Eastern Screech-Owl

Eastern Tailed Blue butterfly in my yard in Chester County, PA.

I have previously taken several photographs of these beautiful little butterflies, but I believe that is my first good image of one with its wings open.

Eastern Rosella (Platycercus eximius)

Another of our lunch companions today.

One of the really nice things about Eastern Wood Pewees is that they often have a perch that they like to use to hunt from, flying out to catch insects and then returning to the same perch. This means that they can be very easy to photograph, especially during migration when they are REALLY focused on eating. It also helps that they typically prefer fairly well exposed perches so they can spot their prey. This individual was no exception; over and over again it returned to the same perch allowing for tons of photos. Now if only the pewee was as colorful as a Painted Bunting…

Contopus virens

This butterfly was tiny (wingspan about 1 in.-2.5 cm.), very active, and I didn't have my preferred camera/lens, so I felt fortunate to get any image at all. I decided to post anyway even with the grass blade across his wing because this one is a first for me and he is so attractive. Can you see his tiny "tails?"

Seen at the Tall Grass Prairie Preserve, Pawhuska, Oklahoma.

The wing went up to catch his balance as the strong wind was moving the perch 12-18 inches side to side.

I followed this tiny butterfly to its place of rest in between the blades of grass on this clover leaf. With wings spread he's approximately the size of your thumbnail.

There is a pair of Eastern Phoebe nesting above the window of my house. This is one of their hop-stops before entering their nest. Used camera housing and remote trigger to capture this one.

Eastern Towhees are usually seen rummaging in the leaf litter or creeping through thick shrubs. Towhees tend to hop wherever they go, often moving deliberately and giving themselves plenty of time to spot food items. They scratch at leaves with a characteristic two-footed backward hop, then dart after anything they’ve uncovered. When a female first enters a male’s territory, he chases her as if she’s unwelcome. Over the next few days he becomes tolerant and then attentive, following the female everywhere she goes. Eastern Towhees have large white tail corners which they flick and flash in response to other towhees or when disturbed.

Wikipedia: The eastern bluebird (Sialia sialis) is a small North American migratory thrush found in open woodlands, farmlands, and orchards. It is found east of the Rockies, southern Canada to the Gulf states, and southeastern Arizona to Nicaragua. The increase in trees throughout the Great Plains during the past century due to fire suppression and tree planting facilitated the western range expansion of the species. as well as range expansions of many other species of birds.

Eastern Screech-Owl

Eastern rosella male in low sapling, Callum Brae, Australian Capital Territory, October 2009.

I had developed the habit of setting up my camouflage at daybreak and sitting quietly waiting for something to happen. It restricted the range I could cover with my camera, but the compensation was the occasional close-up after the birds had forgotten about me.

A young Eastern Kingbird has not quite gotten the idea it has to learn to get it's own food. Mom and Dad and siblings were gathering there own bugs, but this little one kept cheeping waiting for food. The parents checked it periodically but did not give it any food.

We have both eastern and western meadowlarks where I live (far West Texas) and hearing their song distinguishes one from the other. This one just sang a beautiful Eastern Meadowlark song.

These have started to hang out in our trees, but show no interest in the feeders. Interesting...
