Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Tommy posted a Dave McKay shot and it caused me to reflect back to one of the first trips I took with my friend Dave McKay.

I was still in college at Case Institute of Technology when Dave and I took a trip to the Muskingum Electric Railroad. The MERR was the first automated railroad in the United States and normally run without a crew. As luck would have it, they were doing trackwork and running the locomotive manually. Dave talked the crew into a cab ride and we rode the entire line from the loader to the dumper.

From Wikipedia: The Muskingum Electric Railroad was a private coal-carrying railroad owned by American Electric Power, and started operation in 1968. MERR shuttled coal in two trains from the mine to a powerplant at Relief, Ohio a distance of 20 miles. The trains were driverless and powered by automated General Electric E50C's.The coal was harvested by the largest dragline ever to be built, "Big Muskie".

Also from Wikipedia: Big Muskie is a giant electric-powered Bucyrus-Erie dragline owned by the Central Ohio Coal Company, a division of American Electric Power. Taking three years to build, she started her career in 1969 removing overburden from coal formations. The Big Muskie is a model 4250-W Bucyrus-Erie dragline (the only one ever built). With a 220 cubic yard bucket, she is the largest single-bucket digging machine ever created.

The Las Vegas Monorail is a 3.9-mile / 6.3 km driverless monorail mass transit system located adjacent to the Las Vegas Strip. It connects several large casinos. The Westgate station of the Monorail is located at the front of the property of the Westgate Hotel & Casino and near the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Seventeen new trains will be built: these will feature the potential for driverless operation, as well as wider gangways for wheelchairs. The new trains will be the same length and size as the current trains, but will be made up of 4 carriages rather than the present 3.

Come drive with me.

Yet again I was fortunate enough to find myself in someone else's new car.

Given the UK advertising campaign for this model, Difficult Is Worth Doing (Honda clicky), I figured I'd take the challenge.

I only used the camera. Nothing's been added or taken away...

Stage 1 of Sydney Metro is to operate with 6-car trains running on 4 minute headways.

8033 comes off the Rozelle Branch having earlier shunted grain hoppers at the Goodman Fielder works in Summer Hill (formerly Mungo Scott Ltd), 18th September 2000. This section of track was lifted during the course of converting the Rozelle Branch to Light Rail. The Goods lines adjacent to the Bankstown Line have also now been de-electrified. As at late 2024, the Bankstown Line has been closed for conversion to driverless Metro trains.

Ok, so I don't mind admitting that I'm puzzled by this shot which I came across yesterday whilst doing some more scanning of the late Clem Smith's collection.

It shows a Standerwick ECW coach bodied Bristol VRL, stopped driverless, but with passengers, in the Staffordshire town of Stone. I know buses don't run on rails and can therefore go anywhere they might be taken, but it just seemed an odd place for it to be. Do any of you have access to any Standerwick timetables from the early '70s please? I know they called in at PMT's 'Four in Hand' restaurant, Newcastle under Lyme, for refreshments, and there are several photos of them on Stafford bus station having been towed off the M6, but Stone, mid way between the two? Maybe it was a pick up / set down point on a service to Birmingham, but I would have thought any patronage would have been severely compromised by the competing electrified rail service.

In 1819, Sir Thomas Raffles negotiated a treaty whereby Johor allowed the British to locate a trading port on the island. The Sultan of Johor is the sovereign ruler of the Malaysian state of Johor. It all was leading to the establishment of the British colony of Singapore in 1819. The port was strategically located along the main trade route between India and China. Singapore became an independent republic in 1965. Nowadays the country has become one of the world's most prosperous nations, with a highly developed free market economy and strong international trading links. Tourism in Singapore is a major industry and is the 5th most visited city in the world. Along with this, it also has one of the world's lowest crime rates. Public transport is easy when visiting Singapore. This includes the well-known Mass Rapid Transit system. MRT trains are fully automated without driver! Singapore is a green and clean city. It is also full of natural attractions and cultural heritage sites, from botanic gardens and nature parks to temples and museums. Chinatown is a small piece of China in the heart of Singapore. Once an enclave for Singapore’s Chinese immigrant population, the Chinatown of today is much-beloved for its blend of old and new, with historic temples and traditional medicinal halls sitting alongside hip new bars and lifestyle shops. You also can't miss the three monstrous towers of Marina Bay Sands which stand at the Marina Bay waterfront. Apart from the casino, the Marina Bay Sands also has a shopping mall, resorts, museums, theatres, an ice skating rink, and a Skydeck with an infinity pool.

