It’s a sweltering afternoon in Eastern Kentucky as Shelby Shifter R282-24 starts to pull their 55 loads from Excel Mining’s Scotts Branch tipple. This train would originate from Coal Run Yard as a C380 for Wateree, SC a few days later.
On an overcast afternoon, a GE ES40DC and C40-8W lead CSX manifest freight M311 as it heads north towards Columbus on the CSX Northern Subdivision. The train is coming into Sciotoville, Ohio on the 1916 built continuous truss bridge that features two 775 foot long spans over the Ohio River.

With a fresh crew on board, a late evening NS slowly pulls out of Bluefield yard. This train is destined for the Clinch Valley district.
On the rails of the former Virginian, NS 9723 banks under the New River Palisades in Eggleston, Va with tidewater coal train 810. - We felt pretty lucky to see a thoroughbred painted C40-9W and an ES40DC running loads in 2024; funny how time can change your perspective on things.
CSX Chicago (Barr Yard) to Grand Rapids train M326 heads east with 74 cars under the Pere Marquette coaling tower. Power is GE ES40DC 5368 and AC4400CW 409.
Union Pacific grain empty departs Salt Lake City, Utah with a Norfolk Southern ES40DC in charge. Symboled the GKKEPC, the train is clattering on Main 3 while curving to enter UP Main 1, crossing to 2, all at CP North Salt Lake.
April 27, 2024 was damp, rainy, and cold afternoon, adding a bit of drama to the cooling and distillation towers at the Big West Oil Refinery on Center Street. April 27, 2024
CSX Q228 creeps through the control point of East Henderson after a several hour delay. This delay caused the sunlight to be even better by the time they showed up which made the multi-hour wait well worth it.
CSX L79014 shoves into Vulcan's (Florida Rock) Miami quarry on the Lehigh Spur with freshly repainted CW40-9 #9031 leading ratty ES40DC #5312. The 9031 like all recent repaints wears the YN3C livery with no more boxcar logo, new stenciling, and www.csx.com etched on the bottom of the "X" on the long hood. This is almost a deja vu moment to the January 2020 catch of O722 with two fresh CM44ACs with many similarities to that catch.
CSX train L302-28 gets underway after stopping at the west end of Howell after getting permission from the dispatcher to pass the stop signal. Pulling the 78 cars this evening is SD40-3 4065 and ES40DC 5487.
CN 5731, CN 8847 & CN 2231 is the power on CN 148 as it kicks up the snow heading east through Beaconsfield. This was the morning after the Kingston Sub reopened after a derailment had closed it for a few days around Christmas.
RJ Corman train Z549 navigates the curvature of the old C&O Loup Creek Branch between Thurmond and Mount Hope, WV on a wet Spring day.
Led by an AC44CWM and two more GE's, CSX manifest freight M542 makes an eastbound run across the Indiana Subdivision as it splits the B&O CPL signals in Delaware, Indiana. In the last leg of its journey from Waycross, this train will terminate at Cincinnati's Queensgate Yard.

After stopping for the conductor to throw the switch, Norfolk Southern empty coal train 823 heads into the yard near Deel, Virginia where the train will be tied down to await a crew to take it to the mine for loading. An N&W position light signal still stands guard here at the Anchor control point at the west end of the yard.

With the sun breaking through the clouds just in time, Norfolk Southern unit trash train 11T rolls through Arcadia, Virginia behind an ES44AC and a leased WFRX SD70MAC. A set of veteran N&W CPL signals stand guard here at the Arcadia control point, but their days on the line are likely numbered.

Hot shot recrewed and on the move, NS 24M with the Wabash Heritage unit is notching out of Toledo for points east. On the adjacent track 21T is also recrewing at the Toledo pad with the 1067 on point, I didn't get in town quick enough to launch the bird for a meet shot but was able to shoot each train leaving town.
After holding the main to meet the northbound M654, loaded CSX coal train C313 gets back on the move past the SE Allen control point on the Kingsport Subdivision. The train is passing by the Clinchfield color light doll arm signal, one of many that still stand guard at locations along this line.

It took 3 days for this shot to finally work out for us, but on Sunday morning we see T350 ducking under the C&O bridge at Bobbs.
A pair of GE's lead by AC44C6M 4312 leads a loaded NS coal train as it makes an afternoon run down the NS Kenova District on a late fall day. As the train approaches Prichard, West Virginia it passes through a rock cut and then crosses the trestle over Elijah Creek.

Heavy clouds roll in at the end of the day as eastbound 54W rushes though control point Kumis on the ex-Virginian Whitethorne district.
Norfolk SouthernTrain 337 is seen here leaving Rock Hill, South Carolina in May 2006. NS 7553 was a General Electric ES40DC built in December 2005 and pressed into service before being painted. She was later given the horsehead treatment and then re-rated to 4400 horsepower.
Q501 accelerates east after waiting for a pair of CN trains at the Wellsboro diamonds. The train on this day was powered by an SD70ACe-ES40DC-AC6000CW trio. Only the Gevo is still rostered by CSX today.

NS 7630, an ES40DC, leads the 10+ hour late Amtrak 29, the Capital Limited, over the Sandusky Bay Bridge in Bay View, OH because of the trailing locomotive behind NS 7630, AMTK 147's traction motor catching on fire somewhere along the east coast. Amtrak 29, as pictured, also had 5 private cars at the end of it. By the way, this was taken from a boat.
GE ES40DC 7573 spent much of it's early life as a "grey ghost" locomotive in grey primer before finally getting a nice coat of black paint. This photo taken at Conway, Pa. yard and engine service facility.
After holding to meet the northbound M692, loaded CSX coal train C313 is on the move south on the Big Sandy Subdivision as it crosses the bridge over the Russell Fork River in Elkhorn City, Kentucky. Just past this location, the former C&O rails become the former Clinchfield, which is now the Kingsport Subdivision.

Bringing up the rear of the train as the DPU on loaded ethanol B651, CSX 3287 rolls under the C&O cantilever signal at SK Cabin in Thelma, Kentucky as the train heads down the Big Sandy Subdivision. This was once the west end of the Bobb siding, which is one of several sidings on the line that have been removed by CSX in recent years.

The train is crossing over the Youghiogheny River at the junction where the Mon Subdivision connects to the Pittsburgh Subdivision.

A quartet of GE locomotives consisting of two AC44C6Ms, an ES40DC, and a Union Pacific ES44AC, slowly enter Enola Yard on a gloomy Saturday morning in April. Notice the transformer load on the depressed center flat car and 3 Norfolk Southern High Top hoppers on the headpin.
As this NS manifest freight departs from Gest Street Yard in Cincinnati, Ohio, it immediately begins climbing the grade out of the Ohio River Valley as it heads south. The tracks first climb the approach to the bridge that spans the Ohio River, crossing over CSX and IORY trackage as well as the 6th Street Expressway along the way.
