Tooks 3 days this week in search of Red Bud spending some time on the Shenandoah Valley, but mostly on the Pokey between Montgomery and Bluefield, no bud West of Bluefield but plentiful here.
Spring color has started to pop in Dickeson County as Shelby Shifter R240-14’s pair of GE’s dig in shoving 100 empties up the McClure Spur’s 0.5% grade toward AlphaMet’s McClure Preparation Plant. After supplying their empties, they’d run the 100 loads of Met coal they just pulled back to Shelby.

Loaded autorack train Q234 breaks the quiet of a cold winter night in Churchville, New York as it rounds the bend at Savage Road and heads east towards CP 382 where it will diverge on to the West Shore. In the lead is CSX SD70MAC 4566, which was one of only a handful of SD70MAC's still wearing the YN2 paint scheme at the time.

The crew is only a few miles from the end of their run, where they will bring their train into the Williamson Yard to get its next crew.

A northbound CSX train has reached the Deshler Junction, Oh. from Lima and is turning westbound on the main line to Fort Wayne. (7/16/16)
The Red was in bloom East of the crew change at Bluefield but none was to be found West of there. We had a pretty good afternoon on the Pokey.

The first time I went to Wasp Rock it was in July, 2018 and was a typical summer day, but when your are from away you shot it. This morning JJL and I went out and we got a couple of keepers on 2 different railroads. I think this was a pretty good start to the month.

This morning the 2nd rail train for Keolis was delivered by Pan Am at Westminster. Due to a work engine shortage, the power was MBTA F40PH-2C 1055 & Norfolk Southern ES40DC 7564. Here we see the odd duo of power bringing the rail train eastbound on the Fitchburg Route at Lincoln, MA.
CSX 5414 slowly rolls east through the 79.7's at Hayden, IN, bound for their next stop in Butlerville to set out and pickup cars from that morning's J780.
CSX train Q693 exits the 752' Sykes Mill Tunnel north of Clinchco, VA on its way south down the CRR.
Rolling under Highway 52 as they emerge from Tunnel 1 south of Kermit, West Virginia, a pair of ES40DC's lead empty coal train 851 east on the NS Kenova District. While the line once had seven tunnels along it route, three of them were bypassed when the line was cleared for double stack container clearances.

CSX mixed freight L644 (but mostly auto racks) creeps through the distch and past the Amtrak platform on 5/8/2023. CSX 5245 was built in 2005 as a General Electric ES40DC.
After getting a crew change in West Deshler, M350 works it’s way south with an SD40-2 on point. This unit was giving the crew troubles but made the journey to Cincinnati.

A Norfolk Southern unit covered hopper train passes under the Norfolk and Western coaling tower in Prichard, WV. On the left of the frame is the high chain link fence from the failed "Heartland Intermodal Gateway" project. Completed in 2015, this was part of a larger project undertaken by NS to allow double stack clearances on the old N&W to make it part of the "Heartland Corridor" stretching from Chicago to the ports of Virgina. Additional tracks were added, with brand new control points at each end of the facility to accommodate long stack trains that would pick up and dropoff containers here. However, the facility only managed 579 container transfers during the 2018-2019 financial period and has sat dormant since early 2020.
On a bleak winter day, Norfolk Southern mine turn N25 heads down the middle of Main Street in West Brownsville, Pennsylvania behind a pair of GE locomotives. After loading at the Bailey Mine, this mine run crew will take the coal loads to the Shire Oaks Yard, where it will then be sent on to its final destination.

CN 5731, CN 8847 & CN 2231 is the power on CN 148 as it kicks up the snow heading east through Beaconsfield. This was the morning after the Kingston Sub reopened after a derailment had closed it for a few days around Christmas.
A pair of ES44DC's lead coal empties across the massive trestle at Amonate, Virginia as they make their way up the Dry Fork Branch to load at Beech Creek. Running as J49, the crew ran light power from Bluefield to Cedar Bluff, where they picked up the empty cars from the siding to take to the mine.

It’s a sweltering afternoon in Eastern Kentucky as Shelby Shifter R282-24 starts to pull their 55 loads from Excel Mining’s Scotts Branch tipple. This train would originate from Coal Run Yard as a C380 for Wateree, SC a few days later.
On an overcast afternoon, a GE ES40DC and C40-8W lead CSX manifest freight M311 as it heads north towards Columbus on the CSX Northern Subdivision. The train is coming into Sciotoville, Ohio on the 1916 built continuous truss bridge that features two 775 foot long spans over the Ohio River.
