Borders Buses 10601 YN07 VMP in Golden Square on Driver Training

Definitely a snatched shot, but a worthy one. Midland Red SOS FEDD 1841 captured to film on driver tuition duties in November 1956. Three inspectors are sat in the bus, likely a nervous driver at the wheel?

The MCCW bodied front-entrance bus had been new to the Midland Red in 1936. Originally powered with petrol engines, the FEDDS were converted to diesel engines between 1942 and 1947, using either the AEC 7.7-litre engine or BMMO K-type 8-litre engine. 8141 ended up with a K-type engine in circa 1945.

The bus was withdrawn from use in 1956, but reinstated in the same year as a driver training bus running out of Bearwood Garage. It was finally withdrawn in 1958 and disposed of. Today, not a single example of FEDD survives, although an engineless ex Trent example was saved for a short time in the 1970s, but later scrapped.

Three of the six 2009 Landrover Defender 110 SW vehicles operated by the National Risk and Resilience Department, Special Operations Response Teams. All members of SORT were required to pass a course of off road driving in the 110's and Polaris 6x6. Defenders were basic Station Wagon specification but with heated seats and ABS. 2.4 diesel, 6 speed through a 2 speed transfer box with high / low and centre diff lock. GOH and GOP are pulling the Bateson twin axle trailers containing 2 6x6 Polaris Rangers.

Seen in Saltdean was Brighton & Hove (part of the Go-Ahead Group), Driver Trainer 7007 DK09 ELW. This Wright Eclipse Urban 2 bodied Volvo B7RLE was new to Warrington Borough Transport in July 2009 as No.84 and is one of a trio that were acquired for the driver training fleet in Summer 2025.

Leyland Lynx 1107 was looking work weary when snapped on driver training duties at the rear of Park Lane Bus Garage in Wolverhampton during January 1999. The backend body sag suffered by the type is beginning to tell.

The former Crosville ENL930 ended its life with North Western as a training bus, and is seen here in that role at the Warrington depot on Athlone Road.

It is now preserved in Crosvilles experimental Brunswick Green and Marigold Orange livery.
