Due to a canceled flight we got a bonus day in Qatar on our return from Thailand and Laos. It was a great visit, it couldn't have worked out any better.
Due to an engine failure ELS 1221 has found its way back out onto the road working the north end of the Green Bay to Channing line. You never know how long these beasts will stay on the road so take it while you can, and thats what we did. 1221 and 502 pulls into Channing yard, where they will wye their train and head back south for Pembine.
Shot on the way up to bag Dow Crag. There were not many shots from this trip due to the strength of the wind and persistent cloud and rain.

Due to the derailment of another NS train on the East End from Atlanta to Birmingham, several reroutes are taking the ATL north end to Chattanooga. Here train 245 cruises through Ooltewah just before sunrise.
Due to a number of reasons (soft temperatures, lots of rain,...), my local area is seeing a huge amount of snails this year.
While they can be an absolute nuisance (if you're into gardening for example), some of them can be quite photogenic as well.
Due the pollution in the atmosphere because of the scarce precipitations during the last weeks, the orange hue over the horizon was remarkable, with a nice gradation of colors in the sky.
Finally, and thank God, today it´s raining. With Madrid´s reservoirs at the 60% of their capability, today´s rain is much more than welcome.
In Madrid is especially needed to clean the atmosphere and the streets. Right now I feel more relaxation.
I wish you a good Tuesday and good health in the once again worrying situation we are experiencing due to the multitude of new infections with Omicron.
Therefore, take care and stay safe!

Due to washouts along the CN St-Maurice Subdivision west of La Tuque (Québec), VIA 602 (Jonquière QC - Montréal QC) ran alone this week-end.
Due to the lack of nature photos on my Malta trip he's another recent image from earlier in the year.
For those who havntr visited the RSPB run site at Leighton Moss I would thoroughly recommend, mend a visit. The hides offer different and excellent views of the reserve.

“La Carnia sarebbe più dolce se il primo paese non fosse amaro” dice un locale proverbio popolare. Amaro, il primo dei ventotto comuni che si incontrano entrando in Carnia dalla provincia di Udine, sorge sulla strada romana detta Iulia Augusta che congiungeva Aquileia con il Norico. Proprio per la sua posizione, si ritiene che qui, nell’antichità, ci fosse una stazione per il cambio dei carri e degli animali da traino.

“Carnia would be sweeter if the first town weren't bitter” (Amaro) says a local popular proverb. Amaro, the first of the twenty-eight municipalities that you encounter when entering Carnia from the province of Udine, is located on the Roman road called Iulia Augusta which connected Aquileia with the Noricum. Due to its location, it is believed that here, in ancient times, there was a station for changing wagons and towed animals.

Due to a group of VRS geeps being temporarily OOS for painting the Vermont Railway has been using ancient Green Mountain Railroad Alco RS1 405 for daily freight service on the Bellows Falls switcher assignment (train DASW). Normally this unit only sees service on the VRS' passenger excursion trains and perhaps use on revenue freights once or twice a year at most. So any time she's used for revenue service is special, and I'm hard pressed to think of anywhere else in the country an RS1 is used to haul freight anymore. For these reasons, any time she is out and I can swing it I make the nearly 3 hr trip north to see her.
What is even more special is that this unit is very much on home rails having been built for the Rutland in November 1951. So that means she is approaching her 71st birthday in a few months and has never left the Green Mountain state!
Here is the ancient veteran at MP B2.5 on modern day VRS' Falls Running Track of the Bellows Falls Subdivision which is the original Rutland Railway Green Mountain mainline. She is lugging more than 30 cars and the dead VTR 207 (headed to the North Walpole paint booth) down track 1 as she assists with yarding train 263 which just arrived from Rutland in this view looking west from the Riverside Road crossing.

Due to the drought the pine tree died last year. The branch just fell to ground, due to the rain and the wind today.

Another bit of flash photography due to our recent inclement weather, I caught this Great Tit in such a position that it looks as if its hiding behind its wing...now you see me, now you don't! ;)

Starting the year in random mode starting with my favorite wildlife subject. As you might guess, I'll be doing another moose safari this year. Not often do I get a photo op of a moose in water. This is the latest one, taken over two years ago.

Due to a blazing bright moon on Sunday evening I decided to try and image the iconic Horsehead Nebula in Orion using my narrowband Hydrogen Alpha (Ha) filter.
The first time I have imaged this nebula!
The Horsehead Nebula is a small dark nebula situated just south of Orion's belt and close to the bright star Alnitak, the eastern most star of said belt.
The nebula is approximately 1375 light years from earth and gets its name from its resemblance to a horse's head or a knight chess piece! Although the more I look at it it reminds me of a Seahorse!
The deep red colour originates from ionised Hydrogen gas (Ha) behind the nebula. The energy source being the nearby star Sigma Orionis.
Visible foreground streaks within the ionised gas are due to magnetic forces channelling the gas into streams.
The background strip of glowing hydrogen gas marks the edge of an enormous cloud.
Heavy localized interstellar clouds of dust result in alternate areas of almost complete opacity and transparency within the Horsehead.
The darkness of the Horsehead is caused by this dark, thick dust blocking the starlight behind it.
Imaged with an Esprit 120ED refractor and a ZWO 1600MM camera/Baader Ha filter combo.
