calling signals as what sounded like "CSXT 8286". Oh cool, an SD40-2! I thought. Alas, it was just a DC Gevo. Here it is leading the train across the Thornapple River about 10 seconds before a big, puffy cloud obscured the sun!

A pair of CSX GE's make a morning run eastbound over the Greenwich Subdivision as it heads towards Collinwood Yard in Cleveland. As the train rolls through Wellington, Ohio it passes by an old silo and is about to cross over Main Street.

I figured the first train of the year for me would be a CSX train, which it was. However, I did not expect it to be this K429 with three CN locomotives.

On a surprisingly warm January morning in Waxhaw, NC, K429 makes its way to Monroe Yard to run around and head Northwest to the Charlotte, NC Transflo.

CSX train Q276-23 is seen passing the old and new signals at Wick Road, MP 92.7 on the Saginaw Subdivision. The train will stop at TDSI New Boston to add to the 25 multi-levels it brought from Rougemere Yard.

December has arrived, meaning we're nearing the end of 2020, though the madness might continue for some time.

But, lower "winter" sun makes for a brilliant blue sky, just need something good to go with it.

Enter U-CXZEFV0-58T, an empty crude oil train headed west to fill up, led by a trio of CSX GEs.

Usually, I'm not a fan of the Yn3 & Yn3b CSX scheme, even in sunlight as it ages bad and just doesn't look that good, (Yn2 all the way), however, a clean rebuilt isn't all that bad.

Almost missed this one but I got the shot.

P97 crawls into town under dramatic skies with an ES40DC and one of the recently acquired ex EMDX ACes for power. Overhead, a large flock of seagulls (billions of birds one could say) are fleeing the bridge where they had been resting just before the train's arrival.

NS hopper train 747 heads east under the position light signal bridge at CP Mans in Mansfield, OH, on the Fort Wayne Line.

Meeting the absolute first and slightest sliver of the light from a beautiful sunrise, recently reactivated 7787 leads 5364 north under the signal at South Deshler. The train will briefly stop in town before blasting off to Toledo.

Here it comes!

With a pair of ES40DC's leading the way, empty NS coal train 851 passes through the massive floodgates that protect downtown Williamson, West Virginia from the Tug Fork River. The train is arriving at Norfolk Southern's Williamson Yard where the train will be recrewed before continuing its trip back to the mine.

644 axles of Q135 head for the summit at Sandpatch. A pair of C40-8W's (B246-15) are shoving on the rear of the train.

Clear of Saint Joe swing bridge the engineer... okay trip sodimizer has the train notched up climbing up from shoreline level and about to curve away from Lake Michigan for a while. This location has really grown up over recent times and could really use a good dozing. Above the third car in the train you can see just barely see the light house and breakwater light off in the distance.

17M makes it way south over the high waters of the Conowingo inlet at PILOT. After the building of the Conowingo Dam just south of this location, the high waters masked most of the arches on bridges on this line, leaving only a low clearance.

Ah yes, the big tree at Butlerville, IN. Perfectly placed to where it just shadows in the E.E. signal. But it's an icon of the Indiana Sub, just like the tree in Nebraska, CPL signals or towns along this route. This morning's eastbound Q504 departs Butlerville after setting off one coil car in the siding to be picked up by J780 later that afternoon.

An SD70AC-ES40DC pair are pulling as hard as they can as they lift a heavy L303 out of the Thornapple River valley at Snow Ave. Lead unit #4735 is a very recent Huntington rebuild that was still so clean that you could've ate off of it.

CSX F728-12 splits the Whitehurst Station Road grade crossing, guarded only by a pair of crossbucks, as it makes its way to Rocky Mount on the AA Line. SD40-3 #4228, a former Conrail unit, is on point of today's train along with an ES40DC. This was my first time shooting this train, and I can safely say it won't be my last. This line is gorgeous to shoot, but unfortunately, you can only shoot their northbound run in the mornings up to the wye in Parmele before it becomes entirely backlit.

It wont be long now before these classic search lights fall to new safe trans or some other junk. CSX is actively laying bore pipe, and putting in new bases between Lansing and East End Williamston.

An empty grain train nears the end of its journey as it passes through Big Lake.

Grain trains to St. Cloud aren't new, but I don't recall seeing a mix of power like this before in recent years.

Not very often do we get to see CN leading trains on the northern transcon, let alone EMD. I don't get to see much of CN period, except when I was working at Northtown.

This train had a pair of treats buried in the train as well, NP and SF heritage hoppers were mixed in the regular BNSF hoppers.

An early morning post revealed that the Q-NYCLAC6-15L was out of Belen, NM with only 2 NS units today. With the day off and a sunny forecast, I headed for a popular spot on the Gallup Sub that allows for good midday light and a chance to see the whole train. A short wait with 2 EB's and 1 WB ahead of him through here was topped off with the NS 7705 and 8133 racing across the high desert with nearly all the spots filled with East Coast boxes. Within 45mins they would arrive in Winslow, add the BNSF 7419 in the 3rd spot, do a crew change, and continue along the Seligman Sub. Thanks to the interoperability of PTC across the Class I railroads now, foreign leaders are starting to show up more frequently on the BNSF out here.
