Nürnberg U-Bahn operator, VAG quietly slipped its first driverless trains into passenger service on Line U3 on the 4th May 2008 Authority to run Germany's first automated U-Bahn services with fare-paying passengers having been granted on April 30th 2008.Linking Maxfeld and Gustav-Adolf-Straße, the 6·1 km Line U3 shares tracks with U2 over the central section between Rathenauplatz and Rothenburger Straße. It is here that VAG pioneered the simultaneous operation of driverless U3 trains with manually-driven U2 services on the same track.

The €325m automation project known as Rubin (Realisierung einer automatisierten U-Bahn in Nürnberg) began in 2001. Operator VAG was contracted by the city authorities to implement the scheme, and Siemens was appointed as general contractor. The company delivered 32 Type DT3 trainsets for use on U3.In the initial phase of driverless services on U3 VAG ensured that at least one member of staff is on board each train to deal with queries from passengers and to intervene should problems occur. The first revenue services without drivers began running on Nürnberg U-bahn Line U2 on the 28th September 2009. The first section of U2 opened in January 1984. Subsequent extensions took the line to the airport in November 1999, and it now stretches for 13·5 km and 16 stations.

The common section that manually-driven trains on U2 services and automatic control on U3.was phased out in favour of full automation.

On the 18th November 2013 Nürnberg metro operator VAG has awarded Siemens a €164m contract to supply 21 four-car trainsets for Line U1.(see above)Expected to enter service from mid-2018, the Type G1 trains are intended to replace the 42 Type DT1 two-car sets in service on U1 since the 1970s. Designed in collaboration with ergon3Design, they will feature walk-through interiors, multifunctional areas, retractable wheelchair ramps and air-conditioning.

In 2012 VAG decided that converting Line U1 to driverless operation would not justify the cost. The procurement for trains with drivers started in June 2014. However, the G1 trains will have provision for future driverless operation, as they may be required to operate on driverless lines U2 and U3.

The contract with Siemens includes two options, the first of which would not be exercised before 2018. This covers six further trainsets, enabling the replacement of the 12 Type DT2 sets. The second option is for seven extra trainsets to increase capacity on the metro.

The base order is partly financed by the city, which is providing €21·6m from its federal allocation. The Land of Bayern is expected to provide 25% of the cost of 11 trains.

Lille has its metro system since 1983. The trains are driverless and, in the best French tradition, run on rubber tyres. This is the station underneath the Lille-Europe station. Like all stations the platforms are closed with doors that open after a train arrives at the station.

This might seem like any photo of a car cruising down a city street. However, this car is actually parked in the middle of the street next to available legal parking at the curb. This type of inconsiderate behavior is becoming more and more common. Maybe people just feel the world revolves around them and that they have no social responsibility to be courteous, or maybe they are just devoid of humanity. If you cannot tell if this car has now driver or passengers, check out the next slide in this photostream where the shot is from the side that looks through the windows. The AnsaldoBreda -Ansaldo STS Driverless Metro is a class of driverless electric multiple units and corresponding signaling system. Manufactured by AnsaldoBreda and Ansaldo STS in Italy, it is or will be used on the Copenhagen Metro, Princess Nora bint Abdul Rahman University, the Brescia Metro, the Thessaloniki Metro, Line 5 of the Milan Metro, Line C of the Rome Metro and the Yellow Line of the Taipei Rapid Transit System. The first system to use this class of driverless electric multiple units was the Copenhagen Metro which opened in 2002.

The rolling stock consists of two to six articulated cars. All trains are 2.65 meters (8.7 ft) wide, except those used on the Rome Metro which are 2.85 meters (9.4 ft) wide. All operate on standard gauge. Each car has a power output of 210 or 256 kilowatts (282 or 343 hp), fed from a third rail at 750 volts (except in Rome where it is 1,500 V overhead line). The systems are fully automated, consisting of automatic train protection (ATP), automatic train operation (ATO) and automatic train supervision.

General Motors wants to fill San Francisco with autonomous motor vehicles by 2019. (Which should be totally fine as long as they are not less-lethal two wheeled electric scooters.)
