Just like the real veins feeding in to the heart. A view from Dr. Jose P Rizal Bridge, Seattle, Washington, USA. I feel it is just made to be photographed.

I took this last Friday during one of this year's more color packed sunsets. The sky didn't look very promising at first but in the convergence zone anything could happen! I ran into some lovely ladies and we joined eachother for some good laughs and good shooting.

Also, I was gonna remove the crane but I liked how it looked to be holding a light for the Billy Joel concert at Century Link that night;-)

Jose Rizal Park, Seattle

Images like these are the reason I sincerely live and breathe for night photography and capturing the personality of our cities on camera. This cityscape portrays how beautiful Seattle is on summer evenings. The entire region, during sunset and the proceeding blue hour, often appears to be bathed in gold. It’s exciting, breathtaking, captivating, romantic, and blissful all at once.

The Space Needle is an observation tower in Seattle, Washington, a landmark of the Pacific Northwest, and an icon of Seattle. It was built in the Seattle Center for the 1962 World's Fair, which drew over 2.3 million visitors, when nearly 20,000 people a day used its elevators. Once the tallest structure west of the Mississippi River, it is 605 ft high, 138 ft wide, and weighs 9,550 tons. It is built to withstand winds of up to 200 miles per hour and earthquakes of up to 9.1 magnitude, as strong as the 1700 Cascadia earthquake. It also has 25 lightning rods. It has an observation deck at 520 ft and the rotating SkyCity restaurant at 500 ft. The downtown Seattle skyline, as well as the Olympic and Cascade Mountains, Mount Rainier, Mount Baker, Elliott Bay and surrounding islands can be viewed from the top of the Needle. Photographs of the Seattle skyline often show the Space Needle prominently, above skyscrapers and Mount Rainier. Visitors can reach the top of the Space Needle by elevators that travel at 10 miles per hour. The trip takes 41 seconds. On windy days, the elevators slow to 5 miles per hour. On April 19, 1999, the city's Landmarks Preservation Board designated it a historic landmark. [www.spaceneedle.com/home/]

Discovered a series of bizarrely proportioned trees while exploring Seattle's Volunteer Park. These were unusual, but the strangest are yet to come (which I'll post soon). One of them looks right out of Lord of the Rings. The logic behind their growth is truly befuddling. :)

This is what I call romantic. A stroll on a light raining night with a umbrella looking at the signs reflect off the pavement... then ask your spouse "Do you want to go for a bike ride? don't worry I'll dry the seat for you"

This photo was taken in July of 2023. We knew that the full moon was going to be red and low on the horizon so I wanted to see if I could line up the moon with the Space Needle. We found the spot and the time and when we showed up we were in for a shock. Clearly, we were not the only people who figured out this event! There had to be a hundred people there. Fortunately, I was able to position myself early enough that I was get the composition that I wanted. I either wanted the moon at the top of the spire, or I wanted it to sit in the "bowl" of the top platform. I was unable to get high enough for it to be at the top of the spire, so I went for the bowl look. I was super close to getting it perfect, but its just a little off. The moon is centered, but just a little too low so its just a little below the bowl. Also, the next time that this becomes possible, I will try to make sure the buildings are not behind the disc portion of the Space Needle, but that will depend on the moon. At the end of the day, I am still very happy with this image and it was a lot of fun to plan out and create. I hope you all can enjoy it as well!

A breathtaking view, Mt. Rainier in the background while Mt. St. Helens was off the right wing behind me.

The ever present construction signs in downtown Seattle, Washington.

Kubota Garden is a 20 acre Japanese garden in the Rainier Beach neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. A public park since 1987, it was started in 1927 by Fujitaro Kubota, a Japanese emigrant. Today, it is maintained as a public park by the Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation and the Kubota Garden Foundation.