Getting around Singapore by MRT (train) is simple. Singapore's public transport system is fast and efficient, and brings you to memorable attractions in no time. The Esplanade Bridge is a 261-metre-long road bridge that spans across the mouth of the Singapore River. The bridge offers panoramic views of Marina South and the financial centre of Singapore. It;s an excellent place to take a sunset walk in Singapore. The magnificent Fullerton Hotel is next to the bridge. Good place to spend evening, lighting in the front is exceptionally beautiful.

I wonder if driverless electric powered cars will be cheaper!

This is how I imagine particles see the world inside the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Sadly, the LHC was unavailable, so I had to make do with a Docklands Light Railway (DLR) driverless tube train in London to get this shot. If only London Underground could be as fast and efficient.

On our way to Tate Modern last Monday, Peter ushered Elsie and me to the front of the train . . . and as it is driverless, it was as if we were driving it. Fascinating! On the way back, Peter ushered us to the front of the train which, when the train pulled out of the station, was the back of the train and we watched, equally fascinated, as our journey disappeared behind us!

I am distracted - busy - and just dipping into flickr for a few days. Tomorrow family coming over and Elsie then staying over . . .

There are 44 stations in the Copenhagen Metro, a driverless rapid transit system serving Copenhagen, Frederiksberg and Tårnby in the capital region of Denmark. Of the original 22 metro stations, nine are underground, twelve are elevated, and one is at street level.[Christianshavn Station offers transfer between the system's two original lines (M1 and M2), which share track between Vanløse and Christianshavn stations. From Christianshavn, M1 branches south traveling to Vestamager Station, while M2 heads southeast to Lufthavnen Station, which serves Copenhagen Airport.

The Copenhagen Metro opened in 2002, with additional stations opening in 2003, and the M2 branch to the airport completed in 2007. M1 and M2 are in total 21 kilometers (13 mi) long, of which 10 kilometers (6.2 mi) is in tunnels and 11 kilometers (6.8 mi) is elevated. It takes 23 minutes to travel on each line from one end to the other. The City Circle Line is intended to form a 15.5-kilometer (9.6 mi) loop around the city center, with a full circumference taking 25 minutes.

From Mount Faber the Singapore cable car provides an aerial link to the popular island resort of Sentosa. Each cabin is suspended approx. sixty meters above the sea. The entire ride takes only twelve minutes. The cable car provides great views of the Sentosa island, Siloso beach and mainland Singapore. If there is a cruise ship standing on the day, you do get a great of that as well. The water around Sentosa is clean enough for swimming, but don’t expect it to be crystal clear. As Singapore is one of the world’s busiest ports, there are dozens of cargo ships and tankers on the horizon.

From mount Faber you can take the Cable car to the Sentosa Island. The lines of the cable car network, Mount Faber and Sentosa, pass through all the stunning and iconic sights of Singapore. You can get a bird’s eye view of the picturesque beaches and harbor as well as Singapore attractions and theme parks. Siloso Beach is surrounded by many of Sentosa’s top attractions, iFly Skydiving, Wings of Time audio-visual show, Madame Tussauds wax museum, and Sentosa 4D Adventureland are just some of the things you can do close by. After dark, Siloso beach really comes alive, with parties, music, lively bars and restaurants. Siloso beach is a man-made beach. The sand on Siloso Beach was imported from Australia and is kept exceedingly clean. Photo of Samantha at the Siloso beach, Sentosa, Singapore.

Did the film name inspire the underground or the other way round! Regardless, it had been 38 years since I'd last set foot on the planet's third oldest underground metro system so I thought I'd take a few shots of this characterful little railway.

Set 114 slows for the stop at the light green liveried Cowcaddens station with an Inner working on 28th April 2021. The orange and green go quite well together but the station colour reminds me of an awful coloured bathroom suite I had in the eighties....

None of the complexities of the London set up here - just an Outer and Inner line running in a circle...which given my track record for getting lost on LU, suits me.

"Nuremberg (/ˈnjʊərəmbɜːrɡ/ NURE-əm-burg; German: Nürnberg [ˈnʏʁnbɛʁk]; in the local East Franconian dialect: Nämberch [ˈnɛmbɛrç]) is the largest city in Franconia, the second-largest city in the German state of Bavaria, and its 545,000 inhabitants make it the 14th-largest city in Germany.

Nuremberg sits on the Pegnitz, which carries the name Regnitz from its confluence with the Rednitz in Fürth onwards (Pegnitz→ Regnitz→ Main→ Rhine→ North Sea), and on the Rhine–Main–Danube Canal, that connects the North Sea to the Black Sea. Lying in the Bavarian administrative region of Middle Franconia, it is the largest city and unofficial capital of the entire cultural region of Franconia. The city is surrounded on three sides by the Reichswald, a large forest, and in the north lies Knoblauchsland (garlic land), an extensive vegetable growing area and cultural landscape.

