Coal stocks are ready for a harsh winter reliant on fossil fuel burning due to the soaring price of gas. 66789 is part way through delivering another couple of thousand tonnes as it creeps through the unloader.

For Macro Mondays theme 'Gift'. The gift here is not the snail, but my precious microscope. It was given to me by my grandparents when I was a young child - they had had a veterinary student lodger renting a small flat above their garage who suddenly vacated the flat when the rent was due, leaving behind a number of possessions that presumably were too difficult to carry easily. One of things left behind was this microscope, clearly a quality and valuable instrument so it is curious that it would be left behind. Recognising my interest in the natural sciences, my grandparents gave me his microscope, that came with slides and eyepieces - it was a excellent source of discovery that lasted all through my school days until I went off to university. I still have the microscope, but it doesn't get taken out of its case very often any more - although I did have fun photographing it for a photography course, see the first comment box. The 4X is the magnification power of one of the objective lenses, it is 1.8cm in diameter.

No snails were harmed in the making of this photograph.

Mike the shunter confirms that departure of the 6S45 07.15 alumina train to Fort William is imminent. Most unusually the train was a third of its usual length due to problems overnight with the loading equipment.

Due to weekend engineering works on the WCML, a number of Anglo-Scottish freights were being diverted via the ECML. However, the returning engineers were booked up the S&C in order to get to Carlisle, and were due through Kirkby Stephen at 07:00. In glorious early morning light, 68002 is about a mile into the descent from Ais Gill summit at Angerholme, working 6C02 Crewe - Carlisle.

To the back of the image is Britain's highest mountain Ben Nevis - you wouldn't know it though due to the cloud. We went to this location twice but the first time rain was thrashing down and Ben Nevis wasn't visible at all. The second time was far better.

I have seen images of this old boat of many occasions but hadn't seen any which included the waterway but I think it looks pretty good.

Shot on the way up to bag Dow Crag. There were not many shots from this trip due to the strength of the wind and persistent cloud and rain.

Sally Lightfoot crabs are rumoured to have been named after a Caribbean dancer, due to their agility in jumping from rock to rock, their ability to run in four directions and their capacity to climb up vertical slopes. This extreme agility makes them very difficult to catch.

They are brightly-coloured coastal scavengers, found in the Galapagos Islands and across the western coast of South and Central America. They have an extremely generalist diet, feeding on anything from sea lion placenta to other crabs. This makes them an important part of the ecosystem, as they provide services such as keeping the shore clean of any organic debris and eating ticks off marine iguanas. . Adult crabs show characteristic intense blue and red colouring on their shells, with a white or pale blue underbelly. Younger crabs have darker colouration with red spots, providing a higher degree of camouflage. Every time the crabs moult their shell, the spots become gradually larger, until they obtain the adult colouring.

Female Sally Lightfoot crabs carry their eggs around with them on their stomachs until they hatch into the water. The larvae then swim out to deeper waters, where they consume phytoplankton and undergo a rapid series of moults. Eventually they undergo metamorphosis to become juvenile crabs and swim to shore, where they start to scavenge, becoming bigger and more colourful with each moult. These juveniles tend to travel in large groups until they reach maturity, after which they become largely solitary when not mating. When they are not mating or feeding, the crabs spend their time hiding in cracks in rocks. If they are disturbed, they may spray water or shed one of their legs as a defence mechanism.

Their scientific name is Grapsus grapsus.

Due to the derailment of another NS train on the East End from Atlanta to Birmingham, several reroutes are taking the ATL north end to Chattanooga. Here train 245 cruises through Ooltewah just before sunrise.

Due to a number of reasons (soft temperatures, lots of rain,...), my local area is seeing a huge amount of snails this year.

While they can be an absolute nuisance (if you're into gardening for example), some of them can be quite photogenic as well.

Looking west from the Sandstone Bluffs overlook along NM 117 in the El Malpais.

That is Gallo Peak under the thunderhead at left. It's part of the Zuni Mountains that extend out of frame to the left.

In the large basin between Sandstone Bluffs and the Zuni Mountains, is the main body of the El Malpais lava flows.

That thunderhead kept building and a couple hours later became a humdinger of a storm through which we drove home. We almost had to pull over due to lack of visibility.

Due to a group of VRS geeps being temporarily OOS for painting the Vermont Railway has been using ancient Green Mountain Railroad Alco RS1 405 for daily freight service on the Bellows Falls switcher assignment (train DASW). Normally this unit only sees service on the VRS' passenger excursion trains and perhaps use on revenue freights once or twice a year at most. So any time she's used for revenue service is special, and I'm hard pressed to think of anywhere else in the country an RS1 is used to haul freight anymore. For these reasons, any time she is out and I can swing it I make the nearly 3 hr trip north to see her.

What is even more special is that this unit is very much on home rails having been built for the Rutland in November 1951. So that means she is approaching her 71st birthday in a few months and has never left the Green Mountain state!

Here is the ancient veteran at MP B2.5 on modern day VRS' Falls Running Track of the Bellows Falls Subdivision which is the original Rutland Railway Green Mountain mainline. She is lugging more than 30 cars and the dead VTR 207 (headed to the North Walpole paint booth) down track 1 as she assists with yarding train 263 which just arrived from Rutland in this view looking west from the Riverside Road crossing.

Another bit of flash photography due to our recent inclement weather, I caught this Great Tit in such a position that it looks as if its hiding behind its wing...now you see me, now you don't! ;)
