I spent and hour or so in the city on 31 October moving along George Street between Wynyard and Circular Quay. Tram testing and trailing, driver training and certification continues in earnest. Here's a record of the visit.
After amassing a substantial number of AECs with Alexander's 'Y Type' bodywork, the last of which was withdrawn in the 1980s after the MAP project, the company went on to purchase two or three more in the late 1990s for use as Driver Trainers. These later ones were four speed manual gearbox fitted Leyland Leopard chassis which had started life with Central SMT (Scotland). Their acquisition enabled drivers to be trained to gain a 'full' PSV licence as the testing requirements had changed. Formerly, to gain this entitlement, such a licence was only issued to those being tested on a manual boxed Double Decker... of which there was something of a shortage by this time.

10 minutes in Chalmers Street ...
I only had time for a few shots at Central (Chalmers Street) stop this morning, but it was long enough to witness some action. LRVs 015 & 016 were still running tests between Central and the Quay whilst LRVs 001 & 002 and 011 and 012 were engaged in training runs with newbie drivers. All in a morning's work
Sydney Light Rail - Driver training comes to Surry Hills.
I caught LRVs 001/002 and 019/020 in Devonshire Street, Surry Hills during driver training this afternoon. Cool and crisp in the August chill, but those trams look great.

Stagecoach Oxfordshire, MAN 18.220 Alexander ALX300, on driver training out in Wallingford, rather odd seeing stagecoach out this end of Oxfordshire, especially in the land of Thames Travel.
Grange over Sands on the southern coast of the English Lake District was, and maybe still is, a pleasant little haven of peace and quiet. It's one of those places where traffic doesn't go, unless it needs to be there. The trunk roads and Lake district holiday traffic all by-pass it. For several years I visited the town for a long weekend with a coach party on a Church retreat. Hanging around the main street wasn't usually that rewarding, but on this occasion, a Stagecoach Leyland Leopard Driver Trainer with Alexander 'Y Type' bodywork made it's approach audibly in the distance allowing enough time to get the camera out.

This former Leeds Atlantean, now a driver training unit with West Yorkshire PTE has managed to sneak over the border on possibly a route learning trip to Oldham in the red rose county of Lancashire. On reaching the border (where the anaemic rose changes to a healthy red!), the bus would be searched by the guards and any occupants would have their passports stamped. Guards could be bribed with such delicacies as Tripe, Savoury Ducks and Black Pudding and the latest edition of Whippet Weekly to keep boredom at bay whilst guarding on the bleak moors. The bus would then be given a strict time scale on how long it could stay in Lancashire for, break the rules and the Lancastrian guard would home in on the offending Tykes and surround them, usually armed to the teeth with pea shooters and plenty of ammo in the form of pigeon peas. If that didn't work it was left to the dreaded Mushy Pea bomb, which was guaranteed to make anyone surrender as the fall out was terrible!
