I was back in Copenhagen recently and had to have another go at one of these shots in the driverless underground trains there.

Song Title Theme for Crazy Tuesday. I feel there should be a driver visible. (Driverless maybe.)

In this age of driverless cars, drones & other shiny, high-tech gizmos ....there is something reassuring about a dusty old freight train ....coming around the bend on a bright summer morning......& sounding its whistle as it passes ...

With the push for driver only trains, and perhaps driverless trains, why wait, just run passengerless trains,

The Mass Rapid Transit, abbreviated and referred to in local parlance as the MRT, is a heavy rail rapid transit system that constitutes the bulk of the railway network in Singapore, spanning—with the exception of the forested core and the island's rural northwest—the length and width of the city-state's main island. The first section of the MRT opened on 7 November 1987, and the network has since grown rapidly in accordance with Singapore's aim of developing a comprehensive rail network as the backbone of the country's public transportation system, with an average daily ridership of 3.384 million in 2019, approximately 83% of the bus network's 4.099 million in the same period. The MRT is the oldest, busiest, and most comprehensive rapid transit system (both by length and number of stations) in Southeast Asia. The MRT is also unique in that the vast majority of underground stations in the network double as purpose-built Singapore Civil Defence Force bunkers and air raid shelters, being built with hardened boundary walls, reinforced concrete floor and roof slabs, and concrete or steel doors for the purpose of withstanding conventional aerial bomb and chemical attacks. The system has the added distinctions of having the longest fully automated and driverless network in the world, as well as some of the longest and deepest subway tunnel sections in the world. 31753

Opening of our new driverless metro!

In the first six hours after gates opened, 90,000 people rode on the new 36-kilometre Metro Northwest line from Chatswood to Rouse Hill.

Most of the mass transit system in KL is driverless so as a passenger you can have the experience of watching out of the window at the front of the train

So it's the 'Alexander' catamaran on its way to McMahons Point Wharf, Balmain East Wharf and then across Darling Harbour to Barangaroo.

If you catch this ferry, you will be just in time for an amazing dinner at 'The Malaya' restaurant in Lime Street, right near King Street Wharf, at Barangaroo.

This is one of the coolest restaurants in Sydney. Here's the info AND the latest menu:

After dinner catch a night ferry back across the harbour, under the bridge, and on to Circular Quay. OR, get off at Luna Park (aka Milsons Point) and take the super fast, brand new, Metro driverless train back to the Hills District. Too easy, lol.

Sydney's new Metro line with driverless trains opened earlier this year, and I had to take a ride and get some photos. In this shot a train rolls in to Tallawong station. I was impressed, but there are precious few seats and plenty of standing room.

I have entitled this 'Dusk Rhapsody' because today I have spent countless hours trying to explain T.S. Eliot's bleak Modernist poem 'Rhapsody On A Windy Night' to a class of 17 year old girls. Shocking. And so the word "rhapsody" is imprinted on my mind.

But on a positive note, the new M1 Metro driverless train line opens in Sydney town tomorrow - Monday 19th August, 2024. It is mostly all underground. But there is wifi available I just learnt on the news!!! SO - it means: Castle Hill to Barangaroo in 13 minutes. Woo Hoo. And guess what? At Barangaroo is the Butcher's Block Cafe!!!

I was asked about headless riders on horses appearing in this misty avenue. Sorry I don't have many pictures of headless people let alone on horses so I've gone for a car from Highlands motor museum in Cromwell where I saw more Aston Martins than anywhere I've been. Including the most expensive one in the world being driven near its limits round the track.

Thanks for driving by. :)

Photographer admits prize-winning image was AI-generated

German artist Boris Eldagsen says entry to Sony world photography awards was designed to provoke debate

A photographer is refusing a prestigious award after admitting to being a “cheeky monkey” and generating the prize-winning image using artificial intelligence.

The German artist Boris Eldagsen revealed on his website that he was not accepting the prize for the creative open category, which he won at last week’s Sony world photography awards.

The winning photograph depicted two women from different generations in black and white.

In a statement on his website, Eldagsen, who studied photography and visual arts at the Art Academy of Mainz, conceptual art and intermedia at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, and fine art at the Sarojini Naidu School of Arts and Communication in Hyderabad, said he “applied as a cheeky monkey” to find out if competitions would be prepared for AI images to enter. “They are not,” he added.

“We, the photo world, need an open discussion,” said Eldagsen. “A discussion about what we want to consider photography and what not. Is the umbrella of photography large enough to invite AI images to enter – or would this be a mistake?

“With my refusal of the award I hope to speed up this debate.”

He said this was a “historic moment” as it was the first time an AI image had won a prestigious international photography competition, adding: “How many of you knew or suspected that it was AI generated? Something about this doesn’t feel right, does it?

“AI images and photography should not compete with each other in an award like this. They are different entities. AI is not photography. Therefore I will not accept the award.”

Eldagsen suggested donating the prize to a photo festival hosted in Odesa, Ukraine.

The stunt comes at a time of intense debate over the use and implications of AI with some issuing apocalyptic warnings that the technology is on the brink of irreversibly damaging the human experience.

Recent advancements in the use of AI in chatbots, driverless cars, song-writing software and the development of pharmaceuticals has spurred the discussion. Google’s chief executive, Sundar Pichai, said concerns about AI had kept him awake at night and warned the technology can be “very harmful” if incorrectly deployed.

The Guardian has approached Creo, the art events organisers behind the competition, for comment.

The city of Cambridge is full of brains and bicycles. The brains mainly reside in the hallowed halls of the university. They ride the bicycles, as do lesser mortals.

These pinnacles of intellect often seem to engage in incomprehensible and seemingly arcane studies. I remember going to a lecture once where an animated young lady effused enthusiasm for her doctoral research on the meaning and metaphors to be found in the patterns of Polynesian mat-weaving in the age before civilisation arrived (in the form of a boat from Europe).

I found the talk strangely fascinating and interesting. It takes one to know one I guess.

The latest development by the city’ brains is driverless bicycles. This advanced technology has considerable benefits to society, and Cambridge is now the world leader in the field (or streets for that matter). Bikes can travel a lot closer together, significantly reducing the congestion in the bike lanes for this already climate-friendly mode of transport. You can clearly see this in my image, taken in Cambridge just this week and processed today.

But there’s been a problem. There have been a large number of fatalities resulting from collisions between the novel bikes and food delivery riders driving their electric scooters. No one is quite sure what is the cause...

Quite understandably there has been considerable consternation in the upper levels of the city authorities. They are concerned that if we run out of drivers (more likely now since the ignominy of Brexit) food will be unable to be delivered from the restaurants to people’s homes and the population will starve. Never a good thing for leaders of a democracy (or even a monarchy - remember the French Revolution, anyone?). :)

For the Smile on Saturday group today, and also continuing my 100x project on motion.

Thank you for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the image. Happy Smile on Saturday and 100x

Sydney's fully automated and driverless Metro trains are a must-have experience for train aficionados such as myself. I stood at the front window of the train and shot a video of my ride. In this still shot cut from that video, we pass a Metro train going in the opposite direction.

These driverless trains (there is a computer operator) have no wheels and do not run on rails, instead they levitate above the surface of the special track using electromagnets and are capable of great speed. This is the only maglev in daily commerical service in the world, and connects Shanghai with the airport at Pudong. It didn't take long to get there - 8 mins at 420 km/h or so to cover the 30 kilometers. There are no plans to extend the service, which is quite an expensive enterprise. I took a video of the trip but this one is better (starts at 1.min31 sec): www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-S7wqwgF1Q&t=92s
