Engine of Sierra #3 - the "Movie Star Locomotive"! The train is over 100 years old and been in more TV and movies than any other. Most people don't get this view, but Mary made friends with the docents.
490-hp 6.2-liter V-8 engine mounted behind the cabin—enough grunt to pull off a 2.8-second 60-mph time
At September 30th 2017 ÖBB's 1142.608 and 1116.056 hauled empty freight train LGAG 58665 to Eisenerz. This train commutes on daily basis and gets most of the time an older engine in front to support the Taurus for its journey through the so-called Gesäuse. I took this picture near Frauenberg, in the background you can see the impressive mountain chain called Warscheneckgruppe. On the right side the church of Frauenberg hides behind the trees. Nice detail is the little smiley on the front of the class 1142 engine.
This engine is usually described as 'primitive'
But it was quite sophisticated for it's time !
Aluminium block with replacable iron liners (replace them along with the pistons - and you have a brand new engine)
Aluminium head
Aluminium intake manifold
Cartrige type full-flow oil filter
Exhaust gas recirculation system to improve ecological issues
But also it has primitive solid adjustable valve lifters and manual choke

Pere Marquette 1225 is a 2-8-4 steam locomotive built in 1941
for the Pere Marquette Railway by Lima Locomotive Works in Lima, Ohio.
This engine is one of a pair, I'm standing on the valve gantry of the opposing engine. Located at Kempton Park Pumping Station, Hanworth, Middlesex, UK. these engines are accessed at four levels. Beneath are the two pump floors out of shot. Operating on the triple expansion principal. Triple meaning the steam is used three times entering the high pressure cylinder first (RH), then into the intermediate cylinder (middle) and finally the low pressure cylinder (LH) before returning to the boiler via the condenser. I believe these are the largest working preserved triple expansion engines in the world. These give a feel for the size of the engines fitted in ill-fated RMS Titanic. Well worth a visit on steaming days. kemptonsteam.org/collection/triple-expansion-engines/
