This summer’s self-driving trip to Lanzhou took us through the “thrilling” highways and across the Yellow River, leading straight into the heart of the city. Lanzhou is the first major city that the Yellow River flows through and the only city where the Yellow River runs right through the urban center. The river nourishes the city and brings it endless vitality. Almost all tourists visiting Lanzhou head for destinations along the banks of the Yellow River, and the liveliest spot is undoubtedly Zhongshan Bridge. Walking through the streets of Lanzhou, you can easily distinguish between two groups of people: the relaxed locals and the visibly excited tourists. The locals’ laid-back demeanor contrasts sharply with the urgency of the visitors, yet the two coexist and blend harmoniously here. In a single park, you might find people from different ethnic backgrounds dancing and exercising, alongside parents with furrowed brows trying to manage kids while checking off their travel itinerary. Meanwhile, the locals sit leisurely by the Yellow River, sipping on San Pao Tai tea, watching tourists challenge themselves with the traditional sheepskin rafts. Just like the seamless integration of various ethnic cultures here, Chinese culture has always been a process of fusion and assimilation. Lanzhou, for me, is not just about beef noodles, hand-grabbed lamb, barbecue, the Gansu Provincial Museum, Zhongshan Bridge, and sheepskin rafts. It is also about the pervasive human touch and the palpable sense of life that defines this city.