Fujitaro Kubota emigrated from Shikoku, Japan in 1907 and established the Kubota Gardening Company in 1923. Projects of his included the garden at Seattle University and the Japanese garden at Bloedel Reserve in Bainbridge Island. In 1927, he bought 5 acres of swampland in Rainier Beach to start the garden and in 1930 increased the size of the garden to 30 acres. Kubota Garden served as cultural center for the Japanese community in Seattle, as well as a home, office and nursery for his business. During World War II, Kubota Garden was abandoned for four years as Kubota and his family were interned at Camp Minidoka in Idaho. During his internment, Kubota supervised the building of a community park, which included a Japanese rock garden. After the war, he and his sons Tak and Tom Kubota rebuilt the business.

The Japanese government awarded Kubota the Fifth Class Order of the Sacred Treasure in 1972 "for his achievements in his adopted country, for introducing and building respect for Japanese Gardening in this area." Kubota maintained the garden until his death in 1973.

In 1981, the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board declared the core 4.5 acres of the park to be a historical landmark of the City of Seattle. In 1987, the City of Seattle bought the garden from the Kubota family, and it is now maintained by the Department of Parks and Recreation as well as volunteers from the Kubota Garden Foundation.

In addition, 17 acres surrounding the park has been purchased by the Open Space Program in the City of Seattle in order to protect Mapes Creek, which runs through the park. The Tom Kubota Stroll Garden broke ground in 1999 and was opened in 2000. The garden received a new entrance gate designed by Gerard Tsutakawa in 2004.

The garden has encountered the problems associated with vandalism when the staff has left for the day—as evidenced by beer bottles strewn about on the property. Shell casings are a sign that firearms have been fired; and graffiti has appeared.

The Kubota Garden Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1989 to "support, enhance, and perpetuate the Kubota Garden within the spirit and vision of Fujitaro Kubota." Kubota's vision included opening the garden to the public and increasing American understanding and appreciation of Japanese Gardens. The foundation provides additional fundraising, volunteer work, and publications to support the garden.

This is my first attempt and this is a test HDR in every sense. In fact, this image is about as "sooc" as possible for me. What you are viewing here is 3 separate JPEGs merged together using Corel PaintShop Pro Photo X2. That is correct. I do not own that Photomatix program, and I did not even open up the NEF (RAW) files from my Nikon D90 and merge them that way. Nor do I even know how to. I just merged the 3 JPEGs and applied some color saturation and contrast, and that is about it.

This is my favorite vantage of the Emerald City looking across Elliot Bay from Alki Beach in West Seattle. And as I said in my tag, no this is not Alaska, which is a reference to several sportswriters and commentators who allude to sports teams not wanting to travel to Seattle and play games because it is too far. Enjoy!

This was our 1st snow storm this year happened a couple weeks back in January. Seattle doesn’t get snow that often. In fact we mostly get rain more than 250 days a year. Therefore when we do get some snow, some of us get excited to encounter this rare condition but at the same time other people were afraid of driving in the snow.

Last year when I was here captured the same snow scene. The condition was not this rare because it was during an early morning. The color wasn’t there, I didn’t get any clouds formation and most importantly I did not get any light streaks because no one was there on the road. Last year I was standing here alone but this year I was accompanied by 2 of mine friends, Dene and Aaron.

Each time when I shoot next to Dene the shot often turned out to be a surprise :-) When I got here Dene was already there an hour before braving out the cold and my usual spot was taken by another photographer. Dene was standing south of him so my only choice left was to stand south of her. After 10-15 minutes later the other photographer left the scene and Aaron came took his spot. The spot I was standing south of Dene was actually fine because now I can include the headlights S-curve in the shot. Yes, I do like this comp and thanks to Dene for leaving a spot next to her again :-)

It’s always fun shooting with the Seattle crew and Aaron usually encounter strange people that make us laugh so hard. Definitely was a cold day but nevertheless, great times.

Everyone have a great rest of the week and I’ll be swinging by your streams soon. As always, thanks a lot for the great comments and deeply appreciated.

Below are links to their stream and if you haven't already feel free to check out their work. Both are great friends and great NW photographers.