The city forms a continuous conurbation with the neighbouring cities of Fürth, Erlangen and Schwabach, which is the heart of an urban area region with around 1.4 million inhabitants, while the larger Nuremberg Metropolitan Region has a population of approximately 3.6 million. It is the largest city in the East Franconian dialect area (colloquially: "Franconian"; German: Fränkisch).

Nuremberg and Fürth were once connected by the Bavarian Ludwig Railway, the first steam-hauled and overall second railway opened in Germany (1835). Today, the U1 of the Nuremberg Subway, which is the first German subway with driverless, automatically moving railcars, runs along this route. Nuremberg Airport (Flughafen Nürnberg "Albrecht Dürer") is the second-busiest airport in Bavaria after Munich Airport, and the tenth-busiest airport of the country.

Institutions of higher education in Nuremberg include the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg), Germany's 11th-largest university, with campuses in Erlangen and Nuremberg and a university hospital in Erlangen (Universitätsklinikum Erlangen), Technische Hochschule Nürnberg Georg Simon Ohm and Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg. The Nuremberg exhibition centre (Messe Nürnberg) is one of the biggest convention center companies in Germany and operates worldwide.

Nuremberg Castle and the city's walls, with their many towers, are among the most impressive in Europe. Staatstheater Nürnberg is one of the five Bavarian state theatres, showing operas, operettas, musicals, and ballets (main venue: Nuremberg Opera House), plays (main venue: Schauspielhaus Nürnberg), as well as concerts (main venue: Meistersingerhalle). Its orchestra, the Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg, is Bavaria's second-largest opera orchestra after the Bavarian State Opera's Bavarian State Orchestra in Munich. Nuremberg is the birthplace of Albrecht Dürer and Johann Pachelbel. 1. FC Nürnberg is the most famous football club of the city and one of the most successful football clubs in Germany. Nuremberg was one of the host cities of the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Franconia (German: Franken, pronounced [ˈfʁaŋkŋ̍]; Franconian: Franggn [ˈfrɑŋɡŋ̍]; Bavarian: Frankn) is a region of Germany, characterised by its culture and Franconian dialect (German: Fränkisch).

Franconia is made up of the three Regierungsbezirke of Lower, Middle and Upper Franconia in Bavaria, the adjacent, Franconian-speaking, South Thuringia, south of the Thuringian Forest—which constitutes the language boundary between Franconian and Thuringian— and the eastern parts of Heilbronn-Franconia in Baden-Württemberg.

Those parts of the Vogtland lying in Saxony (largest city: Plauen) are sometimes regarded as Franconian as well, because the Vogtlandian dialects are mostly East Franconian. The inhabitants of Saxon Vogtland, however, mostly do not consider themselves as Franconian. On the other hand, the inhabitants of the Hessian-speaking parts of Lower Franconia west of the Spessart (largest city: Aschaffenburg) do consider themselves as Franconian, although not speaking the dialect. Heilbronn-Franconia's largest city of Heilbronn and its surrounding areas are South Franconian-speaking, and therefore only sometimes regarded as Franconian. In Hesse, the east of the Fulda District is Franconian-speaking, and parts of the Oden Forest District are sometimes regarded as Franconian for historical reasons, but a Franconian identity did not develop there.

Franconia's largest city and unofficial capital is Nuremberg, which is contiguous with Erlangen and Fürth, with which it forms the Franconian conurbation with around 1.3 million inhabitants. Other important Franconian cities are Würzburg, Bamberg, Bayreuth, Ansbach and Coburg in Bavaria, Suhl and Meiningen in Thuringia, and Schwäbisch Hall in Baden-Württemberg.

The German word Franken—Franconians—also refers to the ethnic group, which is mainly to be found in this region. They are to be distinguished from the Germanic people of the Franks, and historically formed their easternmost settlement area. The origins of Franconia lie in the settlement of the Franks from the 6th century in the area probably populated until then mainly by the Elbe Germanic people in the Main river area, known from the 9th century as East Francia (Francia Orientalis). In the Middle Ages the region formed much of the eastern part of the Duchy of Franconia and, from 1500, the Franconian Circle. The restructuring of the south German states by Napoleon, after the demise of the Holy Roman Empire, saw most of Franconia awarded to Bavaria." - info from Wikipedia.

The Taipei Metro Wenshan Line (previously known as the Muzha Line before October 8, 2009) is an elevated, medium-capacity line in Taipei, Taiwan. It was the first line on the Taipei Metro, consisting of 12 stations over 10.9 km.[4] Opened on March 28, 1996, after construction delays compounded with legal tussles, the fully elevated people mover system is driverless and fully automated.[5] A full-length journey on the line takes 22 minutes, and it is labelled as part of the Brown Line on the Taipei Metro. Currently, services are operated using 4-car Bombardier Innovia APM 256 rolling stock[3] as well as the retrofitted VAL 256 trains and directly connect to the Neihu Line.

Next to the hotel are the Gardens by the Bay. The beautiful Gardens by the Bay light up in the evening with a free light and sound show. But the park consists of much more. There are three gardens: Bay South Garden, Bay East Garden and Bay Central Garden. In addition, there are two conservatories with botanical gardens, and the SuperTree Grove, with its well-known OCBC Skywalk. Definitely worth a visit.

Naast het hotel liggen de Gardens by the Bay.

Saturday night cruising in Paprihaven, at the Market Street Chevron...

"Ooookay... these buses are different."

"Oh, they are. Smaller."

"You didn't notice? There are no drivers!"

"GAH! You're right! And they're completely silent!! Are they haunted!?"

"No, you goof. They're electric self-driverless, or something like that. It's all AI now."

"Do we get in?"

"How would it know to let us off? What if the AI turns bad like in The Schwarzenegger?"

"You mean The Terminator?"

"Yeah, what if the bus does that?"

"Oh, what if someone hacks into the bus and sends us out to Thistledeep??"

"Good point! What if... Oh, the bus is leaving."

"Oh, here's another one!"

"Just like the previous one..."

"SCARY!!"

After a very enjoyable day with friends walking from Blackheath to Wapping and dinner at Il Bordello, by now 22.30 we took the Becton line of the Docklands Light Railway from Limehouse station to Prince Regent & our hotel.

Bombardier B92 three car emu with 89 at the front is seen entering Limehouse station. These trains are driverless, witness the lack of driver!

A Skytrain Mark II train set makes its way into the Stadium-Chinatown station in downtown Vancouver.

A view from the Dunsmuir viaduct.

Stadium–Chinatown Station (formerly Stadium Station) is part of the SkyTrain system in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It serves both the Expo Line and the Millennium Line at the eastern entrance of the Dunsmuir Tunnel, located beneath Downtown Vancouver. It is one of four stations on the Expo and Millennium Lines serving downtown.

Built in 1985, it was named due to its proximity to the then-new BC Place Stadium (built in 1983). Both the station and the stadium were vital pieces of Vancouver's Expo 86. The "Chinatown" portion of the station's name was added in 2004, after Vancouver City Council felt it would increase tourism to the area and increase awareness to visitors about Vancouver's Chinatown district one block away.

During Expo 86, the station served as a transfer point between the main site of the World's Fair and the Canadian Pavilion (now Canada Place), located on Burrard Inlet at Waterfront Station. Transferring between these two stations was free to fair attendees during the World's Fair using special shuttle trains which ran from a third platform at Stadium Station (where there was a connection to the monorail serving the main Expo 86 site) to the Canadian Pavilion at Waterfront Station. An automated announcement was aired during people's shuttle ride explaining how SkyTrain and automated driverless technology operated. The third platform and track was removed from revenue use after Expo 86. In cases of extreme crowds from hockey games and concerts, the third-platform may be used.

Polaroid Week Day 5 | Frame 1

My neighbor across buildings seems to have gone for the day, an expansive apartment that takes up the whole floor, but what's caught my eye is the driverless cars navigating 3rd street.

They are easily picked out not only with the barrage of cameras and detritus hanging off them, but because of how evident it is they are in a game they can't even play.

In the time I've watched, the humans around these cars are like sharks in the water smelling blood. They know the driverless car will always yield, always leave the proper gap. These humans, as they do, take advantage for their own spoils. They cut off the driverless car and force it back, but it still plays by the rules and finally makes it through past Market in fits and spurts to go up the big hill, obeying the rules.

At 36 metres above ground, the Henderson Waves bridge is the highest pedestrian bridge in Singapore. The best way to explore the bridge is as part of the Southern Ridges Walk, a five-kilometer hiking trail that takes you through three major parks. The Henderson Waves connects two parks with each other. Aside from being able to observe a rich variety of tropical flora and fauna, a walk on the Ridges and Mount Faber also affords you some stunning views of the island.

The best way to explore the bridge is as part of the Southern Ridges Walk, a five-kilometer hiking trail that takes you through three major parks: Kent Ridge Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park and Mount Faber Park. Mount Faber is covered by a secondary rain forest. The vegetation on the slope helps to stabilise the terrain besides beautifying the park. From Mount Faber you have a beautiful view on the harbor and Bukit Merah. Singapore is ranked as the top maritime capital of the world. There are some very nice developments at the foothill of Mount Faber. Mostly are owned by private developers and cost slightly more because of the prime location and city view. Majority of the flats have three or four rooms. Also, 25% are flats for rental.

Ook is 25% een appartement voor verhuur.
